In email from Enid O'Brien dated may 24, 2002:

"RC Bap FD Rec Aug. 23, 1903 John Jos (illegitimate) to Augustus Carew and Mary Bridget O'Brien Sps. Thos Johnson and Sarah O'Brien. I suspect that Mary hooked Mary Bridget up with Michael O'Brien and Bridget Aylward because the sponsor was Sarah O'Brien their dgt. (this is just guess on my part)."

In the note above Enid was referring to Mary Abbass, who I had mistakenly thought (and had reported to Enid) had Mary Bridget O'Brien as the daughter of Michael O'Brien and Bridget Aylward. In fact both Mary Abbass and Enid agree that Mary Bridget was the daughter of William O'Brien and Ellen O'Brien.

Enid O'Brien has expressed some doubt as to which Augustus Carew this may have been. But in checking on the NGB website there was only one man of that name alive on the southern shore at that time and of the right age to have been the father of this child.

Hi Rick & Chris,

I am afraid I am going to have to resurrect Gus again. You will remember that Gus had a child with Mary Bridget O'Brien on August 11, 1903 named John Joseph OBrien. I don't know why they didn't marry but I do know that Gus was in Seattle in 1905 and was sworn in as an American citizen 23/5/1906. Obviously he had no intention of coming back.

I a enclosing two pictures (1) Mary Bridget O'Brien who later married Nicholas Walsh from Fermeuse. She took John with her to live in Fermeuse and he was called John Walsh. When John left Newfoundland he had to go by the name on his passport and he was called John OBrien even though Nicholas Walsh raised him he wasn't 'officially' adopted. John married X 2 in NY. His first wife was Theresa Murphy from Long Harbour, Placentia Bay, NL and they had 3 children John called 'Jack", Peter and Madonna. One of these boys was Captain on the ferry going to the Statue of Liberty in New York.

His second wife was a Danish lady named Effie (I don't know her 2nd name). I an told the picture I am attaching is probably Effie and John.

What I was wondering from you Rick is would take a look at John and ask your self 'does he look like Gus"? I have never seen a picture of Gus so I can't compare it to it.
