James Henry Chislett

      Sex: M
AKA: James Chislett 1023,3387,3388
Individual Information
Birth Date: 28 Jan 1776 - Islington, Middlesex, England 718,3389
Christening: 18 Feb 1776 - Finsbury, London, Middlesex, England 718,3390
Death: in Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada 3384
         Burial:
 Cause of Death:

Events

• Alt. Birth: Finsbury is very near Islington and may have been a part of it at that time, Jan, Finsbury, London, Middlesex, England.

• Alt. Birth: Cir 1776, Islington, Middlesex, England.

• Alt. Birth: Between 1780 and 1790, Wallasey, Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England. 270615:
Everett Chislett suggests he must have been born between 1780-1790 because he was up on charges in 1807 in Trinity and was most likely a young servant hired by the merchant who is charging him with theft.

• Alt. Birth: Cir 1790, Wallasey, Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England.

• Alt. Birth: 1799, Wallasey, Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England.

• Court: Conviction for stealing tobacco, 29 Apr 1807, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. For what it is worth, the first record of the name refers to a court record dated April 29, 1807 in which a James Chislett, the servant of D. Durrell of Trinity, was convicted of stealing tobacco and given 12 lashes.

• Court: Sued for derliction of duty, 25 Apr 1809, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Trinity Court record of 25 April 1809 shows James Chislett was sued for neglect by his employer, George Garland and Company and forced to lose part of his wages.

• Occupation: Planter, 1823, Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Religion: Wesleyan-Methodist, 1827, Hants Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. During this period at least, the family attended the Methodist Church in Hants Harbour and had two children, Hannah Maria and James Henry, Christened there. They may have been using this church for no other reason than the fact that there were no Anglican churches in existence in Island Cove (Islington) or nearby at the time. The two children had been previously Christened as Anglicans and this is registered at St. Paul's in Trinity.

Notes
General:
040909:

I suspect that this couple and their daughter are the same people as three with the same names who are recorded in the Wesleyan Methodist birth registry in Hants Harbour at about the same time. It could be coincidence but more likely they were in the process of changing faiths to accommodate a church that came into being closer to where they lived (Islington - Island Cove).

250814:

It is highly unlikely that the last three children shown for this family actually belong. The dates are far too late. I copied this information from a family tree on Ancestry and it is most likely a mistake.

260615:
I have discussed the question of the validity of the middle name Henry for James Chislett born between 1790 and 1800 as well as for his son, also known as James (or James Henry) born 1824 with Paul Cohen. There is no solid evidence to support the middle name and it may be apocryphal.

270615:
Eldred Chislett's article on the Chislett family of Island Cove (Islington) in the Newfoundland Ancestor, Vol. 20 No. 1 dated 2004 gives a basis of research on the family that is a starting point for further investigations. I have copied that article into a Word file and cleaned it up a bit and it is enclosed in the Media Gallery for James Chislett.

Eldred does believe that Charity, Samuel and Frederick are also children of this couple but the gap between their dates of birth and that of James makes this seem highly unlikely.

190819:

According to the Keith Matthews name file for Chislett, James is the first person of this name to appear in Trinity Bay and the first record was not an auspicious one. For what it is worth, the first record of the name refers to a court record dated April 29, 1807 in which a James Chislett, the servant of D. Durrell of Trinity, was convicted of stealing tobacco and given 12 lashes.

210819:

Jane (janechis@aol.com) responded to my enquiry about a relatively close match on my Autosomal DNA on FamilyTreeDNA. It turns out that the test results on that site were those of her husband. They live in England are were not aware of any members of their family who went to Newfoundland. However there was a James Chislett born to Isaac and Jane in Islington, Middlesex in 1776 who she speculated could be the James Chislett who is the hypothetical patriarch of all Chisletts in Trinity Bay since he is the earliest known person of that name to appear in court records in the first decade of 1800. Sounds to me like a very worthwhile line of research to follow up on.

270407: From Julie Mathieson, Diocesan Archivist, ENL who read the records of the Anglican graveyard on Forest Road for Lanny: "Good morning Lanny, I have it. At least I am pretty sure this is the one. This is what the records show; Jane Bishop, died 17 January 1950, buried 18 Jan. 1950 at age 87, Sec. K, Lot 2, Plot 3 Jacob Bishop, died 2 January 1933, buried 5 Jan. 1933, age 80, Sec. K, Lot 2, Plot 1 John Bishop, died 16 May 1965, buried 18 May 1965, age 69, Sec. K, Lot 2, Plot 16 Could this be Jose? There is another John Edwin Bishop buried May 1965 but his grave siteis in a different Sec. so probably not yours If this account of Jane is the one, then your mother has lived longer that her mother. Congratulations. Please let me know if this IS what you were looking for. I hope it is. Have a happy day. Sincerely, Julia Mathieson, Diocesan archivist ENL"

Note that the old witch added two years to her age. She was obviously proud that she was old (and mean) and wanted to make it seem she was older than she was. Also she was the "Head of Household" and took that title seriously.

I assume this is William and Sarah Naomi as opposed to Willis and Naomi, but it could be either. The fact that both pairs were of about thesame age and bearing children in this community at the same time could easily have led to confusion in the records. Note that the child's name was misspelled (should be Jesse) and the gender is wrong (should be male).
