What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date. Also no way of knowing whether the christening took place at St. Phillip's in Aquaforte or St. Luke's in Ferryland as this information was not recorded on the register at Petty Harbour.

Neither John Heath Graham nor his sister Mary Graham were mentioned in the will of their aunt, Elizabeth [Graham] Ellis even though their brother and two sisters were mentioned. This suggests that they were probably deceased in 1844 when the will was probated.

1/11/99 In an email from Enid O'Brien: "Re: Howard Morry (your grandfather). I did know from some people from Ferryland that he tended to colour things a little bit but I always try to confirm information anyway. I not only heard from him that there were 20 children but Helena (Morry) LeMessurier who was born in the 1800s also states that there were a lot of children. I note thatyou state your aunt Jean felt that there were probably more children. I, personally, feel that we do not have all the children of Mary Graham/Matthew Morry for the following reasons. I don't think anyone born in the 1800s would consider 5 children as being a large family (in fact I think it would be considered small). Also, when you look at the children, they were married in 1773 and we don't have a baptism until 1783 (10 years). This doesn't add up. My own gut feeling about this is their other children were probably born in the Channel islands as Matthew had a banking business there and it would make sense to me that they might have lived there. I didn't check the Channel island records, do you know if your Aunt Jean researched them [No]?

Helena (Morry) LeMessurier stated that Matthew had a business in the Channel islands with W. Prideaux. I can confirm that he did have a business with Prideaux as it was stated in a Power of Attorney he signed for his son, Matthew, Jr., to do business in Ferryland on his behalf. Also, you would notice that a number of Morrys married LeMessuriers. The LeMessuriers were from the Channel Island and they were probably familiar with each other families for some time. I don't feel that they had children adopted I just feel we didn't find them all."

Note that both signed - hence were literate. Also note that Christopher Graham was Mary's brother while Richard Pillar was evidently a business partner of Matthew along with his brother John, as all three act as witnesses of various mariners at the church.

Mary Graham of Claverhouse.

I had initially put down the cause of her death as "died in childbirth" because that is what appears in Geoffrey William's Morey database. Only I then discovered that he had gotten this "information" from Lanny Morry, who was only speculating (there is no record of this anywhere). The Morey database uses Lanny's exact words, obviously cut from her email of Dec. 10, 2000.

This is an example of how your own information, or misinformation, can come back to haunt you!

311006: I viewed her gravestone in Dartmouth recently (St. Saviours). Unfortunately it is broken in two and a piece is missing but the full inscription was taken down some time prior to the second world war by a Mrs. Grey (Jane Josephine Morry) who died childless in 1937 at an advanced age according to Nimshi Crewe. It read:

"Sacred to the memory of Mary Morry the wife of Matthew Morry, Merchant of this town who was the sincere Christian, the faithful wife, the affectionate mother, and the true friend universally loved and sincerely lamented, who departed this life on 29 October 1796. Aged 46 Years. Also sacred to the memory of Priscilla, daughter of the above named Matthew and Mary Morry, and wife of Wm. Sweetland of Ferryland in the island of Newfoundland, now of Dartmouth, Merchant, who no less virtuous and esteemed departed this life on the 19 day of December 1820. Aged 37 years."

GPS location: 50*21'4.9"N 3*34'44.4"W

051206 email from Enid O'Brien gives further details on Mrs. Grey's efforts: "My full info I have on Mrs. Grey/Gray's visit is as follows and it was written by N. Crewe and it is as follows:

Tombstones in Dartmouth by Mrs. Gray who died at St. John's 1937 at advanced age - no children:

Mary Morry, wife of Matthew Morry (merchant) of this town, died 1796,age 46 (My note: It is interesting that the headstone says "of this town" meaning Dartmouth which would seem to indicate that his main residence was in Dartmouth in 1796)

Priscilla of the above Matthew Morry and Mary Morry and wife of William Sweetland of Ferryland, Isle of Newfoundland, but now of Dartmouth (merchant) who is no less esteemed departed this life 19th day December 1820, age 37 years.

Priscilla, wife of Thomas Silly died 1847 age 28 years; also, Benjamin Sweetland, her brother, who with wife and child were lost at sea Sept 1846, age 32 years.

Also, Matthew Morry Sweetland, died at sea July 1852, age 39 years

Also, Mary Morry Sweetland who died 1854, age 33 years.

William Oxenham died 1805, age 75 years Also Mary, his daughter died 1832, age 76 years. Also Thomasine Dunstervill, the wife of James H. Carter died 1835, age 40 years.

I always thought that the Mrs Gray referred to was Jane Josephine Morry especiallly because it said she had no children. Now I am not so sure. I don't have a date of death for this Mrs Gray but when her husband died in 1942 it said he left a wife and no children so this would rule-out Jane Josephine or the date 1937. Who else could it be?

290908:

A transcript of a record in a bible believed to have been given to Jean Morry Funkhouser by Howard Morry. The entries appear to be transcribed from family-related gravestones but the hand is not that of Howard Morry so it is unclear who wrote these records (possibly this is the mysterious Mrs. Grey, Nimshi Crewe's informant):

050811:

There is a very scant record in the register of the independent parish in Dartmouth which I found at the MHA in St. John's. I believe the transcript made by Keith Matthews may be abbreviated and there may be more details in the original. What Keith has transcribed is as follows:

Baptism: 1750 (I'm going on the date of the person above as this space is left blank in the transcript) Surname: Graham Christian Name: D (short for daughter) Father/Mother: Chris

That's all there is. It seems likely that this refers to Mary Graham, wife of Matthew Morry.

I think the children would have been christened in the "dissenter" church because, being of Scottish ancestry, the family was most likely Presbyterian to begin with and would have preferred not to attend one of the Anglican parishes in town.

130217:
The Dartmouth Family History Group did a database of all legible gravestones in the St. Saviour's churchyard some years ago and missed the grave of Mary and Priscilla presumably because the large missing piece of the stone prevented them from making a reasonable effort at reading what it had said. Therefore their map does not record where this stone is to be found. Strangely their database also does not indicate the location of the Graham's stones which are adjacent and should have been legible. I have taken their map and annotated it (in the Media Gallery) to indicate the approximate location of these stones. The fact that they did not find any other Morry or Graham stones is troubling and probably means they too have been destroyed or weathered beyond recognition over the years.

310717:
I found out this year during my visit to St. Saviour's that the damage to her tombstone was inflicted by a stray German bomb which landed nearby during WWII. Many stones were lost at that time and the church itself was severely damaged. They do not have the missing piece of the stone and it was likely used as fill when they rebuilt the grounds. I also learned from reading information on the churchyard in Ray Freeman's book, Dartmouth and Its Neighbours, that many of the original gravestones were lost by successive intrusions when the roads surrounding the church were built and widened. This could account for the absence of other gravestones of the Morry family.

It isn't clear if she is the one shown as part of Christopher Graham's household in the 1841 census because I would have thought that she would have been more than 20 at that time. But without other evidence to the contrary, l am saying this is she. She is mentioned as the sister of John Graham in his will dated 1848 or thereabouts but he was born in 1806 so quite a gap in ages.
