Email from Jean Stirling 070207: "Cyril Boyd Carter 2/3/1891 -1960 was in WW1, and lost a leg, I remember him as often being in pain. He married a nurse from Wales, Sydney Ann Jones (Nancy), 1895 -1958. They had five children, the 4th son is Peter Terrington Carter, 1927, = Ruth Collier, died 17/11/2001. Terry has one son, Peter is married and lives in Toronto -- no children so far."

He received a severe bullet wound to the right leg in Suvla Bay on 14 Oct. 1915 and was invalided back to the UK after treatment in Alexandria and nearly died in hospital there according to his war records. He was fitted with an artificial leg in England and convalesced in Jersey before being sent home. His leg gave him trouble from the start and he had to go to New York for specialised treatment in 1917. He was back in the UK for a replacement limb in 1920 after the war and again a decade later.

While his military records on file show him as Lieut., The Daily News record of his marriage refers to him as Capt. This may have been a reserve rank.

"Yes, Chris, I have my copy of the Smallwood research on the Carters. Terry Carter's father Cyril Carter had paid Joey to do it in 1937."

More on the above in an email to Duncan Williams, cc'd to me and Enid O'Brien, today:

"IN 1937 CYRIL CARTER (TERRY CARTER'S DAD WHO LOST A LEG IN WWI AND WHO LIVED ON KING'S BRIDGE ROAD) COMMISSIONED JOEY SMALLWOOD, WHO AT THE TIME WAS KNOWN AS 'THE BARREL MAN' ON RADIO VOCM, TO DO RESEARCH ON THE CARTER FAMILY. I HAVE A COPY OF THAT RESEARCH, AND IT IS WHERE I STARTED WITH MY OWN RESEARCH. I'M NOT SURE BUT I THINK HE EVEN WENT TO ENGLAND TO TRY TO FIND MORE. ANYWAY, THERE WAS PRECIOUS LITTLE IN THE WAY OF COLLECTED SOURCES FOR RESEARCHERS, AND AT LEAST HE DID THE BEST HE COULD. THAT SAID, THERE WAS A LOT OF CONNECTIONS MADE THAT HAD NOTHING TO BACK THEM UP, AND I REVISITED A LOT OF HIS CONCLUSIONS."

"CHRIS, WHAT I HAVE IS ONLY A CARBON COPY OF THE ORIGINAL GIVEN TO CYRIL CARTER …. AND I MEAN THE OLD FASHIONED KIND OF CARBON COPY ON ONION SKIN PAPER! I ONCE LENT IT TO DOCH MACGILLIVRAY AND WHEN HE RETURNED IT HE HAD ADDED HIS OWN WAY OF ORGANIZING THE MATERIAL AND I NOW HAVE ONLY A COPY THAT IS MUTILATED. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ORIGINAL. WHEN YOU ARE HERE IN THE SUMMER YOU CAN SCAN THE PAGES. YOU ARE RIGHT, HE HAS LITTLE HAPPENINGS IN THE CARTER FAMILY FOR WHICH HE GIVES NO SOURCE.

It was Doch's wife, Marion, who donated the vast majority of the Carter papers to The Rooms, but oddly and sadly the Joey research notes were not amongst them. I will get a copy of Jean's copy next time I am in St. John's.

Going over Nimshi Crewe's notes on the now disproved Baltimore-Kirke-Sweetland connection, he indicated that he knew in 1959 of the research conducted for Cyril Carter by Joey Smallwood.

It is with great sadness that we had to say goodbye to our precious Danny, as a result of a tragic car accident. Danny is predeceased by his Great-Grandparents Stephen and Ethel Carter, and Grandparents Herbert and Jean Maloney. Left to mourn, his Darling and Love of his Life Sheneen, his two precious and beautiful children, Bella and Liam. Forever loved and sadly missed by his parents Kenny and Linda and loving sister Jillian (Sheldon O'Driscoll). Grandparents Steve and Ita Carter. Parents-in-law Mary and Ted Young. Great-Grandmother In Law Mrs. Yetman. Sisters In Law Megan Richards (Jason, Jaxon). Tammy Warford (Doug, special nephew Dougie). Brothers-in-law Sean Wilcox (Shelly) and Ray Wilcox (Deanne), as well as the Young Family. His good friends Jonathan Carter (Laura), Ricky Williams (Melissa), Chris Brinston (Jacqueline) and his Saturday Night Fight Buddies. Three special cousins Bradley Morry (Cassandra), Jordan Carter (Nicole), and Keith Murphy (Tracy). Also many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Resting at Ryan's Funeral Home Bay Bulls, on Saturday, August 8 from 7-9 pm and Sunday, August 9, 2-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial to take place on Monday August 10 from St. Patrick's R.C. Church at 11 am. Flowers gratefully accepted. Cremation to follow.
