"BISHOP, Cyril Desmond - Passed away suddenly on Monday, May 27, 1991, Cyril Desmond Bishop of Carbonear, age 74 years. A resident of Carbonear for the past 41 years, Cyril was well known to many from his years as a photographer in the area. His first 30 years were spent in Grand Falls where he leaves many friends and acquaintances. Predeceased by his wife Beryl. He leaves to mourn his son Desmond and wife Jytte, grandchildren Paul and Adrian, daughter Gwen and husband Ray Walters, grandchildren Brian and Jeff and son Nigel and wife Brenda, grandchildren Jennifer and Darryl. Visitation at Noel's Funeral Home, Water Street, Carbonear, Friday, May 31st, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services at St. James Anglican Church, Carbonear on Saturday, June 1st at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the Organ Fund, St. James Anglican Church."

In Mom's 1936 diary she reports that Cyril had a relationship with a woman named Thelma (surname not given) resulting in him abandoning her and she having a child (name and gender unknown) in October 1936. If this is all correct, this would be prior to his marriage to Beryl and before his at least two extramarital affairs with women named Ruby Clayton and Myra Jean (surname unknown) that also resulted in two children, the first named Cyril Bishop in 1939 and the second named David Cyril Douglas Welsh in 1941.

Here is the entry concerning this presumed first affair and child recorded on May 26 and 27:

May 26, 1936
"Had a letter from Cec (a man that Mom was apparently keen on who was away from St. John's at this time) this morning. He says that it is perfectly true about Cyril and Thelma which is rather unfortunate. This lets me out of any future trip to Grand Falls at least in the immediate future."

and

May 27, 1936
"I got a full confession out of Cyril last night. I think it is a rotten shame that he should now be quit of all worry and that poor child just in the midst of all her trouble with an arrival not expected till October."

My suspicion is that Uncle Ed, who had spoiled Cyril rotten from the day he was born, paid to hush up this scandal.

It only just occurred to me today when I found Uncle Ed and Belle's marriage record and realised when they were married five years before Cyril was born and then noted for the first time that there is no birth/baptismal record anywhere to be found for him that he was almost certainly adopted. This may have explained why uncle Ed doted on him so much. I wonder did Mom know this and never let me know.
