Also, Enid O'Brien added this to a discussion taking place amongst a group of us including her, Kevin Reddigan and Jean Carter Stirling:
" would just like to put my two cents worth in regarding the death and birth of Esther Graham Morry. Like you I do believe her date of death is 25th November 1849. This is on the headstone in Dr. Pocius file, he has also written it in the caption of the headstone in his book. Family search gives her Date of Birth as April 7th, 1837. As the headstone says she died on 25th November 1849 at age 12 years, 8 months this would confirm the date of birth. There is also an obit in the Harbour Grace Standard on November 29/1849 saying 'At Caplin Bay, Esther Graham Morry, youngest daughter of Matthew Morry Esq, Caplin Bay, age 13 years"
I think the answer to the delay in her burial to December 2, 1849 is that she didn't die in Caplin Bay. It seems by the entry in Robert Carter's Diary she died in St. John's and since the headstone is in Calvert the body would have to be shipped there. Re: Carter's Diary " Monday, 26th November 1849. An account of Esther, the daughter of Mr. Morry or Caplin Bay reached this evening from St. John's, she died yesterday. Eliza went to Caplin Bay by request and stayed". This would confirm another source for her date of death and would also confirm that she was away from home when she died, hence, the delay in the burial.
With kind regards.
Enid"

According to notes by Roberta Sullivan (Newfoundland Geological Society) her headstone in the Ferryland Anglican Cemetery reads:
"Esther Graham, daughter of Matthew and Ann Morry, died [actually says "departed this life"] 25 November 1849 aged 12 years 8 months"
Corrected earlier date of death to be date of burial based on this information. Note spelling (Ann) of her mother's name which is variously spelled with an "e" in some records. Also in the NLGS records transcribed from gravestones in 1990 they incorrectly give the date of death as 25 November 1819.
April 5, 2004: Church of England Ferryland Burial Record on Newfoundland's Grand Banks website: December 2, 1849Morry, Esther Graham Caplin Bay 13 H. H. Hamilton
130813: Note that the date of Christening on 30 Sept 1838 is taken from an old transcription of the LDS microfilm that is known to contain errors. For example, they give the father's name as "Jonathan Morry". It may well be that the date in 1837 is more credible but I have no source for it and therefore cannot accept it as Preferred.

291215:
Today I am merging another Esther Morry with this one. The girl in question was supposed to be the daughter of Thomas Morry according to Gert Crosbie's records, which is the only reference to Thomas Graham Morry ever having a daughter by this name. While it was possible that she existed, since church records were spotty in those days, I have come to the conclusion that either Gert got the father's name wrong or else the newspaper obits all got it wrong (not impossible since it seems the same reporter would do the obits for several newspapers).
Here is the information from the General Notes on the other Esther that I am now eliminating from the family of Thomas Graham Morry II:
29/08/01 Gert Crosbie records:
Morry, Esther, youngest child of Thomas Morry, died aged 13. Nov. 30/49 PLPo (Patriot, Ledger and Post newspapers).
This is my only record of the existence of this child.
29/07/04 I had her formerly attached as child of Thomas Graham Morry I, but that didn't make sense because I do not believe he came to Newfoundland and in any event he was supposed to have died about the time she was presumed to have been born from the Gert Crosbie death record. On the other hand, T.G. Morry II wasn't supposed to have been married as early as 1836 when she was supposedly born, unless there was an earlier marriage that was not recorded. So her parentage is still a bit of a mystery.
180806:
BDM report of death notes that it was reported on 30 Nov. 1849 in: 1) Patriot and Terra Nova Herald 1833-1890 2) Public Ledger 1820-1882 (issues available begin 1827) 3) Morning Post and Shipping Gazette 1843-1862
Deceased was the youngest child of Thomas Morry. This implies there were other children. She was 13 years old at time of death
080116:
I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the later children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's. But I'm not really sure when St. Luke's came into being. [Later Note: dedicated by Bishop Inglis from Halifax on visit in July 1827. Source: Newfoundland Heritage website]

I have no way of deciding at this time which version is more likely to be correct and preferred. The version of the transcript taken from the LGS microfilm does not give a birth date and the one given elsewhere in 1895 seems incorrect.

Hi Chris,
With reference to your notes 138 & 139, it appears that Peter and Bridget Morry lived at Ferryland first after their marriage but they also lived at Caplin Bay for several years before they went to BC. The CE birth records show birth for Peter and Bridget's children as follows:
Augustus William - Oct 20 1890 - Ferryland Jane Winsor - March 1 1892 - Ferryland Honoria - January 27 1894 - Caplin Bay Esther Graham - October 20 1891 - Caplin Bay * Voilet - July 27 1899 - Caplin Bay
* I suspect this date may be transcribed incorrectly; it probably should be 1897 instead of 1891. If it is 1891, then the next birth in March1 1892 - less than five months later - must be incorrect. Note too that Esther Graham was recorded as being born at Caplin Bay.
Peter appears to have moved from Ferryland to Caplin Bay sometime between 1892 and 1894 births. For all of the above births, the CE records state that Peter was a farmer. However McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory shows him at Caplin Bay as a fisherman. In McAlpine's 1898 Directory Peter is listed as at Caplin Bay as an agent for Alan Goodridge & Sons - general merchants.

This name is recorded as Esther in Aunt Jean's photocopied records but Hestor on the LDS record and Enid O'Brien agrees. But on the Supreme Court papers relating to the Intestate Will of John Morry (her nephew) made out by Matthew Morry, her brother in 1837, it refers to her as Esther and notes she was resident in Dartmouth at the time and unmarried. I have therefore reverted today (20/06/02) to the name Esther.

She was still in possession of some personal resources in 1861 evidently indicating that her father must have left her some property since she never married. Note that there was hesitancy on the part of the census taker or the person who transcribed the census as to the spelling of the surname. This could indicate that it was actually spelt Morry or Morrey by Esther.

101106: At the time of the 1851 census she was living as a spinster of independent means and had a visitor with her named Caroline Amelia Grant, 22 year old dressmaker from Dartmouth. I have no knowledge of this person and how or if she may have been related to the Morrys. Her name was consistently spelled Morey in all the census returns so I am changing it back to that.

Of note is the fact that not only did Esther Morey [sic] marry in the RC Church of the Holy Trinity but she also acted as a witness at an earlier wedding of Charles Jones and Harriet Cose. This seems to imply that she was at least contemplating changing religions in advance of marrying and may even have done so.

1873/11/03 Carey Henry Morey Esther Radolphus Hanrahan Clara Morey John Conway
Note that both the groom and the bride had their surnames misspelled in keeping with the common errors of the days. The correct spelling of the name of Clara Morey would also be Clara Morry.
15/9/99 According to Enid O'Brien: Henry Sweetland Morry b. 1821 - died August 11, 1897. They had 8 children. It is from Henry that I am descended. His daughter Esther Graham Morry (born March 1854-July 31, 1939) married Captain Henry Carew on November 3, 1873 @ Ferryland RC Records. Henry is the son, CaptainThomas Carew and Anna Coryear. They are from Devon as well. I can let you know all about this group if you are interested.
Esther Graham Morry is Enid O'Brien's Great Grandmother
03/05/00 According to additional information from Enid: "(1) Esther Graham Morry (Mar. 1854-July 31-1939) ref. 1921 census + Evening Telegram married Captain Henry Carew on Nov. 3, 1873 (RC Ferryland [FD] )."
Discrepancy between dates of death. I suspect she is right and my later date is the date of burial.
16/08/00 Another email from Enid added this information: " Re: the descendants of Esther Morry/Henry Carew.... This couple actually had 12 children. Regarding Arthur (born 1874 and 1879) both these are correct as there were two children named Arthur. The first one died soon after birth.

Hi Chris:
Although you are probably reading this first, it is my last email for tonight. It is a picture of Esther Graham Morry/Carew with her nephew, Thomas Carew and her granddgt, Margaret McNamara Casey. This was taken in front of her old house in Shore's Cove. Margaret was born in 1909 so I would think this picture was taken in the 1920s.
I was given a younger picture of Esther yesterday but I put it in to be repaired (it was cracked). I will send it to you when I get it back.
If you want anything clarified, or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask, as I am really just giving you an overview.
I will talk to you later.
Regards.
Enid

Daily News Aug. 1, 1939
"An outstanding member of the community and of the parish of Cape Broyle passed to her eternal reward on Sun, July 30, 1939 when Esther Carew died at her home in Shore's Cove at the age of 87 years. She was the dgt of the late Henry Morry and Mary Devereaux of Ferryland.
The deceased is survived by one brother, Mr John Morry of this city and leaves 4 dgts - Annie McNamara of this city, Mrs JW Costello, Ferryland, Mrs Shorry, California, Mrs Peter Yard, Brooklyn and 3 sons, Thomas at home, Augustus at Seattle and John in Boston. Four sons, Ernest, Arthur, Vincent and Victor, the latter two paid the supreme sacrifice in France on July 10 and Nov 20, 1917 respectively, and also 2 brothers, the late Henry and George Morry and one sister, Mrs. Fenwick Crane of this city predeceased her.
Always a fervent Catholic she had the happiness of receiving the sacraments several times during her illness. The deceased was a lady of immeasurable charity and generosity. She was a charming conversationalist, a deep reader and her interests overflowed into every sphere of life.
Today, August 1, she will be tenderly laid to rest in Cape Broyle cemetery besides her husband who predeceased her several years ago. Funeral services conducted by Rev MJ Kennedy."
260208: In her submission for Separation Allowance after her son Victor was declared dead during WWI Esther noted that she was a widow, that her son Vincent had already died in WWI and that all but two of her children were married, those being two sons who went to the States and had not been heard from for years. These would have been Augustine and John Henry.

Found on the Newfoundland Genweb site reporting the Harbor Grace Standard and Conception Bay Adverstiser for publishing date 8 Mar. 1879:
At Caplin Bay, of diphtheria, Dec. 18th, Maud Ophelia, aged 6 years and 1 month; Dec. 26th, Ina, aged 4 years and 5 months; 30th Dec. EllenJellard, aged 10 years and 8 months; Jan. 4th, Priscilla Ann, aged 7 years and 7 months; Feb. 5th, Ethel May, aged 2 years and 7 months, daughters of Robert and Victoria MORRY.
Note slight discrepancy in second name. Don't know which is correct.
180806:
BDM notes that death was reported on 11 march 1879 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) Harbor Grace Standard ( also known as Standard and Conception Bay Advertiser) 1859-1936 3) Newfoundlander 1827-1884
Deceased was the daughter of Robert and Victoria Morry of Caplin Bay.Age at death given as 2 years and 7 months. This doesn't gibe with birth record.
It would appear she died on February 5 and was buried on February 7. The church record would refer to the latter.
140813:
No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date.
080116:
I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.
