Enid O'Brien July 22, 2005:

"Shan married Wm John Maher/Meagher from Aquaforte at the RC Cathedral in St John's (Ref Evening Telegram May 3, 1917-3). It also states that Shan was niece of Reverend S. O'Driscoll parish priest at St. Mary's and Mr. P. C. O'Driscoll of this city (St. John's). Her mother was living at Barnes Road at the time and they stayed there until they moved to Aquaforte."

Enid 091109: " must have been a period when this family lived in St. John's. Shan had her wedding reception from her mother's house on Barnes Road. She was also md at the RC Bacilica in St. John's. So it is not surprising that she had her picture taken in St. John's." [ see photo of woman standing in front of houses in St. John's, now identified as Shan ]


101213: There is a mystery surrounding where this whole family came by their money. They always seemed to have more than enough to get by on but almost no one in the family worked except Shan's husband, Bill Jack. Her brother, Johnny, and sister, Phil, who lived with them either never worked or only did so periodically but they all got by. It seems that they must have had inherited money from the Whites or even the Carters. Laura Morry Williams, in her book Over The Fence, recounts that Angus Maher was never short of money as a young man. All he had to do was leave his empty wallet in the kitchen and his mother would fill it for him. Bill Jack and Shan did not get along evidently and he felt that she was a bit high and mighty saying "I married one of them darlings".

In her book Over The Fence, Laura Morry Williams notes that Shan was often called upon to help deliver babies in the village. She also remarks that in their old age Shan and Phil liked to dress up in their best and then walk along the strand to the southside to visit relatives there.
