Notes
General:
Her sister was married to one of the Ayres. This may have been the connection through which the adoption of baby Gertrude Louise was arranged.

041118:

The above information came for Harcourt (Buzz) Gardiner's family tree of his wife Gertrude Louise Mews, referred to above. Here, from his contributed Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch.com is more on this topic:

"Her sister was married to one of the Ayres. This may have been the connection through which the adoption of baby Gertrude Louise was arranged.

I believe Gert's adoption was arranged. Violet was a young girl, working in Bertha's home, pregnant and Harold was the father. Bertha's sister was married to the Ayre of Ayre and sons. Leonard [Mews -- i.e. Gertrude's adopted father] was a trusted employee who had just married and according to rumour his wife had just miscarried. Len was promoted and given 50,000 in Ayre shares just at this time.

The Tessiers, including Harold's brothers, seemed to take an interest in her as a young married woman. Harold knew exactly where to find her and had been following her career. It looks like a private adoption was arranged and probably through Bertha and her sister. This family was
renouned for its good works."

Bertha was the youngest daughter of the Hon. James Rogerson, Receive r General, Nfld. She died at the age of 90.

It is unclear how his mother's surname and his are the same. The identity of her husband is unknown and it is possible that they never married.

Note that it is more than likely that the birth transcription found on FMP is in reality the date of the baptism as this is a church record and they normally include the date of baptism and only secondarily the birth date in some instances.

NB: The 1841, 1851 and 1861 Censuses that I have found for David Rogerson may not be this man. The stated age on these is not in conformance with the birth records. But that is not unusual on Census forms.

She was originally to be left $1000 in the will of Elizabeth Gillard. Their relationship is unclear. Cyril G. Tessier was also bequeathed $1000 as was Emma's niece, daughter of her brother William. But later the bequest to Emma was revoked while the other two were retained. The reason for the change of heart is also unknown.

Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.
We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
