Jun. 13, 1889, son of Alfred and (Fanny James?) White.

It appears he may have been born prior to his parents' marriage, which did not take place until the 27th of January 1890 according to the marriage record on the NGB website. This may be why his name did not appear on the list of children I received from Richard and Roberta Sullivan years ago.

101213:

In the NGB transcript of Ferryland Baptisms it shows Alfred White's parents as Alfred White and Mary Ellen White. It is possible tha the transcript is erroneous. It is also possible that the mother was indeed someone named Mary Ellen White and that she and Alfred White were not married. The very next entry in the alphabetical listing of baptisms is that of John Stanislaus White, and he is shown as being the son of Alfred White and Fanny James as expected. At this time I am going to continue to show Fanny James as the mother of Alfred Jr., but am reserving judgement as to who the real mother may have been until I have better information.

I mistakenly took the above to mean that Alfred moved to the States. In reality he died in Ferryland and his family moved to the states. See email below from his grandson Cal White of Bridgewater, Massachusetts:

Hi Chris I have been going over all the material you have sent to Roberta and myself. Your father sure is a wealth of information ! I got very little from Bill, I'm not sure he knew who I was. He said he would be on line shortly and I hope I get a chance to talk with him some more.

To ans. some of your questions, Nana White was my grandmother, Alfred's wife, also known as Fanny; My gandfather died in Ferryland, I think it was 1920, my father and Aunt Lulu [Louise] came to this country prior to that, they then brought Nana, Bill, and Gordon to the states. My father married Mary Mulrooney in 1923 and died in 1926

You say the family had some money, but I have found there was a mortgage on the Ferryland house that was never paid off and I was given to understand that the bank had forclosed and sold off some of the furniture, plus gave the land back to the state? Does that make any sense to you? I couldn't figure out why they put a park on top of land

Yes we are still in Bridgewater, and I will try to give you some dates-- Alfred 1849-1920; Fanny 1865-1950; Bill 1890- abt 1960; Gordon 1893-abt 1970; Lulu 1894- abt 1968; Aunt Lulu married Arthur Reough, Gloria was their daughter, she is still living and living inMalden Ma.- no dates for them - Mary Roach Mulrooney was my mother, from Red Island born 1896, died 1989, My mother married John White, then after his death she married James Roach and we moved to Canton Ma. I'm getting tired so I will get back to you later - see what else you can find out from your father O.K. see ya Cal

He was the youngest son of John William White. He leaves a wife Frances (Fanny), three sons John, William, and Gordon, and one daughter Louise (later known as Lulu)"

"Alfred's family moved from Ferryland in the 1920's.....left the food on the table and went to Massachusetts." Fanny was still in Ferryland in 1921 and Alfred already dead I believe that only son John and his sister Lulu were first to move to Massachusetts. Lulu & John's brothers Will & Gordon went to USA at a later time as did their mother Fanny. Dau Lulu was in Lawrence when she died in 1960. She had married a Reough and had a dau Gloria. In 1978 we met Calvin White, son of John & Mary (Mullrooney), he lived in Bridgewater Ma. We sent him some family tree stuff but he never responded. We recently reconnected with him and he has been to NF and is very interested in family history. Alfred's house was torn down in Ferryland and a Government monument and park was made. It is noteworthy the the application for probate submitted by son Alfred does not contain the same list of living siblings as I had mainly from Roberta Sullivan. I suspect that Roberta may have made some assumptions concerning the extra named members of the family based largely upon their common surname. This will require more research to set straight since Roberta is now deceased and no one is carrying on her Sullivan research.

111213:

I could not recall where I got the information on Anne O'Driscoll White becoming a nun. When I read about her in Laura Morry William' book Over The Fence and she made no mention of her becoming a nun I was left wondering if I had made a mistake in the past in recording this as a fact. So I enlisted the support of my usual authoritative source, Enid O'Brien. This is what she told me:

From: Enid O'Brien [mailto:enidobrien@yahoo.com]
Sent: December 11, 2013 9:45 AM
To: Chris Morry
Subject: Re: Fact checking

Hi Chris,

The only thing I have on Ann O'Driscoll was that she was baptised 6/9/1874 (FD Records) to Henry White/ Margaret O'Driscoll, sps. Alfred White/Elizabeth Forristall.

What I have from folklore is that she joined the convent and was known in religious life as Rev. Sister Mary Bernard and was stationed at Witless Bay. (I am not sure if Witless Bay Convent is run by Mercy or Presentation order). The story goes that the Mother Superior of the Convent was an alcoholic and drank the altar wine. When this happened she sometimes locked the younger Sisters out of the convent. After one such event Annie was locked out and came down with a cold which turned in to pneumonia and progessed to TB. She died from complications of the disease.

I haven't tried to confirm the folklore.

Christmas is progressing favourably although Barry and his girlfriend will be the only two here.

Talk to you later.

Enid

I am therefore still no closer to having a definitive source for this belief. In fact, on the Newfoundland's Grand Banks website they give burial information on all Presentation and Mercy sisters and, though there are a number of Sister Mary Bernards, none of them bore the birth name of White. I am inclined to believe the story may be apocryphal but will retain her status as a nun for now pending further information coming forward.

131213:

Now I have my answer from two sources. Enid's original source was Ida White Michael and in a message relayed to me by our mutual friend and distant relation, Jean Carter Fox Strirling, here is what she had to say about it:

"Her [Ida's] Grandfather Mike White and her Uncle Ronald between them told her that Annie joined the Convent at Witless Bay (Presentation) that she was called Sister Bernard, that she died there and is buried (though neither of her informants ever visited the grave) behind that convent where there is an old cemetery.

All the rest you mentioned she thinks is hearsay that has by now become folklore, and none had any facts to back it all up as far as she knows."

Also, Larry Dohey at The Rooms used to be the archivist at the RC Cathedral and had a friend who keeps the records for the Presentation Order (Wanita Bates). This is what she had to say on the matter:

"Josephine (White) Williams and Mother M. Bernard White were the daughters of Henry White (Ferryland) and Margaret O'Driscoll. Mother M. Bernard White entered Religious Life on February 2, 1890, received on October 15, 1890 (age 16 Years) and professed on October 11, 1892 in the Chapel at Holy Trinity Convent by Bishop Thomas Power D.D (relatives of Reverend P. & Stephen O'Driscoll). There is no record that Josephine White entered the Presentation Congregation. Hearsay among relatives states that she did enter, but left after three days. As Josephine was neither received or professed in the Congregation, I can understand why she isn't recorded in our Annals."

070914:

I am not convinced that I have gotten to the bottom of this as the stories are not complementary. In fact they are contradictory. And in addition, references to Mother Bernard in Witless Bay online refer to her as O'Donnell, not White. There is a Sister Bernard White buried in the same cemetery with Mother Bernard O'Donnell and I'm 99% sure this is our person so I am making the appropriate corrections today and "demoting" her from "Mother" to "Sister".

Annie is 22 and unmarried at the time of census. The next name on the list of those present at the time of census is an infant boy named Michael Ryan, who is listed as a grandson of Micheal and Margaret. I have made the assumption that this is Annie's illegitimate son since there are no married daughters listed. But it could just be that the grandparents were taking care of this child for their eldest daughter Ellen who does not appear on the census and must have been living elsewhere and quite possibly married to someone named Ryan.

It is interesting that one of the witnesses to her burial was named Douglas Morry. There are only two known persons of this name, a son of John Henry Morry of Ferryland, who would be too young to have been there, and Douglas Windsor Morry of Victoria, the son of William George Morry and Anna Jennings Windsor. He was of the right age to have participated but it is hard to believe he would have travelled all the way from BC to do so. They were just not that closely related. In fact, there was no blood relationship between them.
