Kevin Reddigan explains why James had to declare insolvency and his brother John William had to give up his premises:

"It would appear that James had tried to establish himself as a merchant?, and like many during the latter part of that decade, his enterprise failed. (It appears the same thing happened to John William Saunders who was established at Fermeuse but then he had to sign over his fishing rooms at Rumney's Cove to: Carter, Samuel and Co.)"

Email from Kevin Reddigan dated 8 May 2020:

I have stumbled across some more information for James Henry Saunders, son of Peter Saunders, grandson of William Saunders. These three were all ship carpenters/shipwrights. I thought that I had found most of James Henry's family details but I discovered that he likely had at least two more children than I found in the online church records, which end in 1899. I twigged to this individual's 'full' story when I stumbled across a James Henry Saunders from Newfoundland who enlisted in the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Forces (CEF) in Truro, Nova Scotia in 1916. When I checked James Henry (of Peter), I figured he would be 51, so he would likely not have been eligible to enlist so I initially dismissed this reference. Then I remembered a marker in Belvedere Cemetery for a CEF veteran. Sure enough, after a little more research, it all came together. It appears James Henry Saunders became 6 or 7 years younger when he enlisted. However, my findings show that he was born in 1865, not 1871 - just a little white lie of 6 years??

James Henry Saunders and Mary Coady had 8 or 9 children. At least four of them died as children, and Mary died, during child birth, when they were all quite young. James' service records indicated that he had four boys in Mt. Cashel Orphanage in 1916. He was forwarding his army pay to support them. He went overseas, but just over a year later, he was dismissed as being medically unfit for duty and sent home. His commemorative war service stone in Belvedere Cemetery says he was born in 1864 and didn't die until 1968??. However, he actually died in 1950, per his CEF service records, and per another headstone at Belvedere which also includes his son Nicholas (the second) and daughter-in-law Helen.
