According to Christine: " mother and father had a very unhappy marriage and mum and I left the house when I was 17 (on the advice of Norman who was by then in the police force). Nobody told us when my father died and I phoned Douglas and he told me 'my mother left my father, I want nothing to do with you and I want nothing to do with my mother'! Such cruel words especially as he was a Kirk Elder."

Fredie Mercer Caines had told me that Chris Taylor's husband's Christian name was James but in a letter that Chris wrote to her aunt Mary Bailey in 1942 she refers to her husband as "Dougie" so I don't know where the confusion arose. I will write to Fredie to see if she can explain.
According to Christine, as a result of his service as a Quartermaster Sergeant Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps in WWII he contracted TB and was hospitalised for about three years during her earlier childhood during which time he was quaranteened and they could not be together. 8292
