NB: There is erroneous information in Aunt Jean's LDS database that this Thomas Graham had a second wife named "Clara Isabelle McCoubrey Sweetland" whom he married on 24 June 1930. The name of this woman is actually a composite of the married names (three times married) of the second wife of this Thomas Graham's father, also named Thomas Graham. The marriage date in 1930 is indeed that of his father, who married for the second time to his childhood sweetheart at age 81! She was by then the widow of his cousin, William Sweetland Morry.

Richard Sullivan email 24/05/01 shows a different birthdate (3 July 1887). This is actually the date of baptism. See NGB transcript of HolyTrinity Church records (in which his surname and that of his father are misspelled):

21/02/02 MOREY, Thomas Graham; Baptised 3-Jul 1887; Father - Thomas Morey; Mother - Kate White; Witnesses - Thomas Driscoll and Elizabeth White. Elizabeth White was Catherine's sister and Thomas "Driscoll" should beThomas O'Driscoll, who married Elizabeth in 1876. Surprising to see Elizabeth listed by her maiden name.

02/03/03: Drafted in Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, Reg't. # 2138801 on Jan. 31, 1918; Formerly served 13 months R.C.G.A. Military Service Act. letter and number 166621. (National Archives website).

110807: In the 1930 Census both his and Maud's ages are either given or calculated incorrectly. It shows him as 40 and her as 36, yet the years they have been married (34 and 30 respectively) would be correct if these ages were correct (which they aren't). One Wonders if there was a reason why they both wished to appear younger than they were.

In the US Immigration record of his departure from Yarmouth in March 1924 his age is given more or less correctly as 36. Interestingly, in that record he is recorded as Graham Morry, which is how he preferred to be known later in life, yet in the 1830 Census he was listed as Thomas G.

Graham had written his story about his trip to Victoria in 1911 in a letter which I have not yet found. I think it may have been written to Dad Morry at his request so that he could pass it along to Michael Harrington, a reporter at the Evening Telegram for publication. In any event, I know that the part of the story pertaining to the shipwreck of the BRUCE did appear in an article over Michael Harrington's by-line some time in the 1960s because I have discovered a copy of a follow on article written later which gives the rest of the story and which refers to both the earlier article and the letter on which it was based. Here is a transcript of the second article (an image of the newspaper article is contained in the media gallery):

From St. John's to Victoria, B.C. in 1911
Offbeat history

Several months ago, actually on Monday March 9 and 16 of this year, this column contained parts one and two of "The wreck of the Brace", seventy years earlier (March 24,1911) on a reef near Louisburg, Nova Scotia The Brace, the first to bear that name (there was a later Brace) was one of eight ships built by the Reid interests to fulfill the contract made with the Newfoundland Government in 1898 Because these ships were given Scottish names, starting with "A" and going through to "H", they were dubbed "The Alphabet Fleet", also because they had the graceful lines of a sailing ship, they were sometimes referred to as "Reid's Yachts"
The story of the wreck of the Brace was an eyewitness account written in the early 1960s by Graham Morry, then a resident of Medford, Massachusetts. Morry was a native of Ferryland, who left home in the winter of 1911 to go to the whale fishery in British Columbia. Having joined the "express" passenger train in St. John's which took him and his companions to Port aux Basques, they sailed on the Brace only to be wrecked a few hours later at Scatteries [sic]. Providentially, only one, some accounts say two per sons lost their lives.
I ended the story of the disaster at the point where the passengers and crew of the ill-fated steamer were being hospitably received in Louisburg, and promised that, at a later date, I would complete the odyssey of the Ferryland youth, namely the transcontinental train journey across Canada from Halifax to Victoria in the spring of 1911. I thought this time might be appropriate now that such a big outcry has been raised about the reduction in passenger train services operated by Via Rail in different parts of Canada.
Morry and his buddies, who left St. John's, Sunday, March 19,1911, reached Port aux Basques on Thursday, March 23, and sailed that night for Nova Scotia. After they were rescued from the wreck early Friday morning, a train was sent from Sydney to take the passengers on their journey across Canada. It was nearly dark when the train arrived to take them to Sydney to connect with the regular express, but their jinx was still working against them. A mile out of Sydney the train was derailed, and they had to pick up their suitcases and walk to the railroad station to get aboard.
Because they were all very tired most of them got a good night's sleep. However, Morry woke up not because of the noise of the train but the lack of it. He heard people moving about outside the train and heard voices and looked out the window to find that the train was stopped but still was moving - across water. They were on a ferry crossing the Strait of Canso; the train had been broken into three sections. This was long before the Canso Causeway was built. After the ferry ride was over they went back to sleep and woke to daylight in New Brunswick.
They found the scenery in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick very much like Newfoundland, and looked forward with excitement to Montreal the largest city any of them had ever seen. The sight of Montreal recalled some personal family history to Graham Morry who, I forgot to say in the earlier columns, was a brother of the late well-known Howard Morry of Ferryland Their father had enlisted in the Canadian forces that were sent out to Fort Garry, Winnipeg, Manitoba, during the first Riel Rebellion in 1870; They had to make their way on foot or by batteaux [sic] and canoes. At the time Morry senior was In Winnipeg the city consisted of eight barracks and other buildings and a dozen or so wigwams Graham Morry wondered if his father was the only Newfoundlander who was involved in the Riel Rebellion as a soldier. Perhaps he was- however the famous Dr. Thomas Roddick of Harbour Grace, was the officer in charge of the medical services of the expedition of 1885 under General Middleton.
Graham Morry described the varied countryside that the train went through between Montreal and the Western Provinces which fundamentally has not changed in the intervening years. He was particularly taken by the splendor of the Rockies, and noted the heavy avalanche shelters to protect the trains from falling snow, rock and other debris. There was also the remarkable Rogers Tunnel, fifteen miles long bored through the mountains in corkscrew fashion, and emerging 1,500 feet above where it
entered.
Finally they reached Vancouver and eventually went aboard the CPR steamer Princess Mary that was to take them to Victoria on Vancouver Island. The gang of Newfoundlanders heading for the whale fishery Included Mike Carroll, Jack Walsh, Ned Dav [sic], Eugene O'Dea, Jim Thompson and Luke Evans from St. John's; Pat Emberley, Thomas Whelan of Placentia; Tom Turner from St. Brendan's, Bonavista Bay; Ned Powers, Bob Fitzgerald, Paddy Fowlow, Ike Pumphrey from Conception Bay; Ambrose Williams, Jack Kavanagh, and Graham Morry from Ferryland. There were others but he could not recall their names. It's hardly possible that any of those men are still alive, but it would be interesting to hear from any of their relatives and descendants.
It was March 31 when they reached Victoria, which Morry thought was the "most beautiful city in North America". They had been twelve days en route, not too bad, when it's considered they were in two train derailments (one in Newfoundland, one in Nova Scotia, not to mention the shipwreck). Nowadays the journey by air takes one-tenth that time.
Morry was luckier than most of the other men. His brother Bert lived and worked in Victoria though he missed the arrival of the Princess Mary with Graham and his buddies on board. When the Newfoundlanders, to the number of 44, signed up with Job Brothers in St. John's, Morry had been unable to get a job as the quota had been filled. However, he decided to go with them anyway, because he had a relative in Victoria.
The man in charge of the whaling contingent was Mike Carroll, one of Job Brothers staff in St. John's. When the gang of whalers went to the office in Victoria to be assigned to the different whaling stations on Vancouver Island, Carroll spoke to the company manager who offered Morry job [sic]. But Bert Morry persuaded his younger brother to stay with him in Victoria, so he was separated from his friends.
Occasionally some of them would get a vacation in Victoria and they would get together with the Morrys and have a lot of fun and talk about home and family. The men had signed on for two years, but many of them stayed on for several years more, some permanently. I believe Graham Morry stayed in British Columbia for eight years (including a winter in Alaska). He enlisted in the 5th Royal Canadian Garrison Artillery in Prince Rupert and trained in Esquimault Naval Base in Victoria, where he attained the rank of gunner. His brother Bert was a sergeant-major in the same outfit. The letter doesn't say if he saw any war service; his brother Howard, as many readers know, served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in the Great War (1914-1918) and was a survivor of the First of July Drive at Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme, 1916. Graham returned to Newfoundland December 19, 1919, and sometime after went to the United States where he settled down like so many other Newfoundlanders.
Graham Morry's account of his journey from St. John's to Victoria by train, boat, train, ferry and boat again in 1911, is very well written, and shows an observer's keen eye for the beauties of nature and the works of man. As the train rolled through Winnipeg, he tried to visualize what part of the city had been occupied by Fort Garry when his father soldiered there during the Riel Rebellion in the late 19th century. He was very impressed by Winnipeg, which in 1911 had a population of about 150,000, and many fine buildings on the banks of the Red River.
Their next stop was Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, and he noted the " same, old prairie" his father talked about. The snow was fast disappearing as they entered Regina, headquarters of the Royal Northwest Mounted Pol Police (RCMP). After that the train pulled into Medicine Hat, which he thought was a rather funny (i.e. strange) name. The name originated, he was told, because the hill nearby was shaped like a soft hat, and was surrounded by natural gas that seeped from the ground. The Indians didn't know what kind of gas it was, or if it had a name, but soon found out how to use it for medicinal and cooking purposes. It was ten o'clock in the morning when the train stopped in Medicine Hat, and all the houses and streets were still fully lighted. The Newfoundlanders thought that was odd, but the conductor of the train told them it cost more to turn them off and than [sic] to let them burn (from the gas presumably).
That about covers the fascinating journey of Graham Morry from St. John's to Victoria, B.C. seventy years ago, and some of his subsequent adventures and life story. I wonder if his family, including the Morrys still in Ferryland, have any other records of this member of the Morry brigade, a very interesting group of Newfoundlanders of the old stock.

Email from Enid O'Brien 29/08/00

I was corresponding with an elderly lady in BC, Doris Stephenson (who was born in June 1908 and whose grandfather was Wm Morry) and she gave me the names of their other children (who were probably born in BC)- May (md a Campbell), Emma Windsor (I don't know by the letter if Emma is married to a Windsor or if her name is Emma Windsor Morry); Mona (md to an Elder), and two other names which I THINK are children but the way it was put in the letter I am not 100% sure - Douglas and Violet (Cathcart). I am not sure of the order of the children in her letter.

It was noted that participants at the wedding feast at the home of the mother of the bride (then a widow) included Mr. & Mrs. Cathcart (parents of the groom) of Chemainus, BC; Mr. & Mrs. William Morry of Port Essington, BC; Dr. and Mrs. F. S. Shandley and Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Fairfax of Seattle, Washington.

These latter two couples were common visitors with the Morrys of BC because the wives were both sisters of the bride. Living in Seattle, they became familiar with the family of George Morry, the Klondike gold miner, and socialised with them frequently.

There is no way of knowing how accurate these may be. Several of them seem to be in conflict with information on other transcripts of presumably the same church register also on NGB.

Found on the web by Lanny 101104:

Virginia (Lois) Moss passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2004 in Birch Island. Lois was born in Victoria, B.C. on July 26, 1925, to Jessie Darling Morry (d. 1998) and William Sweetland Morry (d. 1952). Lois was predeceased by her husband Geordie (d. 1994), her sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Sam Couthard (d. 1999), and her son Dennis (d. 2004). Lois is survived and lovingly remembered by her son Danny (Marilynn), daughter-in-law Linda, grandchildren Curtis, Michael, Kelly and Bobbi (Richard), brothers Bill (Jean) Morry and Mike (Val) Morry. Great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and her many friends will feel the loss of this great lady. Lois came to Birch Island to teach school in 1944. She met and married Geordie in 1947. Except for a short time in the early 1950s, they raised their family and resided on Canyon Creek Ranch in Birch Island. Lois loved her many community activities, teaching, volunteering, school board, hospital board, WI, church, square dancing, drama, arts and creative writing. Quote from Lois "I Love the Ranch as I loved the Rancher, and I cannot now imagine any life that would be better than this one I've lived in the North Thompson Valley, with my family and the company of good friends.... " In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the little church in Birch Island (St. Paul and St. John Anglican Church). Memorial service was held at Moss's Pond on Canyon Creek Ranch, 1552 McCracken Road, Birch Island

050811:

I found this birth in the photocopy of the register of St. Nicholas Church, Shaldon, at MHA today. The name seems to be clearly spelled Morry, but the name of the father is only abbreviated and appears to be Wm for William. The mother is also named Mary. None of this fits with existing information that I have on Morrys so I have put it in as an unconnected record for now.
