I am sending these [photos] one at a time because I sent a few to my sister and she had problems getting them open. This one is of grandfather, Arthur Carew. I may have mentioned to you before that Arthur died a young man with diabetes. All Esther/Henry Carew's sons were engaged in shipping. They didn't fish although the grandsons did. They brought salt, vegetables from PEI and went back and forth to what was called the Boston states. Henry died suddenly in 1895 with either an aneursym or stroke. He had just sailed into Bowring wharf when he went unconscious and died.

Dear Chris,
One small comment on this email. The address listed for Gus in the 1906 Seattle City Directory, 1023 6th Avenue North, was the large house my grandfather George William Morry purchased from my great grandfather Robert Marshal in 1905 after he married my grandmother Mary Marshall Morry. It was frequently opened temporarily to various family members in need. Amazingly it still stands in good condition. It is on Queen Anne Hill directly North of Seattle's Space Needle. You can view a picture of it on the King County Assessor's website by entering the address in the property search section.

Enid O'Brien email dated 06/09/00
"Augustine called "Gus" went away from home and never came back. I have a letter sent by Ellen Morry in Seattle to Irene's daughter Mary Ellen (Yard) Alyward in New York giving an account of Gus's death. Just from the gist of the letter it appears that he was one of those happy go lucky fellows, who didn't go to church, didn't get married, had a girl friend, worked longshore in Seattle, had a stroke, ended up in a nursing home and to everyone's amazement when he died he had the rites of the church, had his old buddies show up at church and the priest gave him a very nice send-off. They were all kinds of shocked that he had kept a set of rosary beads and had such a nice funeral."
Enid O'Brien email dated 23/05/02:
" Augustine Carew. You have him married to Mary O'Brien, dgt of Bridget Aylward/Michael O'Brien. I am 100% positive that this is not correct. I have done a lot of work on the O'Brien's and this Mary Bridget O'Brien is the daughter of William O'Brien/Ellen O'Brien. Gus was never married although he is probably the father of this child because they are both from Cape Broyle. The birth record states "illegitimate" and the father is Augustine Carew (so I imagine it is Gus if it is not one of the Carews from Witless Bay). Mary married Nicholas Walsh and they went "up the shore" to live. The child, John, went by the name John O'Brien. Gus was a prospector and went to Alaska. He didn't strike gold and ended up working long shore in Seattle. He had a stroke and was in a nursing home @ the time of his death. I have an account of his last few days from his girlfriend Mary Lynch."

Doing obit lookups at AC Hunter Library for David Wells I accidentally came upon this obituary in the Evening Telegram on May 31, 1963, more than a month after his death in Seattle:

080714 from Rick Morry
Dear Chris,
My Mother's summary of Gus Carew's time in Seattle reads as follows:
"Gus (Klondike) Carew, the son of Essie, came to Seattle and worked intermittently on the docks. Likable but drank. Whenever he ended up in the hospital he would send for "Aunt Minnie" (wife of George) who would scold him, help straighten him out and then not hear from him until the next bout. After Minnie's death Gus would send for George J. her son. Kathlyn [my mother] attended his funeral in the late 1950's in the small chapel of St. James Cathedral. ... ."
My grandmother Minnie Morry died in 1958. so my father would not have had much time to tend to Gus after she died if Gus did die in the late 1950's. Perhaps Gus needed the baptismal certificate to get into a Catholic hospital or preserve his right to be buried in the Catholic cemetery?

090714 from Enid O'Brien to Rick Morry and I:
There is a write up in the Evening Telegram in 1907 saying the following about Gus "he had staked a gold mining claim at the farthest point yet reached by a white man in Alaska......". Also there is an account of two men dying on the way. There were thousands of men looking for gold in the Klondike in the 1890-1900s in Alaska. Of course, very few of them struck it rich. I guess that is how he got the name Klondike. I didn't hear about this nickname until I read the obit Rick sent. Your grandfather was one of the lucky ones Rick.
Rick, I have a letter dated May 2, 1963 to Mary Ellen (Yard) Aylward, niece of Gus, from your aunt Mary Ellen Morry. Mary Ellen Aylward then sent it to Gus's sister, Clara Costello, who saved it. It was a very good and humorous account of Gus's funeral and, Chris, this is what Mary Ellen Morry said about Mary Lynch and Gus "He was in a nursing home for ten years. He had a friend - a Mary Lynch, who kept in touch with him for years and even arranged for his funeral and burial. This Mary Lynch is truly a fine and wonderful little person. She kept Gus in the church, told George he had the rosary mother had given him some years back. She said he always kept it". I am not sure by this account whether Gus was romantically involved with Mary Lynch or if she was just a true friend. It sounds like a friend to me what do you think?
Another thing I was told by one of the relatives in Cape Broyle is that there is a place in Alaska called after Gus called Carew Point, Yakutak, Alaska.
140817:
In his regular column called "The Barrelman" in September 1938 Joey Smallwood reprinted the article about Gus going to the Klondike and Alaska (see the media folder).
From Enid O'Brien 140614:
Gus had a stroke about a year before he died and was in a nursing home. He was working longshore in Seattle.
