It is amazing that a "1/6th of 1/8th" share of this estate is even worth anything but this gives some idea of its vast extent.

171012: A "C. Le Messurier" signed a petition against confederation with Canada in 1866 according to story in Newfoundland Ancestor this month by Lynn Fogwill. I suspect that this is a mistake and that it was Henry C. Le Messurier, as his son Charles would have only been 16 at the time and the others on the list were well established merchants and leaders in the community.

From the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador you will find; "LEMESSURIER. HENRY W. (1848-1931). Civil servant, politician, author. Born St. John's, son of Henry C. and Sarah E. LeMessurier. Educated General Protestant Academy, St. John's. Married Elizabeth Arnott. Despite a career in the civil service spanning some 60 years, LeMessurier is perhaps best remembered for his song '"The Ryans and the Pittmans." Beginning his career as a clerk with the garrison commissariat in 1865, LeMessurier went into business in 1870. Following the departure of British troops from Newfoundland. He was appointed justice of the peace for the southern district of Newfoundland in 1879. In 1885 he successfully contested the district of Burin as a supporter of the Reform party led by Robert Thorburn. Unsuccessful in his bid for re-election in 1889. LeMessurier began editing the Evening Herald and when unsuccessful at the polls a second time he accepted an appointment to the Customs Department. As deputy minister of that department in 1898, he oversaw the reorganization of the customs service, coordinating it with Reid Newfoundland Company's railway and steamship system. He remained deputy minister until his retirement in 1928. LeMessurier was a prolific writer, a well-known lecturer on historical topics and a frequent contributor to the Newfoundland Quarterly. He played a leading role in the introduction of curling to Newfoundland and for many years was president of the St. John's Curling association. In 1916 LeMessurier was created C.M.G. 091211: Bert Riggs confirmed the parentage in question in an article in the Telegram which was found on the Kirby family website. 300513 from the Dictionary of Newfoundland and Labrador Biography:

LEMESSURIER, HENRY W. (1848-1931). b St. John's 19 Aug; MHA Burin 1885-89; editor Evening Herald 1890-92; deputy minister of Customs 1898-1928; CMC 1916; d St. John's 27 May. Lemessurier began his working life as a clerk with the Commissariat 1865-70, then went into business. In 1885 he was elected to the House of Assembly as a supporter of Robert Thorburn and the Reform party. Defeated in a bid for re-election in 1889, Lemessurier became editor of the Evening Herald for a time before entering the Customs Department in 1894, when his political allies returned to power under Augustus F. Goodridge. When the civil service was reorganized in 1898 Lemessurier became deputy minister of Customs. Despite his long career in the civil service Lemessurier is probably best known as author of the popular song "The Ryans and the Pittmans". He was also a frequent contributor to the Newfoundland Quarterly on historical subjects and was one of those who introduced the game of curling to Newfoundland, serving as president of the Curling Association for many years. LeMESSURIER, Esq., C.M.G., who on February 12th, 1872 was married at St.
Thomas's Church, to Miss Elizabeth ARNOTT, by the late Rev. Thomas M. WOOD,
Rector.
It has been written in another connection:-
"Wedlock, indeed, hath oft compared been
To public feasts, where meets a public rout,
Where they that are without would fain go in,

And they that are within would fain go out."

Rather may it be said with Dryden, as referring to to-morrow anniversary: -
"Our souls sit close and silently within;
And their own web form their own entrails spin;
And when eye meet far off, our sense is such.
That spider-like we feel the tenderest touch."

All down through the years Mr. and Mrs. LeMESSURIER have been prominently
associated with the various activities of the old Church and are to-day
amongst its most regular attendants and supporters. For thirty years Mr.
LeMESSURIER was Superintendent of the Parish Church Sunday School. He has
also contributed much valued service in the Synod and divergent enterprise
of the diocese.
Few citizens have rendered better public service with pen that the respected
Assistant Collector of Customs. Whether from the editorial chair, or as a
private contributer, his writings have always borne the stamp of rich
diction, forceful expression and clean cut argument; while his store of
accurate general information has invariable border on the phenomenal.
For the past twenty years Mr. LeMESSURIER has acceptably occupied the office
of Assistance Collector, a position that carried with it the duty of
interpreting and applying the intricacies of our Customs Laws. In this
arduous work, his intelligent grasp of colonial business, based upon long
experience, and coupled with remarkable industry, has enabled him to measure
up to the requirements of his office with consummate skill and satisfaction.
Socially, his activities date back very many years. From the early days of
the old "Acadenia," and indeed long before, no club entertainment has been
complete without "Harry" LeMESSURIER; his services in ministrelsy, as in
other histronic avenues, being always sought and willingly rendered. As a
companion he will always be remembered for his cheerful and kindly
disposition and a readiness to assist any who needed his help.
Of the children remaining, there are four, all married and removed from the
home circle. Mrs. Field JONES is at present in the Kenya Colony, British
East Africa; Arthur is in Chicago; Hugh (a war veteran) now occupies as
important commercial post in Brazil, the fourth being wife of paymaster
Commander NIND of H.M.S. Briton, at present resident in St. John's.
And now, after half a century of wedded life, this devoted couple are
nearing the sunset period, yet both are in the enjoyment of health and
surprising vigor. It will be the fond wish of hosts of friends, as
congratulations are being offered to-morrow, and that the remaining journey
to the end may continue many years, and that the experiences and happiness
of a wedded life so long extended, may be their comfort and support always.
In there congratulations the NEWS joins most cordially.

131015:
In "Essays on the Great War", a special edition of the Journal "Newfoundland and Labrador Studies" published by Memorial University, one article written by Chris Martin entitled "The Right Course, the Best Course, the Only Course" on the subject of recruitment to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment mentions on page 204 how different branches of the government of the then Dominion of Newfoundland were co-opted into this aspect of the war effort:

"The Nomninating Committee [of the Patriot Association of Newfoundland, the non-governmental body given initial responsibility for fielding the regiment] wrote to the magistrates of all 18 electorial districts compelling them to form branch offices of the Patriotic Association, to hold public meetings to explain the country's objective, and to compile and send forward the names of willing citizens. Bennett [the Prime Minister at the time] sent copies of the proclamation to Inspector General John Sullivan of the Newfoundland Constabulary, and 100 copies to H. W. LeMessurier, Assistant Collector, requesting them to have their respective constables and sub-collectors to post the notices in prominent places outside the sity."

This is the only reference I have found to the role that H. W. Le Messurier personally played in the WWI war effort. Oddly, his son, Capt. Hugh Arnott LeMessurier, chose to serve in a British regiment rather than the RNR, seemingly displaying a loyalty first and foremost to Britain rather than Newfoundland, their home for the previous four generations. Also, considering that their origins were in the Channel Islands, it is a bit odd that H. A. LeMessurier should have chosen to serve in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

From the website of Claude Bιlanger at Marianopolis University which focuses on Newfoundland:

"Le Messurier, Henry William (1848-1931), civil servant, was born in 1848, the son of H. C. Le Messurier of St. John's, Newfoundland. He was editor of the Evening Herald from 1889-92, then entered the civil service, and in 1898 became deputy minister of customs. He served on a great many local committees and boards, and contributed historical articles to the local press. He died on May 27, 1931. In 1872 he married Elizabeth Arnott, by whom he had two sons and two daughters."

Bio by Edward Roberts in appendix to Peter Cashin's memoir "My Fight for Newfoundland"

LeMessurier, Henry W. (1848-1931)
LeMessurier, a Conservative businessman and a supporter of Robert
Thorburn, was elected to the House of Assembly as one of the two
Members for Burin in 1885 but was unsuccessfull in his re-election bids
in 1889 and 1893. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Customs in 1898
and served there until his retirement in 1928. He was appointed CMG in
1915. He is perhaps best known as author ofthe lyrics to the well-known
Newfoundland folk song "The Ryans and the Pittmans.''
Michael Cashin, PJC's son, recalls that his father told him that
LeMessurier told him about the false Minutes of the Executive Council which
were the immediate cause of PJC's resignation from the Squires Cabinet on
1 February 1932. W.J. Browne, in Eighty-four Years a Newfoundlander, says
that the fake Minutes of Council were dated between November 1929 and
December 1931 (193).

200916:
He is also mentioned in Bernard D. Fardy's book "Before Beaumont Hamel - The Royal Newfoundland Regiment 1775-1815". He points out the pivotal role of Le Messurier as President of the Newfoundland Historical Society in repatriating the colours of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment which had been taken to Jersey by Major Pipon, the commanding officer of the Regiment at the close of the War of 1812. They remained in the family until presented to St. Brelade's Church in 1888 and then were spotted there by Newfoundland tourists after WWI. Le Messurier and H. F. Shortis were able to persuade the government of Jersey to return the colours to Newfoundland and a plaque commemorating their presence in Jersey for 100 years was placed in St. Brelade's Church.

Cyril Vincent Le Mesurier's son C.R. (Craig) Le Messurier prepared a family history and tree sometime in the 1980s which is on file at The Rooms as MG 929.120 among the family history series. I had seen it before this year and even photographed several pages previously but wound up doing the same thing again this year because the information had not been recorded in my family tree the last time I did so. I intend to make sure that this is rectified now.

Here is part of what Craig had to say about this family:

Herbert Long Lived and Died in Montrιal, Quιbec. He had six children Noel, Eric, Howard, Joyce, Stan and Douglas. Stan and Douglas were twins. It is known that Noel and Eric worked for Canadian National.
