Obituary Overview
Forever in our Hearts
A letter to mom
June Rose Pamela Riggs was born in a small homestead cabin near Wembley Alberta on February 10, 1932 to Francis and Herbert Riggs. She started school there before her family moved to Buffalo New York and then as a teenager moved again to Victoria BC where she attended Victoria High School. After high school she met and married John Morry and helped him build Cantin's Moving and Storage. They had three children in quick succession - Chris, Pam and Greg and then 7 years later added a fourth, Graham.
After selling Cantin's she and John embarked on a number of island adventures purchasing land in Sooke and French Creek and buying a 25 foot cabin cruiser the Boba-Lee. They spent many summers cruising the gulf islands and working and playing on the properties. They stayed in Victoria working in Real Estate until their love for the water and cottage life led them to buy a small resort in Yellow Point on Vancouver Island with her mother Frances and second husband George and her daughter Pam along with a group of friends (Barney and Rose, Hazel and Jim) and eventually her boys. Mermaid Cove Resort and its cottages and camp ground became their home for more than 3 decades. John passed away in 1995 and June continued running the resort with the help of her children until selling it in 2015. After this June stayed in Yellow Point moving just around the point to a sea side home on Yellow Point Road where she lived until her death.
But that doesn't really capture her life or who she was.
Her early upbringing from the hard days of the depression in a dirt floor cabin through the Second World War and then on to the post-war boom times in Victoria shaped her life to come. Her grandfather had been a successful haberdasher and vaudeville stage actor in London but fell on hard times and had to leave that life behind and take up homesteading in Alberta. Her mother's flamboyant nature and personality was better suited to the London stage than carving out a new life in the rural Alberta of the early 1900's and her mother's marriage to Herb turned out to be a poor match. She found herself at an early age being more mother than daughter. These early experiences might not seem auspicious but her exceptional character channeled them towards the adult she became - strong, empathetic, a great and loyal friend committed to building a stable loving home for her family and giving back to the communities she lived in.
She became very involved in advocacy for the disabled and fundraising for cerebral palsy and the G.R. Pearkes Clinic through the women's auxiliary. She was instrumental in advocating for and opening Victoria's first group home for the disabled. These were not just personal endeavours but involved the whole family exposing all of us to the importance of respect and caring for others and the knowledge that our communities reflect what we give back.
As a result we count ourselves really lucky in the parent lottery by having parents we wanted to be like and a mother who stood as an example of how to live life well.
June was able to instill in each of us often rambunctious and head strong children, a core knowledge of right and wrong, a work ethic, a sense that your word was your bond, a curiosity about the world and how it worked, and a sense of empathy for others. We may not have always met the highest standards in these areas but June gave us the knowledge we needed to know when we were falling short and the compass we needed to get back on course.
Having a mother like June (a mother that many related to as if she was their own) has been one of the greatest gifts of our lives. She almost certainly saved each of us several times with her advice, willingness to listen and creation of such warm and welcoming homes filled with love, good times, and much laughter that kept us centred and brought us much joy. These homes in Victoria and Yellow Point were the centres of our lives for holidays and countless dinner parties always including family, friends and the occasional lost soul in need of home cooking and a good 'game of chat'. The spaces in Sooke, French Creek and the boat were not only great places to get away but also a constant source of projects for the family from setting up camp to digging latrines. This was all good training for the years at Mermaid Cove where dinners with friends and family became linked to work weekends with everyone chipping in to repair cabins or the twice a year process of moving the dock.
The one constant was June's effortless ability to maintain a happy, convivial, and always interesting centre around which all of this, and us, revolved. June kept friends she remained close to for decades and made new ones as they came into her orbit. She raised her own children and 'adopted' others drawn into the warmth of her presence, her ability to listen and the wisdom of her advice.
There will be no way to replace her or fill the space she's leaving in so many people's lives but there are many people who are better for knowing her and who carry a part of her with them. To name all of these people is not possible but we'd like to mention Margaret (Muff), Eve and Bet who have known mom since she first moved to Victoria (75 years ago!) and Wendy who knew mom for 44 years was her regular Mexico vacation companion and a constant help to mom in her later years including 24/7 care to her in her last weeks (we can't thank Wendy enough). Given mom's approach to life the list could go on and on and there isn't room to mention everyone but we hope that those not listed know you are in our hearts and she loved all of you.
She leaves a large family including her grandchildren Natalie and John (Chris); Geordie, Todd, Erin, and Dylan (Pam); Thomas and Michael (Greg), Mia, Jasmine, Michaela, Chantel, and Dalan (Graham). Her great grandchildren Owen, Austin, Faith, Bella, Vienna, Gage, Tyler, and Ollie. Our partners Victoria Stevenson, Murray Ahl, Frieda Oemitzsch, Debra Buvyer.
June sometimes joked that she didn't want an obituary because the ones she read always made her feel that her life was not interesting enough to warrant the telling. We all strongly disagree. A life of 90 years filled with kindness, warmth and laughter, a tremendous legacy of community giving, a large group of friends each with their own stories of what she gave them, a lifelong love for this Island to which she contributed businesses and community services, and four children lucky to have had her guidance and grateful for the many things she gave. A full life well lived leaving the people she touched richer for knowing her is as much as any of us can hope.
Travel well mom.
A date and place for a celebration of June's life will be set as soon we find a large enough venue!
