260606:

Enid O'Brien has helped sort out an error concerning the parentage of Archibald LeMessurier that crept into my Family Tree Maker file by being copied over from that of Clive Lemesurier. It now seems there were two Archibald LeMessuriers: one the son of Peter Frederick and Emma Long, born, raised and died in Newfoundland; and another, probably the son of Peter Frederick's older brother William. This second Archibald (whose second name was evidently Francis according to Clive's notes) was born, lived and died in Québec. Clive has him incorrectly reported as the son of Peter Frederick and Emma Long. All the other facts he has on Archibald Frederick (dates, locations, names of children) are probably correct, including the name of his spouse (Annie Brown).

Email from Enid:

I think the above is sufficient evidence to prove that Archibald LeMessurier (son Peter Fred LeMessurier/Emma Long) was married to IsabelleHerald.

I would suggest that there are two Archibald LeMessuriers and that they are both grandsons of Mary Morry/Peter Paint LeMessurier. Mary Morry/Peter Paint LeMessurier's eldest son, William Morry LeMessurier was also living in Montreal. He was a Commission Merchant for the firmCunningham and LeMessurier in Montreal where he died in June 1926 at the age 81 years. I have no record of his marriage and whether or nothe had children but I suspect he may have married and the second Archibald might be his child. He most likely married Annie Brown.

I hope this is of some help in sorting things out.

Thanks for the birth day of Gus Casey.

With kind regards.

Enid

Cyril Vincent Le Mesurier's son C.R. (Craig) Le Messurier prepared a family history and tree sometime in the 1980s which is on file at The Rooms as MG 929.120 among the family history series. I had seen it before this year and even photographed several pages previously but wound up doing the same thing again this year because the information had not been recorded in my family tree the last time I did so. I intend to make sure that this is rectified now.

Here is part of what Craig had to say about this family:

Archibald was born in 1880. He had two children, Cyril and Alma. He was an accountant for W. & G. Rendell. He then worked as an accountant for Knowlings Ltd. and finally for the Newfoundland Board of Liquor Control..

Hello there !

What a wonderful site you have, I have enjoyed it very much. As I wasreading through the site and recognizing many of my families names, Icame upon an ommision that I have noticed on the site as well as other Le Mesurier family sites. and that ommision is my grandmother .

Under the Le Messurier part of the family there is an Archibald Francis Le Messurier (b. 1880, d.1958) He was married to Annie Brown. You have listed as their children Francis Le Messurier and Sydney Peter Le Messurier. The missing piece is my grandmother Dollie Ann Le Messurier their sister.

My grandmother was born in 1910 in Barachois Quebec where the family resided with many other Le Messuriers. She died on December 23, 2002 in Orillia Ontario.

She was married to Rueben Hotton and they had two children , my father Lorne Hotton and my aunt Buelah Hotton ( her married name is Dennison now)

Lorne Hotton married Georgian Polywkan and they had me Donna Hotton (Izzard) I have no other siblings

Beulah married Gary Dennison and had two sons Gregory and Stephen , they live in Kitchener Ontario.

Anyway, I just thought I would fill in that missing piece, let me know if you want any more details, such as birthdates or other things. Ihave photos also of Annie Brown and Archibald Le Mesurier and many other family members.

I really enjoyed your site

Yours truly , Donna Izzard

On the basis of the above I have concluded that there are two Archibald LeMessuriers, one who was born, lived and died in Newfoundland and one who was born, lived and died on the mainland (Québec and Ontario) and that they are probably not related to one another. I have detachedthe information pertaining to the Québec born Archibald as a separatefamily line for now and added all the details that Donna Izzard has given me on that family line (see below).

Hello Chris

My goodness.. I cannot imagine how you keep all those names straight, as a total newcomer to all this I take my hat off to you ! Many yearsago my Grandmother Dollie lived with us for a few years and I always felt that I should get the most family info from her as possible. I remember we sat down one day outside on the porch and I picked the dear womans brain for hours , writing down as much as possible.

I am not quite sure about the spelling of names however, some of themI just wrote as she sounded them out. Her fathers name was of course Archibald Francis LeMesurier, he was a fisherman in summer and lumberman in winter. She could not remember the year he was born but that he was born on December 1 in Barachois Quebec, and was Anglican. I will add that most of the family seems to have been affiliated with St Peters Anglican Church in either Malbais or Barachois. I have his death notice and it says he is buried in Barachois Dec 14th 1958. I am assuming at St Peters.

He married Anne Brown , born November 8th 1881 (Barachois) and died Jan 3 1978 in Toronto , but if I remember correctly they sent her body back home to Barachois as well.

Going further back, she said Archibalds fathers name was John LeMesurier and she believed he was also born in Barachois but didnt know for sure. He was a fisherman, she said he had one brother for sure named Ezibald who everyone called Zoz.John married Elizabeth Vibert who she said was from Malbais. Barachois and Malbais are very close to each other. They had at least 7 children that she could remember. Archibald, John, George, Edward, Elizabeth, Jane and Clara. I also have some names of who those children married if you need it. One interesting thing, Archibald and his brother George married Anne and Jane Brown on the same day, two sisters.

She also mentioned that John LeMesurier had a sister Martha and a brother Philip. She thought that Martha married Tom Boucher and had two children Edmond and Calford, and Philip married a women who she thoughthad the surname of Hudgins, and they had three children Albert , Bernard and Edith. But I will say she had a great deal of problem remembering at this point so the names may not be correct.

As far as Anne Brown .. her parents were Thomas Brown and Celima ( Celema? ) Brown , I believe her maiden name was Henley. I am not sure the correct spelling but it was pronounced Cell e may. They had five children, Anne ( my great grandmother ) Thomas, Marie, Mary and Jane. When Thomas Brown died apparently Celema remarried to John LeMesuriers brother Ezibald that I mentioned earlier(Zoz) . I have a few other names on Anne Browns side if you need it.

Well.. that is the extent of the information I have, except to say that my grandmother said our decendents came from the Channel Islands but I was never quite sure if she meant from her side or my grandfatherReuben Hotton . Somewhere I have a picture of Anne Brown and Archibald , I will try to find it and send it to you.

Thank you for sparking my interest in my family history again, it needed a little jump start.

Yours truly Donna Izzard

Donna

The fact that his remains were returned to Newfoundland for burial is significant. It suggests he had aquired some wealth in his lifetime since this would have been an expensive undertaking, or else his children remaining in Newfoundland paid the costs. He was, after all, not from there.
