According to the Marriage Banns their surnames were both Winser. It is quite possible that they were cousins, at least second cousins. However I have been unable so far to identify the parents of Peter.

Notes
General:
031218:

I know nothing of the parentage of this person. He was discovered first of all as the father of a son named Henry who was baptised at St. Mary the Virgin in Denbury on October 27, 1850 and later other children showed up. Other than this and the name of the wife and the fact that the father was a labourer in Denbury, I know absolutely nothing at this time. He does not fit with any of the known Peter Winsers/Winsors/Windsors.

061218:

I have tentatively linked these two Peter Winsers as father and son because the marriage of the son shows that his father was named Peter and this is the only Peter of an appropriate age that I have from the Denbury records who is not already shown as married. I suspect the marriage took place in a nearby village.

150523:
I think the mystery resolved itself to some extent. Eventually a marriage record was discovered for Peter and Susan and it was in fact in Denbury, not in another nearby community. The confusion are from the fact that the marriage occurred only 7 months before the birth/baptism of their first child, Henry, so was probably hushed up. But I still do not have a birth/baptism record for Peter proving that he was the son of Peter Winser and an unknown woman. This missing link still needs to be found.

I am not absolutely certain I have matched the correct person with this burial record because it does not say that he is the son of Henry and Catherine Winser. Normally a child's burial record stated the names of the parents or at least one parent. But I know of not other Peter Winser of this era associated with Torbryan as he was. 8682

In an email from Helen Steinke dated 4/07/00:

"PETER WINSOR and SARAH SYMONDS (my g g g grandparents) had two sons, JACOB AND PETER. Jacob married Anna Jennings (my g g grandparents) and Peter married Sarah Payne (also my g g grandparents). They in turn had many children, out of which was a son and a daughter from each batch. Peter and Sarah Symonds bore PETER WINSOR and CAROLINE. WINSOR.. Jacob and Anna Jennings bore DANIEL HENRY WINSOR and ANNA JENNINGS WINSOR. Figure it out - very sticky and very complicated, but once it is in your head, it never leaves, because you are always having to explain it to someone. Out of these four, Peter Winsor married Anna Jennings Winsor, their oldest daughter being Elizabeth Sarah Winsor who married John Henry Morry. Daniel Henry Winsor married Caroline Winsor (my g.grandparents.). In 1891 the family of Peter and Anna added the "D" into their name while three of their sons were travelling in England, they had it done legally. I am not sure if the whole family adopted it or not, but I think most of them did. That is beside the point. I have found that in ALL the families I am doing and have done (CHAFE - MANUEL - MARCH - ROWE - BUTLER - RUBY - MORRY) the intermarriage is horrendous. It is funny we are not all a bunch of morons and hemopheliacs. Dorothy Keough (a descendent of Peter and Anna) in Aquaforte said to me once that is why there is so much mental retardation in the family. I believe she was just making a point, because I haven't found that in my research. But of course, she knows most of these people first hand, as I only know of them. I believe all the interaction between the Morry and Winsor families was descending from Peter and Anna except for William who married into Jacob's family. I am really getting carried away - so with this I'll end this epistle. helen"

Chris

The PETER and SARAH buried in Aquaforte, in the Meadow, is PETER and SARAH PAYNE. Peter of PETER and SARAH SYMONS was buried in England. I had also thought he was buried in Nfld, but I am now in the belief this PETER never came west. I have told you of my new contact. I have to go through her stuff again. My arm is still so Stiff and Sore it is hard for me to handle all my books and things. After the holidays I will get serious again. I HOPE. In the meantime I have been trying to cope with a new HODGSON contact (my own descendency). sorry- I am rambling - I have pictures of all those gravestones in Newfoundland - except Peter and Sarah Payne. The bugs were biting so bad while I was there I was going crazy. The grass and weeds were so long where he was. My great grandfather is buried in the same area in the Meadow - Dorothy promised she would take one after the bug season and send it, but she never did. That is in THE MEADOW. The others are all buried in the main graveyard in the Church Yard. You see, it was this PETER who converted to Catholacism. (Peter of Sarah Payne). It is so easy to get these two men mixed up.

Good to hear from you, however Have a wonderful holiday Helen "

There is some doubt as to the date and place of his death with Anthony Oliphant saying that the date appears in the family bible as December 31, 1825 and the location as Aquaforte but Helen Steinke (their G. Granddaughter) being eqully adamant that he died June 14, 1828 in his native England and that he never did come to Newfoundland. This is more than likely a result of the large number of Peter Winsers (or Winsors) and the fact that more than one of them married a woman named Sarah. Clearly there is much confusion but the church records in England seem to be reliable and I am opting for those.

300712:

Keith Matthew's name file for Matthew Morry reveals that Peter Winsor was chosen to captain several of his vessels in the first two decades of the 19th century. But which Peter?

090523:

NOTE: I now believe that it is highly unlikely that Peter Winser the father was the person named in the various Ferryland court records. It is almost certain that these pertain to his son of the same name who was a planter in Aquaforte during these years. Indeed it is highly unlikely that the father ever lived in Newfoundland.

While I cannot say with certainty that she was a daughter of this Thomas by his wife "Marryn" Endell, since they were not married until a year later, it seems highly likely that she was their daughter and either aborted or miscarried prior to their getting married. There were no other Winser burials prior to hers in Denbury going back as far as 1528. The fact that it was likely an unplanned birth is also evidenced by the fact that her Christian name is written in and then partially crossed out in the burial register making it difficult to be certain what was intended. 4467
