Dear Doctor MacPherson,
On getting your letter of the 19th about Sir F. B. T. Carter's 1846 marriage to Miss Bailey of Hr. Grace, I felt sure she was one of the family there from whom my friends the late Canon A. G. Bayly, of Bonavista, and his nephew, Philip Bayly Rendell, of St. John's, descend, and rang up the latter to make sure. He told me that was the case, and added that he had given you some details about it. He said that there were three brothers about 1830 here, James Bayly, of Hr. Grace, from whom he is descended (I always knew that the Canon's forebears were of Hr. Grace placement), George Bayly, fahter of Lady Carter, and Robert Bayly, Customs Officer of Trinity, who married a Miss Kelson. The correct spelling of the name is Bayly, by the way. Miss Kelson was a sister of William Kelson, Jr., one of whose two daughters was the wife of George Mews and thus the mother of Arthur Mews and his siblings (wot a word!). A daughter of this Bayly-kelson marriage, Jessie Elizabeth, married in 1866 John Shears (presumably of Openahall, B.B.); perhaps this couple were the direct grandparents of the late Rev. Hugh Kirby and his first cousin, the late Max Shear who died here about a year ago. I have a file on the Carter family which you can see at any time.
Your sincerely,
N. C. Crewe

Departure: On board the ANGERONA bound for Teignmouth, 18 Dec 1835, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From the diaries of Robert Carter:
November 27 - December 18, 1835
Over the course of several weeks plans were being made to prepare the Angerona to sail with cargo and passengers from St. John's to Teignmouth. Amongst the passengers would be Carter's wife, Sarah and their son James, presumably returning for another session at school there. The Angerona set sail on the 18th and Carter returned home to care for his four daughters, Eliza, Fanny, Mary and Emily, the youngest. There is no mention of Robert Jr. who presumably was considered able to fend for himself, though he was only 16 and had two older sisters who were considered to be in need of their father's care.
\f3. Arrival: From St. John's, after 19 day passage, 7 Jan 1836, Teignmouth, Devon, England. Wednesday, 9 March 1836
"Richard Dullanty came from St. John's, brought accounts of Angerona's arrival at Teignmouth on 7 January, 19 dats passage." Arrival: Returning from Torquay, England on SWALLOW, 28 day crossing, 6 Aug 1836, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Saturday, 6 August 1836
The ketch, SWALLOW, Capt. Whiteway, 28 days from Torquay, came off this morning early at 9 a.m. Mrs. Carter and Robert landed from her in health and safety. Departure: for Plymouth on ANGERONA, 15 Nov 1838, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The ANGERONA belonged to her husband, Robert Carter, JP.
Arrival: From Plymouth on board the LADY LOUISA, 4 Jul 1839, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Sarah had one of her daughters with her but we don't know which because she was only named as "Miss Carter".

Sarah [Rendell] Carter, widow of Robert Carter, is the major owner of a property about half a mile from St. John's on the west side of Torbay Rd. by virtue of the default on a mortgage she had given to the grantee, Felix Dowsley. The other owners are William and George T. Rendell, partners in W & G Rendell and Company, by virtue of their somewhat smaller endebtedness from Dowsley. Robert Carter's diary makes frequent mention of his wife's being indisposed for lengthy periods of time without any explanation. Jean Carter Stirling offered this as an explanation on 180720:
Robert's wife Sarah suffered from depression . at one point she spent a week at the mental hospital I seem to remember but I don't recall who told me that . as far as I know it was in the hospital records. When she went to England for visits she seemed to perk up. xxxx Jean.

BDM reports that death notice appeared on 18 Feb 1879 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) Newfoundlander 1827-1884 3) Morning Chronicle 1865-1881 and added that Deceased passed away on the 15th inst. and was the widow of the late Robert Carter, Ferryland. Funeral held from her residence, Cochrane St. on the date of publication Aged 87
Because of her age and name and the attachment to the Carters of both her and William Rendell I have indicated that they are brother and sister and both hail from where we knew William came (Shaldon in Devon). This needs to be verified.
261106: George Le Messurier family tree notation indicates she visited England with son James and husband for the first time in 21 years 0n 31 12 1835 and returned in May 1836 on Ketch Swallow from Torquay
111109: The baptismal record for her daughter, Eliza, as recorded on the NGB website could be confusing: Eliza Howe CARTERRobert & Sarah b Mar 8 1816 bap Sep 27 1818 Formerly of Dartmouth, County of Devon, England, now of Ferryland.
This means that the father was formerly from Dartmouth. Neither her daugher nor Sarah was as far as I know.
050811:
With regard to Sarah's place and date of birth I have seen a relatively clear photocopy of the birth register of St. Nicholas Church in Shaldon and can confirm that she was born there and christened on Sept. 27, 1791.

I have copies of letter exchanges in the 1870's where Sarah Carter (widow, living in a St. John's boarding house not far from her son Robert) speaks of James and his wife (married 1874) Catherine Johnstone of New Brunswick, a widow with grown children, two married. She owns a farm, and they are living there.

Here is a letter transcribed by Jean Carter Stirling from Eliza Howe [Carter] Hoyles to her cousin Ada Augusta Dawson [Rendelll] Durrant informing her of the recent death of Eliza's mother:
Robert and Sarah (Rendell) CARTER
Carbonear,Mar.17,1879
My dear Ada.
Your kind letter to your Aunt came too late for her to read as you will have learnt ere this reaches you, from your cousin George. My dear Mother passed away quietly and peacefully without any suffering and sensible to the last at so great an age -- eighty seven. The last of her family, only Aunt Rendell remains and she is very feeble now. No one can tell how much I miss my dear Mother. I am getting old myself, being two years older now than dear Mamma was when Papa died. She ever took a great interest in you and grieved so much as we all did when we heard that you had found the Mormons, but surely Ada, this cannot be true. I cannot fancy that the little child I loved so dearly has so forgotten her Bible and the early instructions she received. You were a little, very little older than your little cousins when your poor Mother died and I took charge of you. It is not likely we shall meet again on earth. Oh seek your Saviour, Ada, ere it is too late. You may perhaps have done so and are now at peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. But if you hold the doctrine of the Mormonites which is contrary to scripture this cannot be. See to it dear Ada before it be too late. It is a solemn thing to die.
I cannot give you much information about your old friends, I am not often in St. John's now. Wm. Kell (?) died last summer. I suppose you remember him. Thomas G. Morry is also dead and John Morry's wife. Robert Morry at Caplin Bay has lost five daughters in diphtheria. My husband has not been well for some time. He was in England last summer and spent many happy hours with Fanny and her family. They are all such nice young people all engaged in doing some work for their Saviour. There has been a great deal of sickness here this winter. The weather has been very changeable. I trust your children will be a great comfort to you as they grow up. At present I am sure they are.
With very kind love and praying that you may be taught by the Holy Spirit for Christ's sake, believe me to be, dear Ada,
Your affectionate cousin Eliza H. Hoyles
010419:
There are a number of Indentures in the Central District Court Records at the ROD between 1861-1870 referring to a Sarah Carter, Widow. I was uncertain at first whether these referred to this Sarah Rendell Carter. Then I discovered that George Thomas Rendell and William Rendell, her nephews, were also involved in all three transactions so now there is no doubt.
120419:
In one instance what appears to have happened is that she gave a mortgage to a man named Felix Dowsley for a property on the west side of the Torbay Rd. about a half a mile from town. This was in 1861. From what follows, it appears that he defaulted on this mortgage to her as well as another pre-exisiting mortgage to her nephews, the partners in William and George Rendell and Company, and they then jointly sold it to James L. Noonan of St. John's "Landing and Tide Surveyor" in October 1875. No word of what became of Dowsley's equity, if any, in the property at the time that he defaulted on his loans. At the time of this later sale, it was then under a seven year lease to Garrett Dooley. So it appears that for all concerned this was an investment and not a property they ever intended to occupy personally. A few days after the sale, on November 1, 1875 there is another indenture, this time only involving Sarah Carter and James Noonan in which she in turn seems to be getting $800 from him in a sort of buy-back mortgage of the same property he has just purchased from her and her nephews.

Note that there are several Rendell's on this list who cannot be conclusively linked to any of the family members in my family tree. There were probably several families of Rendells in St. John's at the time who were more distantly related or not related at all.

RENDELL, STEPHEN (1819-1893). b Coffinswell, England 24 May; manager Job Brothers & Co 1854-81; MHA Trinity Bay 1859-73; MLC 1874-82; Minister without portfolio 1874-79; d Coffinswell 5 Apr. Rendell came to Newfoundland in 1835 to work with the firm of Job Brothers & Co. He was for many years manager of Jobs' establishment at Hant's Harbour and is credited with having introduced rabbits to Newfoundland there in the 1860s. Rendell represented Trinity Bay in the House of Assembly from 1859 as a Conservative supporter of Hugh W. Hoyles. Elected as Confederate in 1869, he was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1874 by Frederick B. T. Carter. Rendell sat in Carter's cabinet and later that of William V. Whiteway, but was dropped from the cabinet after voicing his opposition to Whiteway's plan to build a railway across Newfoundland. RHC

Credited by Joey Smallwood in the Book of Newfoundland with bringing rabbits to Newfoundland for the first time.

Joey also credited him with playing a role in the development of the cod trap. In an article which appeared in his regular column "The Barrelman" in September 1938, Joey suggested that after the cod trap was invented and first tested by the father of Capt. George Whitley, Willam Henry Whitely, who worked for Job Bros., it was eventually turned over to Stephen Rendell, who was manager with Job Bros., he had a duplicate made by Boston Net & Twine Company and tested for two years off of Quidi Vidi, during which time the bugs were worked out. He had been advised to patent the invention but by then it was too late as many of them had been made and were modified and in use. See the article in the media folder, which came from the ledger of Dad Morry in which someone (Mom Morry or Aunt Pyllis) had pasted interesting news clippings in the late 30s/early 40s.

RENDELL, STEPHEN, merchant and politician; b. 24th May 1819 in Coffinswell, England, son of John Rendell; m. 30thSept. 1852 Catharine Norris in Blackhead, Conception Bay, Nfld, and they had six sons, one of whom died in infancy, and two daughters; d 4thApril1893 in Coffinswell.
Stephen Rendell was the younger of two sons of John Rendell, a Devon trader with Newfoundland interests dating from as early as 1793. In November 1834 John Rendell witnessed the indenture of his 15-year-old son as an apprentice to the firm of Bulley, Job and Company of St John's, whose principals were Thomas Bulley, John Job, Robert Job, and Thomas Bulley Job. This important company, founded by Samuel and John Job towards the end of the previous century, was already emerging as one of the largest Newfoundland mercantile houses with the by now traditional English West Country base. (It would later move its headquarters to Liverpool.) In 1895 the historian Daniel Woodley Prowse recorded Rendell's memories of this era. "The late Hon. Stephen Rendell has often told me that even when he first came to the Colony in 1834, hundreds of sturdy Devonshire lads came out every spring to Rowell's, Boden's, Bulley's, Job's, and many others on the South Side [of St John's harbour] and Hoyle's Town (Maggotty Cove), and to Torbay, Bay Bulls, Petty Harbour. All these 'youngsters' were shipped for two summers and a winter. The coming and going of the Newfoundland men was an event in Devonshire. The rurals reckoned the time by the old Church of England lectionary: Jan! the Parson be in Pruverbs, the Newfanlan men will soon be a coming home.
But not Stephen Rendell: his indenture was for a period of five years of service in return for "good and sufficient Board and Lodging," £20 currency per annum for the first two years, £25 for the third, £35 for the fourth, and £50 for the last year. Bulley, Job and Company for its part undertook to instruct him "in the art and mystery of a Commission Merchant." Quickly proving himself adept in the trade, Rendell at the end of his apprenticeship became an agent of the firm in various capacities in several Newfoundland out ports, principally on Trinity Bay. He managed the firm's extensive business at Hant's Harbour, and at some time, probably in the 1850s, he seems also to have operated businesses in Carbonear and Old Perlican, on his own or in partnership with other merchants. At Blackhead on Conception Bay he met and married Catharine Norris, the daughter of a Wesleyan minister. The Newfoundland Bulletin, possibly quoting a contemporary source, recorded that "as a merchant he was honourable, enterprising and at the same time cautious and very acute and every man, woman and child in Trinity Bay knew him and loved him."
By the mid 1850s the older generation in the firm, now known as Job Brothers and Company, had retired and there were changes in its partners and management. In December 1859 Stephen Rendell joined Samuel Job, Thomas Bulley Job, and Thomas Raffles Job as a partner and also as general manager of the entire Newfoundland enterprise, with his residence in St John's. Here he directed the firm's business in supplying the cod and seal fisheries and in a large export trade with Europe and Brazil. In 1859 Rendell, a Conservative, also began his career in politics when he was elected to the House of Assembly as a member for Trinity Bay. He held his seat until 1873 in 1869 he was one of only a handful of supporters of confederation elected. In 1874 he was appointed to the Legislative Council and during the 1870s was a member of the Executive Council under the administrations of Carter and William Vallance Whiteway
Rendell participated fully in the life of the colony in other ways. He interested himself in the mining and sawmill industries. In 1841 42 he had been a founding member and president of the Agricultural Society of St John's. An eager sportsman since his boyhood in Devon, he was responsible when president for the introduction of the snowshoe hare into Newfoundland to supplement the native arctic hare, whose numbers were dwindling. He imported the hares from Nova Scotia and released them in various locations throughout the island, where they soon became an important local food resource. Throughout his career Rendell devoted himself to the service of public institutions: the St John's Wesleyan Academy, of which he was secretary from 1866 to 1869, George Street Wesleyan Church (opened in 1873), for which he provided the locally quarried stone, and the academy's literary institute, which he helped to found in 1866 and in which generations of Newfoundland public figures down to recent times would receive their initiation and training in debate.
In 1881 the affliction of asthma, from which he had long suffered, forced Rendell to resign from business and leave the colony where he had lived for nearly half a century. He returned to his native Coffinswell, where he died 12 years later at the age of 73. His adult children, who remained in Newfoundland, in their turn were to become prominent in the professional, business, and social life of the island.
