• Documentation: Michel LeMaeserrer Descendants.FTW.
• Alt. Birth: 1780.
• Alt. Birth: 1781.
• Occupation: Owner, Peter Le Messurier & Company, whalers, Between 1796 and 1800, Hermitage, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Interesting: First Lemessurier to come to Newfoundland from Guernsey, Cir 1800.
• Occupation: Merchant, 1813-1814, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Court: Declared Bankrupt, 30 Nov 1819, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Election: Returning Officer in the election for the 1st House of Assembly, 1832, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It isn't entirely clear to which Peter Le Messurier this refers, the father, properly known as Pierre Broom Le Messurier, who died sometime prior to 1847 and could have been involved in this election, or the son, Peter Paint Le Messurier, who was born in 1812 and could theoretically have played a part at the age of 20. On balance it seems most likely to have been the father.

Notes
General:
The names LeMesurier and LeMessurier are interchangeably used in different sources but the people are one and the same. The latter spelling is more typical to Newfoundland.
There is a tremendous inter-marriage between the LeMessurier family, children of Pierre (or Peter) and his wife Eliza Hutchings and the Matthew Morry / Anne Saunders family:
Peter Paint LeMessurier married Mary Morry, daughter of Matthew and Anne Saunders. Eliza LeMessurier married Thomas Graham Morry (II), son of Matthew and Anne Saunders. William Warner LeMessurier married Priscilla Ann Morry, daughter of Matthew and Anne Saunders
In a subsequent generation, Matthew's granddaughter Helena, by Robert, married Francis Ernest LeMessurier, great grandson of Pierre by George Hare and then Peter Wilson LeMessurier.

In one of many bundles of clippings that wound up in Aunt Jean's hands and eventually that was sent to me by Karen, I found a clipping from a newspaper, no date or name unfortunately but from the layout almost certainly the Evening Telegram, which had been sent to Aunt Jean by Aunt Pat. It was about the whaling industry in Newfoundland in its early days. The reason she sent it was because it included a photo of the whale bones in front of the house of Thomas Graham Morry. But the article also mentioned in passing that "Peter Le Messurier" ran a whaling industry in Hermitage that was eventually bought out by Newman and Company. This would have been Pierre Broom Le Messurier.
A copy of the article is included here in the media folder.

I have just gone through the photos I made last summer at The Rooms of cases in the Supreme Court, Central District, records for 1811 to 1820 (GN-5-2-A-1). Many of the cases of interest involve Peter Le Messurier or Peter Lemessurier. At first I thought that these pertained to Peter Paint Le Messurier, husband of Mary Morry. And then I realized that they could not, because he was only born in 1812. Therefore all of these cases pertain to his father, who was evidently only known as Peter and not Pierre in his business dealings in St. John's and elsewhere in Newfoundland. Here is a list of the cases that are found in this collection pertaining to him. Copies of the records themselves are contained in the Media folder.
Hunt Robinson & Co. v Peter Le Messurier, 30 November 1819 (GN-5-2-A-1 Pg 82)
The amount in contention was £813-16-1, a serious amount of money for those days. And this was for supplies issued to him in the present year only. Moreover, in court Peter admitted owing this amount and other amounts to other merchants which cumulatively came to over £4000! He pleaded that he could not pay as much as 20 pence on a pound of what he owed. He was declared insolvent and David Tasker and Newman Wright Hoyles were appointed by the court as Trustees and Le Messurier was instructed to provide them with a true account of his estate. The outcome of these bankruptcy proceedings is not found here.

I am stepping way out on a limb by creating this person and making her a daughter of this family simply because she is buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montréal where two siblings are buried. If I am right, she was the second child by this name born to Priscilla Ann Morry and William Warner Le Messurier, the first having died in 1860 in infancy.

Not sure why I believed that there was an earlier Priscilla in this family, though that was not uncommon. As far as I can tell now she was the only one of that name in the family.

I believe that the notation by Jill Marshall may be incorrect. There were several Priscilla Le Messuriers. This one may have been the daughter of George Hare Le Messurier and Elizabeth Brown.

200216:
I have made this Priscilla the wife of James Lainé even though he was earlier shown as the husband of Priscilla Ann Le Messurier. This makes more sense. I deleted what I believe to be a spurious death date of 1860 based on poor information in the online Le Messurier family tree, which is rife with errors.
