Re: Fannie Hutchings LeMessurier

I don't have a date of birth for her but there are a few write-ups on her in the newspapers - One, when she was 98 years old and can be found in the Evening Telegram Feb 5, 1944. She is still in St. Pedro California where she resides with her 3 sons. The other one is in the Daily News on 21/2/1945 when she died, age 99 years.

As given in the email I didn't mean to send St. Mary's Church wasn't opened until June 1859 so there is an error in your info as to her being baptised there in 1841.

I don't know about Clive LeMessurier's re John Hedley dying in West Hams in 1866. The Evening Telegram is as follows:

ET June 27, 1918-5 By this morning's express, Mrs. Peter W. LeMessurier and wife left for California where they will reside with their son, Hedley. Mr LeMessurier is the son of the Late George LeMessurier of the General Post Office, was for many years employed as a draper . in the employ of R Harvey and George Knowling Ltd. He retired to a farm on Topsail Road several years ago but lately he and his wife decided to spend their declining years in a more congenial climate. Mrs. LeMessurier is the sister of George H Hutchings Esq Business Manager of Job Brothers.

DN 9/4/1955 Died at San Pedro, California, Mar 20, 1955 Neil Shannon, son late Peter and Frances LeMessurier, Leaves two brothers Hedley (California) Monier (Las Angeles)

Enid O'Brien"

On the strength of this better information I am removing the birth date and Christening location for Frances obtained from the Yetman family tree website. It is clearly erroneous for some reason. I am substituting instead just a year of birth (ca 1846) and location (St. John's, Newfoundland) without mention of the church until such time as I can confirm and expand on this information. CJM

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I am basing this birth date on the stories published in St. John's newspapers on her celebrating her 98th birthday in February 1944 and on her death at 99 in February 1945. Her birth was known to have been in St. John's.; the alternated dates of birth and christening from the Yetman family site are apparently incorrect even though they seem very precise.

Here we have a document in which Judge Carter and Capt. George Hutchings, another prominent gentleman of the day, are acting as the attorneys for Capt. John Stiles, RN and his wife Jane, who have returned to their home in England at Shirley Cottage in Southampton. Jane is a daughter of another George Hutchings, who was also the father of one of the men representing her and her husband in this case, that is, her brother George Jr., who was also a Captain in the Royal Navy stationed in St. John's. The other parties to the indenture are William McCarthy, a shopkeeper in St. John's, and his wife Catherine. The property in question is a part of the extensive waterside premises in St. John's that had belonged to George Hutchings Sr. and was subdivided amongst his heirs.

Notes
General:
180707: This person is added as the father of George Hutchings, who was the father of Eliza Coke Hutchings, solely on the strength of the fact that Bill Walsh's family tree shows Eliza's father as George Jr.

011211: This relationship has been supported by several other sources since then and is apparently factual.

Notes for GEORGE HUTCHINGS from Jackie David family tree on Angelfire: As a reward for spying on the French during their occupation of St John's, George Hutchings was granted property bounded by Water St., Patrick St., Hamilton St., and Hutchings St. He may have left some property to his sister Elizabeth and her husband William Whitten on the South Side. In 1769 he was appointed High Sherriff of Newfoundland (11). In 1785 George gave testimony in London as a witness regarding the American Trade (35-6). By 1794-5, the census recorded George as, in St John's, a non-resident owning 27 houses (62).

161117:
George's Will and a related document pertaining to property he had been managing on behalf of absentee landlords in England were found amongst the Miscellaneous Deeds and Wills (GN169), copies of which are on the website of the FHSNL accessible to members only. I downloaded copies of these and put them on my website because of the kinship, albeit remote.

George's brother, Robert's will is also found there and I downloaded it too.

Robert Hutchings gives his calling as Boat Keeper (Byeboat Keeper). George gives his calling as Planter, which is considered somewhat more substantial than a Bye Boat Keeper, his brothers professed status. George leaves his earthly belongings entirely to his beloved wife Jane (née Adams), not forgetting however, his brother's bequest to his own son, George.

A second document is found which relates to George Hutchings. Apparently, in addition to being a Planter, he was a merchant, and whether in that capacity or otherwise, he acted as an agent for several absentee landlords in England who issued him a Power of Attorney to act on their behalf in the management of their properties. After his death, his widow, Jane, wrote to these absentee landlords and requested that they turn over these properties to her. Oddly enough, they agreed to do so. It seems there must have been some confusion over the eventual ownership of the properties in question. Also, the correspondent (a lawyer?) who wrote to Jane confirming the agreement of the two couples who had been represented by her late husband to relinquish their claim on the properties, mentioned that her children in England were all well but that some of them had expressed a wish that they had seen a copy of their father's will. There appears to have been some concern on their part that, in their absence from Newfoundland, their mother may have been taking advantage of and claiming all of their father's assets.

Notes
General:
181214:

I have chosen to include a tentative birth year that corresponds to the long period of births of the children in this family and the ages of the first and last children born. It is only a guess and not based on any evidence though the death register at the Cathedral says she was 51 at the time of death.

This from the Weekly Express:

Vol. 11 No. 5
Tuesday, February 1, 1859
Died - On Sunday morning last, deeply regretted and universally esteemed Hannah McKillop, the beloved wife of Thomas BENNETT, Esq., aged 51 years. The funeral will take place from Mount Dorset tomorrow (Wednesday) at One o'clock.
