• Medical Condition: Ill following the birth of their last child, Esther Graham Morry, 30 Apr 1837, Calvert, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Sunday, 30 April 1837
"Young Mrs. Morry, Caplin Bay, ill." Carter's infuriating habit of referring to women not only by their husband's surname, but often not even giving their husband's forename, here leaves us with a mystery. Matthew Morry Jr.'s wife, Anne Sanders, was far from young at this time and none of their sons were yet married. So who was this "young Mrs. Morry" who was ill? The answer lies in the fact that Mrs. Matthew Morry Sr. was still alive, though her husband had died the previous year. Since his death meant that his son, Matthew Morry Jr., could no longer be referred to as Jr., Carter evidently discriminated between his wife, Anne Sanders Morry, who was then the same age as Carter (47) and her mother in law, Anne Carter Morry, by referring to the former as "young". The illness undoubtedly had something to do with her recently giving birth to her last child. That child died at the age of 12 and the mother was in fragile health until she herself died in 1867, so it must have been a very difficult birth.\f3.

Notes
General:
15/9/99 In an email dated 8/9/99 from Enid O'Brien to Gillian, Ann's name is spelled with and without an "e", and the name of Anne's mother is given as Mary, not Ann as our records show. In fact, she contends that, based on information from Robert Saunder's 1834 diary and the well researched Carter genealogy, this Mary was the sister of Ann Carter already in our records thus closing a loop. Because it looks right, I have entered these relationships tentatively pending further research.

Also Anne's father's Christian name (Daniel) is provided where we lacked this information. This has not been verified by us.

All the other notes on Anne's birth and death are also from Enid.

1/11/99 All the above, with the exception of the e on the end of Anne's name, has now been confirmed with information on the "Family Search" Site of the CLS, information by Aunt Jean Funkhouser which obviously updates and adds to the material I had from her on photocopies.

In an email from Enid O'Brien dated Oct. 31, 1999: "When Matthew Morry (md to Ann) was sick and knew he was dying he made a will and left everything to his wife, Ann, and daughter Priscilla (who wasn't married at the time but later Married Wm. LeMessurier). He doesn't bequeath anything to the rest of his children. I presume because the rest were all independent at the time.

When Ann (Saunders) Morry died she was buried from the home of Wm. W. LeMesurrier (ie Priscilla's house) and I guess she went to live with them when Matthew died and would explain why she was buried in St. John's. Ref. Gazette/Times."

Newspaper Look-ups From The St. John's Daily News Contributed by Chris Shelley February 20, 2000

June 15, 1867 Deaths:

On Thursday morning, 6th inst., after a long illness, Ann, widow of the late Matthew MORRY, Esq., J. P., Caplin Bay, aged 76 years.

Based on this evidence I have changed Ann's date of death and assumed that the date I had previously (the 9th) was her burial.

In an email dated December 14, 2000 Enid O'Brien helps to shed light on when the Morrys moved from Caplin Bay to Ferryland for the first time:

"Regarding when they moved to Ferryland I also have in my possession a deed signed by Ann Morry, wife of Matthew Morry, transferring property in Aquaforte to a Mr. Ryan. On the deed it is quoted "I, Ann Morry, wife of Matthew Morry, late of Caplin Bay now of Ferryland" and this is dated 17th day of July 1832. It would appear that they moved to Ferryland shortly before this."

Email from Kevin Reddigan March 28, 2002, providing details on Morry deeds and land transactions reported in the Confederation Building for the Southern District - 1825-1888:

This is the deed for the sale of land at Aquaforte between "Ann Morry, wife of Matthew Morry ...late of Caplin Bay, but now of Ferryland" and Matthew Ryan of Aquaforte. Land is described as being on north side of Aquaforte, River Head and in possession of Michael Haley. Witnessed by her husband Matthew Morry and Benjamin Sweetland. [See transcript in Media Gallery]

300816:
In a Bill of Sale on file at the Southern District Court alluded to by Enid above, Ann is shown to have property in her own right in Aquaforte which she sells to a Matthew Ryan for the paltry sum of 9 Pounds. I believe that there is more behind this. I think that Matthew and his partner, Benjamin Sweetland, who witnessed the transaction, were essentially paying back Matthew Ryan for money they owed him by getting Ann to sell him this property for much less than it was worth.

Enid and Kevin and I have debated several times whether the Mrs. Ann Morey mentioned in this transaction was Anne Sanders or Anne Carter, since both married a Matthew Morry (father and son). On balance it seems to be more likely that it was Ann Sanders.

A copy of the transcript is enclosed in her Media Gallery.

Events

• Court: Supreme Court Southern Circuit, "Donald" Saunders vs James Morrison, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. According to Kevin Reddigan's reading of the case:

James Morrison was withholding payment for wood that Daniel had delivered to him. It would appear that Robert Saunders owed money to Andrew Morrison, (the defendant's brother and business partner) so James was trying to make Robert pay up by 'stiffing' his son , Daniel.

• Interesting: Loss of Daniel Sanders' boat and Provisions, Between 25 Nov 1835 and 26 Nov 1835, Aquaforte, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Daniel Sanders Sr. was dead at this time. This could only refer to his grandson of the same name:

"Wed. 25 - Wind NE all day with a very heavy sea running & high tide - could not lay alongside the wharf & run in the Pool was so great all day as to make it difficult to hold in the boats along side the stages - it is said Daniel Sanders' boat was stove at Aquaforte and sank today with provisions on board from St. John's belonging to many people."

"Thu. 26 - ...Dan'l Sanders'boat sank in Aquaforte just returned from St. John's having a good deal of provision in her..."

"Robert Carter's diary, date Mar 10, 1834. "Mr Daniel Saunders died last night at Aquaforte. He was 82 years old. Mrs. William Morry was at Aquaforte this past 3 days attending the last moments of her father".

[NB 140910: It was later learned that there was an error in the transcript by Jean Carter Stirling and that the person who attended to him in his last days was his daughter Anne, wife of Matthew Morry. In the original diary it shows her name as Mrs. Mw Morry which was mistaken to be Wm. This makes much more sense. The transcript by the Law Society does not repeat this error]

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

210706:

I have discovered that all these years the Surname of this man and his children (including Anne, Matthew Morry II's wife) and descendants has been spelled incorrectly in Aunt Jean's records and hence in mine. There are countless references to this family as "Sanders" in census and legal documents that can be seen on NGB and elsewhere. I am therefore changing all of these references to Sanders today.

1800 Census shows the following:

Daniel Sanders (father) Children: Robert 17 William 11 Ann 10

Mary Carter Sanders was evidently deceased at this time.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

241217:

In Robert Carter's diary this is recorded:
"Saturday, 15 September 1832
The Ann, Capt. Sanders, brought in the circuit court. This could be Daniel Sanders of Aquaforte and if so the vessel could have been named after his daughter of that name, the wife of Matthew Morry junior, and hence my 3rd great grandmother. Daniel Sanders was married to Mary Carter, the diarist's aunt, once again demonstrating the close inter-relationship of merchant class families in the outports in those days."

I was not aware previously that he was a ship captain and vessel owner however and it may be that the unknown Capt. Sanders was one of his sons or one of his brother Robert's sons.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

201218:

It was initially believed that two of his grandparents (presumably his mother's parents) were named Elizabeth Gobbett and Ellias Piggeon [sic]. These names are found in a petition to restore to them a grant they had lost which certified their ownership of property later occupied by the Saunders/Sanders family. The information is found in the Carter-Nason court records, specifically a summary of the ownership of lands around the Pool between 1750 and 1819 compiled by the lawyer of John Noonan of Ireland who was claiming lands in that location then occupied by the Carters but stated to be his by right of inheritance.

Same Vol. [1], Page 141 Elizabeth Gobbett and Piggeon Grandparents to Saunders in Ferryland in who possession this property recorded is. By Sir Francis Drake, Governor and Commander in Chief in and over the Island of Newfoundland and its dependancies. Whereas Elizabeth Gobbett and Ellias Piggeon of Ferryland Harbour have this day presented me a petition setting forth that she had a patent granted her for a plantation near Ferryland Pool known by the name of Piggeons Plantation, (say three boat rooms), bounded by Mr. Benger's plantation on the S. East and Thomas Smith's on the N. West but by misfortune lost the original patent, Therefore praying me to grant another in consideration of the loss she sustained in want of right to hold said plantation. I do hereby by virtue of the power and authority to me given Grant the said Elizabeth Gobbett and Ellias Piggeon the above mentioned premises and boundaries thereof their heirs, Escors?, Administrators, and assignees for ever. Given under my hand and seal at Ferryland, 31 th day of August, 1750 F. W. Drake By command of the Governor. William Hall

But it is now noted that the above trancript by Ray Curran contains errors resulting from the apparent poor quality of the copy he transcribed. Elizabeth Gobbett was in fact née Elizabeth Pidgeon, hence "alias" Pidgeon. There was no person named Ellias Pidgeon involved. Elizabeth was the executrix of her father's will and hence rightly claimed his property in Ferryland.

100520:

There is a paucity of court records pertaining to Daniel, unlike his brother John. All that Kevin Reddigan has been able to find, based upon the transcripts by Ray Curran on the NGB website are these:
