General:
200806: BDM notes that death notices appeared on 09 Sep and 27 Sep 1868 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895 and stated that Deceased was the youngest son of Capt. Robert Carter,R.N. He worked with New York, Newfoundland, London Telegraph Co. at Rose Blanche. The camp was "endangered by severe flooding on the river, he drowned while attempting to swim to safety." His body was brought to St. John's for burial at Church of England Cemetery. Masons attended the funeral. Monier Hutchings Carter, youngest son of Robert and Anne Williams Carter departed this life Sept 6, 1868 being unfortunately drowned in trying to cross Rose Blanche Brooke in service of the N.Y.-NFLD & LondonTelegraph Company; deeply regretted by his sorrowing relatives and friends- in the 34th year of his age. His body was recovered and arrived in St.John's Sept 26 - and was interred at the cemetery on Sunday Sept 27 - Masonic Body and gemeral public attended.
