170611 from Enid O'Brien: William (son Mary/Dr Carey) md a lady named Catherine ? from St. John's. Ref 1921 Census.
280412: From the 1921 Census on NGB website:
152 161 EAGAN Patrick M Head Married 1896 Nov 25 St.John's EAGAN Margaret F Wife Married 1895 Nov 26 Trepassey CAREY Wm M Bro/Law Single 1892 Feb 29 Trepassey CAREY Frdk M Bro/Law Single 1899 March 22 Trepassey
From this we know the correct spelling of the name Eagen as well as their stated dates of birth (often given falsely) and place of birth. It also suggests that both William and Frederick were single at the time. We know from Ted Thomson's aunt Edna that Fred never married but William did - not once but twice. So these marriages must have occurred after 1921.
We don't know where exactly they lived except that it was on Hamilton Avenue in Ward 1 in the west end. The dwelling numbers on this census do not correspond with street numbers unfortunately.
In 1935 William was married and living in Blackhead: 39 CAREY William HEAD M M 47 CAREY Kathleen Wife F M 35 CAREY William Son M S 8mos CAREY Helen Daughter F S 5 CAREY Helena? Adopted F S 2mos have my suspicions about the parentage of Helena. I think she may have been William's love child born to a woman named Catherin whilst already married to Kathleen.
in 1945 William is shown as being married to Catherine and his place of birth is now given as Ferryland:
BLACKHEAD ROAD 89 96 CAREY Wm J Father M M 57 Ferryland St. John's CAREY Catherine Mother F M 44 St. John's St. John's CAREY Helen Daughter F S 16 St. John's St. John's CAREY Lena ??? Daughter F S 11 St. John's St. John's This raises the question of whether there were two marriages or if the name of his wife was given as Cathy and the two census takers in 1935 and 1945 interpreted that as Kathleen and Catherine respectively. I am merging the two women based on this theory and thus eliminating a second marriage/partner for William. This means that Lena must be listed as an adopted child for the two parents I think.
