JUNE BRIDES
BAIRD - CARTER
The wedding of Miss Margaret Anderson CARTER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. CARTER, and Mr. John Poole BAIRD, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh BAIRD was solemnized at St. Thomas Church at 3 p.m. yesterday, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. A. CLAYTON. The bride was given away by her father, and was beautifully gowned in white charmeuse trimmed with lace, and white carnations, and maidenhair fern. She wore a court train, trimmed with silver brocade, and orange blossoms, the train bearers, being BAIRD Jr. who was dressed in white masters Hubert HERDER and James satin olive twist suits. The bridesmaid was Miss F. B. ROGERSON who looked charming in a gown of megenta shot taffeta, with a black toque, and carried a bouquet of White Carnations. The two little flower girls were Misses Margaret and Gordon BAIRD who looked very dainty in their White Satin dresses. They carried old fashioned bouquets of Carnations. The groom was assisted by Mr. Fred CARTER, brother of the bride, whilst Messrs. F. BENNETT, W. GOODRIDGE, H. P. CARTER and A. B. BAIRD were ushers. The Church was beautifully decorated with white hydrangeas, and snapdragon, and was filled to capacity with guest and friends of the happy couple. As the wedding party left the church, the wedding march was played by Professor STIRLING. After the ceremony a reception was held at "Hawthorne Dell", the country residence of the bride's parents where the usual toasts were duly honored. During the evening the happy couple motored to Topsail where they will stay at the summer residence of Mr. Hugh BAIRD, until the sailing of the S. S. Digby, when they will leave for their future home in London. The presents received were both costly and numerous, and included several very substantial cheques. The News joins with their many friends in wishing Mr. and Mrs. BAIRD many years of wedded bliss.

120315:

On 5 Nov. 1935, Margaret Baird arrived in Liverpool on the NOVA SCOTIA from St. John's. It is not clear whether she was intending to immigrate or simply paying a visit to relatives. The address she gave as her desitnation was 48 Hallswelle Rd., London SW 11 and she indicated that her intention was to settle "elsewhere in the British Empire". That sounds to me what they would say if they were only visiting Britain and intended to return home to Newfoundland eventually.

Other passengers on board with whom she would have been familiar included Annie Jessie Elny [Baird] Carter, her mother, Gertrude Bailey Carter her unmarried sister, Sydney Anne [Jones] Carter, her sister in law and Peter Terrington Carter, her nephew. Her mother and sister were going to stay at the Meyrick Court Hotel in Bournemouth, her sister in law and nephew were to stay at "Glantraeth", Bodorgan, Anglesey whilst her mother and sister indicated they too intended to settle somewhere else in the British Empire (presumably Newfoundland). The latter two indicated that Wales was their intended future home. So they were all on different missions it seems.

180719:

Margaret Carter was an avid amateur photographer and took dozens of photos of events surrounding the Alcock and Brown flight across the Atlantic which were on display at the Admiralty House Museum in Mount Pearl during the 100th anniversary commemoration of this historic event. I visited the Museum yesterday and took photos of many of her photos and other interesting artifacts there.

Talk about keeping it all in the family! She married twice to two Baird men. All three were first cousins of one another.

070721:

It has always been observed that there appears to be a gap in the list of children associated with William Carter and Joan Hill. I have just gone through that gap in the images of the parish register that can be viewed on FindMyPast and have found one additional child that MAY be their's. But the entry apparently contains an error in the mother's name:

"Mary the daughter of William Carter and Mary his wife baptized June the 27 -- June ye 27 [1717]"

There is no other William Carter recorded as a father of children being born in this register in these years and I therefore strongly suspect that the minister made an error in this entry and put Mary as the name of the child and the mother accidentally.

For now, and probably forever, it remains unproved and I will therefore not add this child into the family on FamilySearch.

                3. Ann Sanders

Notes
General:
Place and date of birth uncertain and need verification.

161208: In Dad Morry's "Notes on Ferryland and the Morry Family" there is a section entitled "Extract from letter to Howard Morry from:" with no name given. It was one of his aunts, probably Frances. it says in part: "Grandmother's mother was Ann Carter, the Surrogate's daughter. She ran away and married Saunders [by that spelling]; she married beneath her and had an awful life with him; he treated her badly."

I cannot authenticate any of this of course. But the relationship part is somewhat inaccurate. If it was Frances Morry who wrote the letter, it was her great grandmother, not her grandmother, whose mother married Sanders and her name was Mary, not Ann. The Morry's actually descend from the two sisters, Mary and Ann. But Ann's connection is as the grandmother of Anne Coulman who married Capt. Henry Winser. Their daughter, Elizabeth Sarah Winsor, married John Henry Morry.

180314:

The date of birth I have always used for Mary should have had a "Bef." in front. These qualifications were stripped out when my family tree file was being reimported from Family Tree Maker in December 2013. This has led to much confusion here and elsewhere in the file and I have to add "Bef" in many places where it has been expunged. In this case, Enid O'Brien rightly pointed out that it is ludicrous to think that she was born in 1770 because that would make her mother around 51 at the time and her first child would have been born when she was 13! More likely she was born around 1760 but I have no evidence to support that or any other date so I am simply re-adding the "Bef." qualification for now.

201214:

Today I am removing altogether the reference to a birth date because anything close to 1770 is ridiculous but I have no idea when it was that she actually was born. So it is better not to approximate so wildly as others have obviously done.
