Tragically in January and February of 1889 an epidemic of diphtheria raged through the district. All four of the Walker children and Percy died within six weeks.

24 September 1844 was the date given on Aunt Jean's LDS records but I trusted Helen Steinke's more complete and authenticated records more, which showed 1 July 1844 until I got a copy of the family bible in which the date is recorded as Sept. 21st 1844, seemingly settling the matter.

090703: Viewed the photocopy of the register at PANL. Date is definitely the 21st, but the month is missing (!) and could be either July or Sept. The names of the two witnesses are unclear but one seems to be John Winsor, spelled in that fashion, while the names of the husband and wife are both seemingly spelled Winser by the Minister but signed Winsor.

They were first cousins. This seems to have been a common practice in the Winsor family.

General:

Clara Isabelle Winsor's records have been badly mashed on Aunt Jean's records. In the paper copy her father is John while in the LDS records it is Peter Windsor (the latter corroborated by Helen Steinke). Her mother is shown on both as Anna Jennings, but in fact according to Helen Steinke, her maiden name is Anna Jennings Winsor (i.e. she married a man with the same surname as herself).

Helen also indicates that Peter Winsor's name was changed to Windsor in 1891.

I believe that, after the death of his wife in 1894, he moved into town to live with his daughter Clara Isabelle, who was at that time once again a widow. They occupied, at least initially, the house mentioned in the Will above at 27 Victoria St., though she is shown in a city directory living at 49 Victoria St. a few years later when her father was still alive. This could be a mistake as the numbers on Victoria St. only go to 47 today.

New information provide by Helen Steinke in email dated 10/07/01:

The Children of Peter Ford and Leititia Tionby (Blackbeard) Walker are Percy - 1883 born in S. Africa to Feb 1889 - died of Diphtheria Dudley Charles born Sep 1884 in South Africa Daisy Maud born about 1888 in Windsorton, South Africa died 8 Jan 1955 Seymour William born about 1891 south Africa Clifford Ford born about 1891 in South Africa died 13 Apr 1945 in Groote Schuur Hospital, Capetown, South Africa. He was wounded in World War1 - was a German War Prisoner.. He is buried in Military Lot 968036 Capetown (Maitland) Cem. The man in charge of War Graves there even went out to the Graveyard for me, to find the grave, and he could not find it. I received a letter from him, and he gave me the address of a relative - I wrote -but received no response.

Leititia came into the marriage with 4 children and they all died Feb 1889 during the Diphtheria epidemic, along with Percy, 1st child from this marriage.

"Peter was well educated. He received good business experience working with his father, who was a merchant in the community. His father, often known as Peppery Peter because of his temper, went to St. John's where he traded for goods to bring back to Aquaforte. These he traded with the fishermen for fish, which in turn, he took to St. John's to sell. Peter's brothers often went to St. John's with him. The story is told that on one trading excursion, after a very difficult time of haggling over prices in St.John's, son Peter got fed up and instead of returning to Aquaforte he shipped out of the colony."

"Peter discovered diamonds on his farm and immediately established the Windsor Diamond Mining Co. (His main company was P. F. Windsor & Co., Limited with a London Office at Suffolk House, Lawrence Pountney Hill, Cannon Street). The politician and founder of the DeBeer's Diamond Company, Cecil Rhodes, was a close friend and neighbour of Peter's. Eventually, Peter sold out to DeBeer's and made a sizable fortune. Peter supported Rhodes in his political views and took an active part in campaigning during elections on behalf of his friend. It was at the great Imperialist's request that Hebron was subsequently renamed Windsorton."

"Peter made three return trips to Newfoundland. On his return in 1891 he took two of his brothers, John, James and Henry Charles back with him on a trip to London, England. His sister Daisy said that on this visit to England he legally had the "d" put into the name of Winsor."

Anna Elton Morris's Windsor family history notes that "Dudley Charles had to go to Johannesburg for a serious operation, the strain was too much [for his father]. He suffered a fatal stroke on May 6, 1928."
