There appears to be an error in the name of the spouse of one or both of Peter and Harry Winsor. In the one case Prelcisa Ellilton and in the other Patricia Ellitton. I would not put much stock in either being valid.

Marriage Notes

291018:

As odd as it may seem, there were clearly two Henry Winsors who married women named Mary Bikford in Denbury, this pair on April 5, 1738 and the other pair sometime around 1710. Despite the wide gap in their marriages and ages, the two Henrys were first cousins near as I can make out.

• Alt. Christening: "Sept. 21st [1805] Henry Son of Peter & Sarah Winser", 21 Sep 1805, Denbury, Devon, England. Note that this information was taken from the Bishop's transcript that badly transcribed the original register and made many baptism dates appear to have occurred in 1805 when in fact they took place in 1804. But in fairness, the baptism actually was recorded in the original register in 1804 and then again in 1805. It is possible that he was baptised twice for some reason.

In the name of God Amen. I Henry Winsor of Aquefort Newfoundland being of sound mind & perfect health but not knowing the moment that Almighty God may call me from this world and wishing to leave my family in a position of security regarding what property I may have to my lawful disposal I Henry Winsor do make this then to be my last will & testament and although it may not be drawn in prescribed terms yet will be sufficiently clear to be understood. 281015:

There seems to have been a discrepancy in regard to where this marriage took place which came about because the transcript of some of the marriages which seem to have taken place in Harbour Grace according to the transcript found on the NGB website actually show that the event occurred at Ferryland. I do not know why the transcript for Harbour Grace includes some marriages from other locations. Perhaps it is an error on the part of the person who did the transcription or the person who placed the records on the website. I will enquire.

This is what actually appears on the website:

Notes
General:
There are discrepancies on the date of birth and Christening (could be 1805) and also in place of birth (could be Aquaforte) according to Aunt Jean's online LDS records.

Slight discrepancy on date of death too but the date of Anthony Oliphant comes directly from family bible and is more trustworthy.

Enid O'Brien's email of 21/11/01 provides interesting information: Capt. Henry Winsor raised his first cousin Peter Winsor (son of Matthew Symonds Winsor and Charlotte Taylor) after they drowned at sea in about 1845 when Peter was about 10.

I am correcting the dates of death and burial today by reversing them so they make sense. This may not be the correct thing to do without researching the actual dates but it makes better sense to do this than leave him being buried before he died!

160615:
Henry Winser [sic] Master Mariner is Granted a plot of land in Aquaforte in the Southern District Court records: SDC Vol 2 No 301 Fol 196-199 - Grant to Henry Winser 24-05-1841. I am speculating that it is this Henry Winser though indeed there are at least four or five other Henry Winsers and Winsors who could have been alive at the time in Aquaforte. A transcript of the Grant is contained in the Media Gallery.

Similarly, in 1841 another Grant of land was issued to Henry Winsor [sic] this time referred to as a Boat Owner: SDC Vol 2 No 439 Fol 9-12 Grant to Henry Winsor 24-05-1841. Were they the one and the same person? We may never know. The other Capt. Henry "Winsor" was this man's son and would have been an infant at the time of the grant so it could not have been he. A transcript of that Grant is contained in the Media Gallery.

171018:

A careful examination of images of the original oldest register of St. Mary the Virgin in Denbury on FindMyPast shows that there was no family named Winser or any close approximation to that name before 1600. Therefore, unless they were born in Denbury and baptised elsewhere, I do not believe that this family was originally of Denbury.

Moreover, I believe that his name was actually Henry Winsor (or Winser), as that name does appear in the early register with a wife named Joane as father of children named Henry and Emmanuel etc.

Also, using the names Henry and Joan led to a marriage in 1651 in Staverton, only 4 miles from Denbury. So I believe I have corrected the errors of others in finding the earliest ancestors of this line.

301018:

To add to this note above, in the second register of Denbury, St. Mary the Virgin, which begins in 1739 (Baptisms to 1812, Marriages to 1753, Burials to 1812), the Minister who arrived in the parish in 1798 has noted that the Burial register from 1681-1739 was missing and never was found during his tenure. Apparently it no longer exists, so this explains the absence of burial information on members of the Winsor clan known to have lived and died in Denbury during these years.

161018:

There is no sign of a marriage record for this couple in 1710 as suggested that there should be from the dates of baptism of their children. But there is a curious record of a marriage on April 6 1738 that involves a Henry Winser and Mary Bikford. By then all their children would have been born and it makes no sense they would then marry had they not done so initially. But the record does exist and has to be explained.

291018:

For reasons unknown, the register of St. Mary the Virgin, Denbury as found on the FindMyPast images tends to skip around from burials to marriages to baptisms and there are gaps from one collection to the other so that they all need to be examined to fill in the blanks.

The first register of 119 pages is dealing with burials in the 1670s when it suddenly jumps to baptisms in the 1720s and misses the first four of the chidlren in this family. Their records are found in the second register. Peter Winsor is found on page 106 of 119 in this collection.

Notes
General:
160112: I am adding this Henry Winsor to this family on the strength of his marriage record at the Anglican cathedral which gives Matthew Winsor as one of the witnesses and also the surname of his wife is Cole, which is a name of the spouse of Peter Winsor in the next generation as well. So I am sure he is "in the family" but I am not precisely sure how.
Medical:
This may or may not be the same Henry Winsor. There were multiple people of this name over the years around this death announcement.

Chris

I am talking there about Henry Winsor, son of Henry Winsor and Anne Coulman. (brother to our Elizabeth Sarah Winsor). This Henry married Catherine Annie Skinner or Sweetland Carter. HELEN

By the way - going back to Henry and Catherine - I was also told that Henry Winsor and Catherine Carter had no children. I have no documents, but I do have a notation that Gert Crosbie says he died age 46 ????? Which would make his death 1875. With your date of 1916 would have been 87. My original source was Anna Elton Morris of St. John's, Additional info from Leslie L. Winsor, of the NLGS - Ancestor.

[NLGS records of C of E Ferryland deaths show he died at age 87 on Jan. 16, 1916 - CM]

James Robertson was Minister at Christening

Anthony Oliphant's Peter and Jacob Winsor Family Tree corroborates this marriage and the fact that it was childless.

120710: There is a Henry Winsor listed as a farmer on the McAlpine's Maritime Provinces Directory for 1870-71. However, it seems unlikely this is he since the place and occupation do not jive.

In reviewing Dad Morry's memoirs of the war prior to leaving for Edinburgh tomorrow as part of the fliming for Newfoundland at Armageddon, I was trying to figure out who the old man he refers to as "Uncle Harry Winsor", whom he visited on his last night home, might be. I have concluded that this is the only possible person, though indeed he is not Dad Morry's uncle but rather his grand uncle, the brother of his grandmother, Elizabeth Sarah Winsor. Dad Morry indicated that he lived in Freshwater, that portion of Ferryland between the Downs and Aquaforte, in a house occupied at the time of Dad Morry's writing by Jim Meade. I had always assumed he lived and died in Aquaforte proper. He certainly was born there and buried there. But perhaps for a time later in life when he was widowed he lived closer to Ferryland to be closer to the amenities available there.

Evidently Henry fell onto hard times between 1858 and 1864 because he was forced to "sell", or more likely borrow against the value of his chattels including farm animals to his mother. See the Media folder. Things don't seem to have improved much before 1875 because he signs an indenture for £25 owing to Philip Hutchings against his house and lands known as Freshwater Farm in Ferryland and that property is already under mortgage for £100 to J. S. Carter. The latter is more likely James Howe Carter, the local Sheriff. In 1878 he is now said to be living in St. John's and has once again fallen afould of his creditors in the amount not stated and a mortgage company has agreed to bail him out, in return for which he mortgages his interest in the William Carter estate then being managed by a William Carter (this is a mistake, it should be Robert Carter) and Peter G. Tessier, plus his property at Freshwater, Ferryland including cattle, dwelling, outhouses, Oil Factory, four fishing rooms. The latter said to be without incumberance, implying he has paid off the former mortgage to "J. S. Cater" and debt to Philip Hutchins. By May 1880 he is also released from this latest mortgage.

It is worth mentioning that on all of these legal documents his name is given as Henry Winser. That could be a mistake by the lawyers. It is possible he was illiterate and did not know how his surname was spelled.

Here is what Dad Morry had to say about this last encounter between the two of them:

"Well, to continue my story, after coming out with
my load of venison, my leave being up
next day, I decided that night to go & see my
Great Uncle Harry Winsor, over eighty at the time.
[He was an old sea captain, and brought a load of
seals in here on the Pelter when he was only 20, and
arrived on the first day of April with 4000 seals.]
He lived in a big house over in Freshwater where
Jim Meade now lives. I did not know what
to give him, so I brought him a couple of bottles of
Whiskey & thought he'd have a nip now & then
through the winter (but I did not know him).
Had talked to with him till about 10 P.M., when
I stood up to leave, & he begged me to take a drink
with him, which I did, & of course staid another
while, & then stood up again; so he said a bird
can not fly with one wing, so after that it was
easy for me to stay. Well, he told me several happenings
of his youth, & his adventures prowling around in different
parts of the world, & we took nip for nip, only I
made sure mine were very small as I did not
want to go home to my mother & father with a sign
of liquor on me. At last I got away about 2 a.m.
feeling pretty good, but I had not drank a third as
much as he. He stood up, took the lamp, & walked
to the front door with me & said good bye. It was
a lovely moonlit night in November, & I can still
see the old man standing with the lamp in his hand
watching me down the lane. I kept going till he went
in with the light, then I stole back & peep through
the blind, & there he was walking back and forth
the floor with his head hanging. Then he'd
straighten up & walk with shoulders erect for a
little while only to slump back again.
At length he stopped walking, he stirred up the fire,
put on the kettle, & got his Bible & started reading.
Then, when the kettle was boiled, he eat a hearty
supper, walked back & forth again for a while
in deep thought, then knelt down to say his prayers,
got in to bed & blew out the light, & I left for
home. I was afraid he'd drop the light before he
got in to bed, that is why I staid so long." 8729
