• Occupation: Wharf & Breakwater Builder (Government Job). 050821:
This information from Mom is not supported by any evidence in records. It was also said that the was eventually a senior public servant inspecting public works and that he travelled widely on the job, not just in Newfoundland but elswhere, even bringing back a parrot, seen in a number of photos, from one of his trips. This is all hearsay from Mom and may or may not be true.• Alt. Birth: 1853, Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Alt. Birth: Jun 1853, Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Alt. Birth: 3 Jun 1855, Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Shoal Harbour, now Cavendish, according to Mom but the marriage record says Heart's Delight. I think that may have referred to the parish more than the specific location.
150318:
1921 Census gives Jacob Bishop's birth place as Heart's Delight (not specifying Cavendish) whilst it shows Jane Chislet as being from Islington specifically. This is odd since I was always of the impression that he was from Cavendish proper. Perhaps it had not yet been so named in 1921.• Occupation: Fisherman, 1871, Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Occupation: Fisherman, 13 Apr 1886, Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Interesting: Description of the sinking of the Lily, 16 Sep 1889, Point Amour, Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. For reasons unknown, Jacob Bishop inscribed this note inside the front cover his personal bible:
"September 16 1899
The Lily lost at the
Sholop an Seven men
Save by roapes from the
Land on the 17 except
33 that got on shore in the night"
It seems likely that he had some personal involvement in this incident but he does not explain how that might be.
Here is a brief accoung of the same incident on a provincial website associated with the Point Amour Lighthouse:
"On September 16, 1889, the 720 ton British Naval vessel, HMS Lily, was attempting to intercept a mail ship en-route from Montreal to Great Britain. Powered by sails and engines, the Lily had left Brig Bay, Newfoundland, and was steaming into Forteau Bay in a thick blanket of fog when it ran aground near Point Amour. The nearby fog horn could not be heard above the roar of the sea and the noise of confusion aboard the boat. Thomas Wyatt, the light-keeper at the time, along with his assistants, heard the firing of the guns from the distressed ship, and ran to assist with the rescue. Although the ship was only 150 feet from shore, seven men lost their lives in the heavy sea. As the Lily sank to the bottom, with only its masts above the ocean, Thomas Wyatt got a line to the ship and rescued four men who were clinging on to the gear. The British Admiralty credited Mr. Wyatt as being a hero, and presented him with a clock in appreciation of his help with the rescue, and his care of the survivors of HMS Lily."

There were an unknown number of other children who died in childhood.
Jane Chislett forced the family to move to Cavendish and back to St. John's during the war so that her sons would not be conscripted.

[There are some figures scribbled on the page calculating Jane's age at her death in 1955, presumably added by Nan or Muriel. Also the year 1882 is written there, the year of birth of their first child, Aunt Sue. Sue was conceived out of wedlock, not uncommon in outports in those days, since there were no preachers in residence in most of them. But it seems someone was doing the math and realised she was born only one month after her parents were married!

Before discovering these notations I had no idea of the names of Jane's parents.
I am not aware at this time of the significance of the notation concerning the shipwreck. I assume Jacob was somehow involved.

250515:
I was always under the impression, presumably based upon what Mom told me, that Jacob was from Shoal Bay, now Cavendish, and Jane was from Island Cove, later Islington, and now part of Islington-Heart's Delight. But the Vital Statistics record for their marriage places him in Heart's Delight and she in Island Cove. In those days Heart's Delight was quite distinct and was a village on the other side of Island Cove (Islington) from Shoal Bay (Cavendish), so there should have been no confusing the two. At this stage I don't know how to sort this out but thought I had better record this doubtful information in hopes of sorting it out later.
160715:
Further to the above, while Jacob Bishop appears on the Voters List of 1889 as being a resident of Heart's Delight, when this same Voters List was edited and added to the book The History of Islington and Heart's Delight (which carefully avoids any reference whatsoever to the nearby village of Cavendish, formerly Shoal Bay or Harbour) Jacob's name does not appear on their list and neither does his brother Corbett. This seems to imply that someone edited him out as a non resident of either Islington or Heart's Delight. The mysery remains unsolved.

Although we knew there were other children who did not survive to adulthood, the discovery of this name on Jacob and Jane Bishop's gravestone came as a surprise. Nothing was known of him prior to this and it may be that he was born and died in Islington (Heart's Delight). Even that is not certain since there is no record of this in the parish transcript at PANL, which is extremely sporadic.
