I am exploring other options for the parentage of William Mory of Stoke Gabriel. I do not believe now that Geoffrey was right in choosing Henry Morey of Totnes for this honour simply because he was available at the right time. There is no christening record for a son named William to that Henry whereas there are other Williams with names like Morey being born in other parishes not that far away that might qualify. Or perhaps he was born in Stoke Gabriel and the christening record is missing or illegible.

It is worthy of note, however, that there was another man whose name appeared as father of several children at Totnes at more or less the same time as Henry. His name is Richard and, because Henry had a son by that name who died shortly after being born in 1642, this person is more likely Henry's brother. I am not pursuing that line right now because of my doubts about Henry being William's father. But I would note that if Geoffrey was aware of the existence of this other man in Totnes he might have been more reticent to jump to the conclusion that William was the son of the Henry when he could as easily be the son of this Richard.

In June when I was in Newfoundland I did an exhaustive search on the microfilms of parishes surrounding Stoke Gabriel at the Maritime History Archive for anyone fitting the description of William Mory, husband of Jennett Full, and came up empty. I am convinced that the parents, grandparents and great grandparents that Geoffrey had proposed for William are not valid but I cannot provide a substantiated alternative for his parentage at this time and may never be able to do so. But because of my serious doubts, I am severing the relationship between William and these three previous generations today but will retain all the data on the individuals cut loose for now.

It isn't clear how or if this William Morey, born in Cornworthy, is related to William H. Morey and his wife Jane, born in Stoke Gabriel and/or James and Willmett Morey born in Dittisham and living in Cornworthy. All three of these villages are within one or two miles of each other. It seems quite likely that they may all be one family with James and Willmett being the father and mother and one of the Williams beingtheir son, but perhaps not as the dates don't jive. They are probablyrelated nonetheless.

Whether they are distant relations of our line or not (a vestige of the family that used to live in Stoke Gabriel several generations before) is also unclear.

I don't know if this family is in any way related to our family but the fact that the father hails from Stoke Gabriel suggests he may be part of the vestiges of the family that remained behind when others moved to Dartmouth several generations prior.
