Notes

290806:

It appears from the caption on the gravestone of Thomas R. Payne dedicated by his 3rd wife Hattie that Raymond was her natural son. The other children appear to have been by his second wife Mary, but I may be wrong on this. I am only deducing it from the evidence I have so far and birth records need to be examined to be sure. In further support of this I note that in his will Thmoas refers to the other three children as "my" son and "my" daughters, not "our" son and daughters.

Today I am deleting from this record the existence of a second son Henry (born 1805) who existed according to my Aunt Jean's records but not according to Helen Steinke's more accurate Winsor information.

5-Dec 1801 St. John's Peter WINSOR Sarah PAYNE Elizabeth Gascott, Francis Payne STJB [Peter Winsor (1781-1864) was born at Denbury, England. He eventually settled at Aquaforte. In the 1830s, he was the member for Ferryland District, in the House of Assembly.]

NB: Notes are by Jill Marshall and/or Kevin Reddigan who are both partially responsible for the collection of Ferryland marriages in St. John's churches that appears on the NGB website.

090818 from Notes by Nimshi Crewe (MG281):

"5 Dec. 1801. Peter Winsor and Sarah Payne were married by me, John Harris. This marriage was solemnized between us: Peter Winsor Sarah Payne In the presence of: Richard Penny Elizabeth Gascott (Her X Mark) Thomas Payne.

Above is an extract from a marriage register of the Anglican Cathedral, St. John's, Nfld.

N. C. Crewe 14 Nov. 1966"

270919:

Anna Elton Morris's research notes given to me by Patricia Lester Pike in July 2019 suggest that they were married in Harbour Grace. I have seen such errors in regard to other marriages that were in fact performed at the Anglican Cathedral and have not found out what the source of this error is.

Erected by ?????

300621:

There is a problem with this family. The first known child was born in 1804 but then no others are born until 1815. There is no event that has ever been revealed that could explain such a long lapse in births in a family. It is known that Peter and his brother Jacob were held prisoner by the French from 1811 to1814 but this does not explain the long lapse in time between the marriage and the birth of their first son, Henry, and the long lapse between when he was born in 1804 and their next child was born in 1815.

I am of the opinion that the date of marriage and the identification of Capt. Henry Winsor (1804-1850) as their first child are both questionable facts. This may be a different couple of the same names.

More likely this Peter and Sarah did not marry until around 1814 when Peter was released from the French prison and hence Elizabeth Sarah Winsor was their first child. This would require a great deal of research to prove and it might never be possible to do so because of the paucity of information available.

300621:

An extensive search for Sarah and Thomas Payne as brother and sister in Devon at approximately this time turned up two records in the Upton Hellions Church Register two pages apart, parents Sarah and Thomas Payne. This is too much to be a coincidence and I am sure this is they.

I am connecting Sarah and Thomas Payne to a common but unknown father because it seems unlikely that they both lived in Aquaforte but were not of the same family. However it is possible that they were cousins. This requires more research.

To the Right Honourable Lord Goderich

Reports having reached us that it is the Intention of his Majesty's Government to impose a duty upon all articles imported into this Island; and that an increase of Duties on Spirits is also contemplated.

We the principal, but poor Inhabitants of this place, humbly beg to remonstrate against the intended measure; and we Implore of your Lordship's most serious consideration of the depressed state to which we are already reduced, from continued unsuccessful Voyages in the Fishery for we do with truth assert, that if the intended measures takes place and greater burthens laid on us, that it will be impossible for us to subsist.

We confidently hope that your Lordship's quiry into, and faithful representation of these facts, that the intended measures will be abandoned; and in Duty bound we shall ever pray.
