The wife and son Richard are very questionable. I cannot really read the baptism record of the son and it is only from that I can presume that this is the connection.
Other entries following this one are equally hard to read. The Minister or clerk who made these entries was almost illiterate and could not write in a legible handwriting. I therefore believe due to gaps in the births that I was able to discern that there were likely other baptisms recorded that I could not discern belonged to this couple.

I have no idea if this person is a member of this family. I am simply entering him as such as a convenience until I find out for sure where he belongs. All that is certain from the burial record is that he was an adult when he died in 1649/50 and that he "died suddently in the high way". Probably not run down by a car!

I'm really not sure where the baptism took place. I'm fairly confident that St. Luke's existed in Ferryland from about the early 1830s onward and it may be that all Aquaforte families travelled there for baptisms, marriages and funerals. Bishop John Inglis, who was responsible for Newfoundland but resided in Nova Scotia, came to Newfoundland in 1832 and consecrate a number of churches in the outports, possibly including St. Luke's However, I do not know the exact date that St. Luke's was built.
Of note in regard to early Christenings that are supposed to have happened at Ferryland is the name of the minister is P. Perring. He was assigned to work out of St. John's; these Christenings could have been performed in St. John's, likely at St. Thomas's.• Minister/Priest: P. There is some writing beneath that but I cannot make it out. It may be the addition of his wife's death information.

300109: Information from Wanda Garrett: John Arthur Allen Winsor born 11 Apr 1858. He died in 1863 - was buried 23 February 1863 according to the Church of England Records for Ferryland.
140813: No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date. Also no way of knowing whether the christening took place at St. Phillip's in Aquaforte or St. Luke's in Ferryland as this information was not recorded on the register at Petty Harbour.

190912: NGB now has a transcript of the register of burials for St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church thanks to volunteer Jill Marshall who submitted the results of her work in February 2012. This is her notation for this person:
"John Jillard [sic] WINSOR, Hamilton Street, Mar 16 1887, Mar 18, 14 yrs 9 (bap as John Gillard Winsor, born July 9, 1872, son of Washington Hill Winsor & Harriet Allen Chafe)"
I presume the second date, Mar 18, is the date of burial. She notes that the spelling of the second name differs on the burial record from that on the baptismal record. I think the earlier spelling is most likely the correct one and I am sticking with it for now.

291112: I am grateful to Gordon Winsor of Portugal Cove - St. Philip's for providing me with information on an award for valour made to John Jennings Winsor. Gordon began his quest to find out which of two possibilities was correct in regard to the identity of a Capt. John Winsor who received a telescope from the British government in recognition of his rescue of the crew of the Othello in 1869. He was convinced that it was not likely his own ancestor who was of the group from Bonavista Bay (Wesleyville) and was more than likely John Jennings Winsor of Aquaforte. With the assistance of staff at the Maritime History Archive, who accessed data on Master papers and ships' crew lists available in England, today he was able to prove conclusively that this was indeed John Jennings Winsor.
This quest began after he read an account of the event in a book by Robert Parsons entitled Through Dangerous Waters. The relevant pages are found here in the notes. But this is how the award that accompanied the telescope read:
"Presented by Her Majesty's government to Captain John Winsor of the Brig "Magic", of St. John's, NF, in acknowledgement of his humanity and kindness to the master and crew of the Brig "Othello" of Greenock whom he rescued at sea on the 4th of February 1869". (Made by) Froughton and Simms, London.
Attempts by Gordon and Robert Parsons to track down descendants of Capt. John Jennings Winsor in Newfoundland have as yet not been successful. They wish to afford them the opportunity to repatriate the telescope to Newfoundland, which the owners of the telescope who live in Florida would very much like to see happen.

Letter to the editor of the Evening Telegram on January 12, 2013:
was recently learned that a unique artifact originating with Newfoundland and Labrador is now in possession of an individual (not a museum) in the United States. I feel, as do several other citizens of our province, that it should and could be brought back to our people. In 1869 the brig Magic of St. John's rescued the crew of the sinking Othello in the mid-Atlantic. In July of that year, Magic's captain, John Jennings Winsor, was awarded an engraved telescope by the British Board of Trade - the engraving giving the date, Capt. Winsor's name, the ship's name and so on. However, that telescope, either through legitimate antique dealers or through the family perhaps residing in Canada or the United States, now rests in a private collection and is available. It has been determined that Capt. Winsor's origins were in England, but he came to live in Aquaforte - and perhaps later St. John's - where he and his wife, Elvina (Chafe) of Petty Harbour, raised several children: Daniel Jennings Winsor, born in 1850; Frederick George Winsor, 1853; John Arthur Allan Winsor, 1858. It is known Frederick George married Mary Ann Whalen of St. John's in 1875. Do relatives remain? My questions (and of several others now involved in the genealogy of the Winsor family, and the brave tale of rescue and reward): are there any descendants of Capt. John Winsor around today? Are there others, people or institutions, interested in bringing the engraved telescope in its leather-bound case back to our province? The full story of Magic's telescope can be found in my book "Through Dangerous Waters," but that is not the purpose of my writing. I feel we can bring the telescope back to its rightful place. Robert C. Parsons
