Notes
General:
It would appear from the recorded birth dates on NLGS website transcribed from the C of E Ferryland District records that Mary Louisa and Ida Frederika were a twim of each other. But the fact that sibling Caroline Maud seems from these records to have been born less than nine months before Ida and Mary makes on wonder if the transcribed records may be in error.

I'm really not sure where the baptism took place. I don't know whether there was a church in Aquaforte that long ago. According to the book "This is our Place This is our Home" by Joan Edward (Breakwater Books), the bible was donated to the St. Philip's on May 24, 1859 and it is thought by locals that the church was first dedicated about two years before that. I'm fairly confident that St. Luke's existed in Ferryland from about the early 1830s onward and it may be that all Aquaforte families travelled there for baptisms, marriages and funerals. Bishop John Inglis, who was responsible for Newfoundland but resided in Nova Scotia, came to Newfoundland in 1832 and consecrate a number of churches in the outports, possibly including St. Luke's However, I do not know the exact date that St. Luke's was built.
Of note in regard to early Christenings that are supposed to have happened at Ferryland is the name of the minister is P. Perring. He was assigned to work out of St. John's; these Christenings could have been performed in St. John's, likely at St. Thomas's.• Minister/Priest: P. Note that this name is not among those whose births are registered to William and Mary in the C of E Ferryland records. Roberta and Richard may have copied the name from another Carter family by accident. Needs to be checked.
Email from Enid O'Brien to Buzz Gardiner cc to me on 301106: Catherine called "Kit" was born March 1880 (ref Census). She was baptised at FD in the RC Church (the day before her marriage to Michael White on 2/2/1910 and her age was given as 28 yrs which would mean she was born 1882? She was christened Kate Josephine by the priest. This indicates to me that she wasn't christened previously (hence I found no record of her baptism). The RC church would have recognized a baptism in the Anglican Church and she would not be required to be baptised even if she was going to pursue the Catholic faith. Her obit in the Evening Telegram on Mar 18, 1952 (died on Feb 16) calls her Catherine Weston Carter White. Her headstone "Catherine Carter White, died16 February 1952; 72 yrs. erected by her husband Michael and children Larry, Hughie, Ronald, Blanche, & Mary". This would mean she was born in 1880. (So we have two records stating she was born in 1880, ie,census and headstone) meaning that the priest was wrong in her age being 28 yrs.
Email from Enid to Buzz on February 2, 2007: The obit of Catherine Carter White is as follows:
Evening Telegram, March 15, 1952 Passed away at Ferryland on February 16th, 1952, Catherine Weston White, wife of MJ White and daughter of the late WTS and Mrs Carter.
Mrs. White spent all her life in Ferryland where she was well loved by the people for her great kindness and ever ready sympathy to those in sorrow and distress.
The respect in which she was held was very much in evidence on the day of her funeral. As her flowered covered casket moved through the settlement followed by most of the inhabitans all flags were half-mast and blinds down. Sympathy is extended to her sorrowing husband, 2 dsgts, 3 sons and 4 sisters. (Note it didn't say Catherine Mary Josephine White even though we know that was the name on the baptism).
Email from Enid O'Brien to Buzz Gardiner cc to me on 301106: I think Sarah probably died young because she doesn't show up in other info I have on this family.
120207: Jean Fox (Carter) Stirling is absolutely convinced that this Catherine Weston Carter is the one and the same person as the Sarah Caroline Weston Carter that I had previously listed as her sister. I have merged them on the strength of her conviction that this is true. I copy below her explanation from two emails: "their (WTS Carter and Mary Louisa Hanrahan) daughter Caroline joined the Catholic church, took a new Christian name and married Michael White." "1877, Jun 25 Sarah Caroline* Petty Harbour R.C. Records: Marriages *Kate Carter, daughter of Mary Louisa and William Thomas Skinner Carter, was Baptised Kate Mary Josephine at the Roman Catholic Church on 2February, 1910. The next day, 3 Feb. 1910, aged 28, she married Michael White, aged 30. Witnesses: John Fowler, Beatrice Morry." "People's age can be given verbally to the parish priest, or even to a census taker, or on a gravestone is not as certain as statistical dates. The Baptismal date I found for Sarah Caroline Weston Carter, C of E parish records, is 25/6/1877, so that satisfies me. Also, she is the only daughter of those listed who could possibly fill the bill. I have two other sources -- one is Ida; Kate was her grandmother, and Ida was born in her house, and she and her parents lived with Kate and Michael White, and remembers her well. I also have heard a tape that Harriet Carter Alderdice's daughter, Doris Macgillivray made of her memories of growing up and all these interrelations. Probably Kate didn't want anyone to know she was older than her husband, and gave her date of birth as the same as his????? I find that a lot in researching, especially in census."
130207: Enid O'Brien remains dubious as I do that Sarah Caroline Weston Carter and Catherine Weston Carter are one and the same person: "Personally I don't think Sarah Caroline Weston is Kit but Jean might know something I don't know. I think this mainly because of the dates but also because Sarah Caroline Weston doesn't appear to have any connection with the name "Kit". My deep down feeling is that this child probably died young and that is why no one remembers her. It is just of those little mysteries that would need to be solved."
Email from Jean Carter Stirling 170207: "Re Kate Carter --I also found, from the audiotape by Doris MacGillivray that WTS Carter had six daughters and 2 sons, and she named them. Of course, she named one "Kit", which is the name by which she knew her. I found baptisms in the parish records for 6 girls and 2 boys, andI feel pretty sure one of them had to be Kit (Kate). I spent months some years ago, trying to find something definitive, just as you are doing now. I have come up with (as I said before) either the Sara Caroline entry was made incorrectly by the minister of the time and it should have been Sara Catherine; or else she gave the wrong age at her re-baptism and subsequent marriage, either on purpose to appear to be at least the same age as Michael rather than 3 or more years older, or once again a mistake was made in the Parish record. From then on, her age remained the same as her husband's, and both the census and the gravestone reflect that. I can't think of any further information to look for to help us with this.
I have found over and over again, and often in the census in England, that the wife tells her age as less than her husband's even when I have found her birth record and it proves her given census age to be incorrrect. (That's why I think it's a possible explanation in this case). Nothing more comes to mind! Jean"
261009: From NGB website:
2/3/1910 White, Mike (30) Carter Kate Mary Joseph (28) John Fowler Beatrice Morey L.K. Vereker
Note the full name given for her, which is quite different than what I had. No mention of the "Weston" but several other names not previously shown. Also note that Beatrice Morey is actually Trix Morry.
101213: Laura Morry Williams notes in her book Over The Fence that Kit Carter White was the last of the Carters in Ferryland.
050115:
Jean Carter Stirling indicate that the old "White" house in Ferryland northside was actually originally a Carter house: "According to Ida, the house was given to Kit (Carter) White, Ida's grandmother, and the granddaughter of Arthur H. O'B Carter. It became a White property only because Kit was married and that's the way it then was, but it was not deeded to White."
190916:
In his memoirs, "My Fight for Newfoundland", Peter Cashin speaks fondly of Mrs. Catherine White and her husband Mike and the hosptality he received from them during his first election campaign in 1923 and then in subsequent campaigns. He knew she was a part of the Carter family. But he also knew here sister, Harriett, had married Sir Frederick Charles Alderdice, whom he held personally responsible for giving over Responsible Government to the Commission of Government, which her referred to as an illegal dictatorship. He suggested that Mike and Kate continued to vote for Cashins (both his father Michael and himself) and not for Alderdice.
