211009: From The Deanery of Totnes CD TYRIE JAMES KIRTON 17 04 1824 GRAHAM SOPHIA

Notes
General:
211009: At this time I have no idea to which of the several inter-related Graham families in Dartmouth she belongs.

170818:

I have added her to the family of Francis Graham because she would be of the right age and ne of those at her marriage was Hannah Graham, probably the wife of Thomas Francis Graham, implying he might be her brother.

060725:

In the will of Elizabeth [Graham] Ellis, Sophia is named as Sophia Newgent, wife of Thomas Anderson of South Shields. I am not clear on whether the "Newgent" referred to a previous married name or was a part of her birth name but, if the latter, I have never seen it spelled out this way anywhere else.

Notes
General:
There is some doubt concerning this person and the Thomas Graham born in 1791 as to which one married Julia Masters. I have severed that marriage from this person since the dates are not logical if you accept the dates in Laurence Furneaux's family tree.

050811:

There is a very scant record in the register of the independent parish in Dartmouth which I found at the MHA in St. John's. I believe the transcript made by Keith Matthews may be abbreviated and there may be more details in the original. What Keith has transcribed is as follows:

Baptism: 1761 (I'm going on the date of the person above as this space shows "AT" in the transcript) Surname: Graham Christian Name: Thos Father/Mother: Chris

That's all there is. It seems likely that this refers to Thomas Graham, brother of Mary.

I think the children would have been christened in the "dissenter" church because, being of Scottish ancestry, the family was most likely Presbyterian to begin with and would have preferred not to attend one of the Anglican parishes in town.

• Occupation: Seaman on the RESOLUTION, Peter asnd Jacob Winser, Master and Mate, 1815-1816, Dartmouth, Devon, England. The vessel sailed from Dartmouth and returned there from Newfoundland but had visited Miramichi in the meantime. This is unusual. It must have been involved in transporting goods rather than in fishing.

Note the discrepancy in occupation. A corwainer was essentially a shoemaker and repairer, nothing to do with being a mariner, one might think. But in fact, almost all vessels carried a cordwainer on board to carry out the mending of materials needed for the crew, especially in regard to the fishery.

210108: There is a note in the church register that reads: "Erased & altered by me John Tracey vicar in accordance with the statement contained in the annexed affidavit April 9th, 1855"

I have no idea why this was done since the addidavit was not reproduced in the little booklet of Baptisms from St. Saviours prepared by theDevon Family History Society.
