From Enid O'Brien 250213:

Re Florence Morry Daily News July 2 1949 Morry - Passed away July 1, 1949, Miss Florence Morry, age 92 years Leaving her sister Alice Ellis. Funeral by motor hearse from her late residence 27 Victoria Street.

27 Victoria Street was owned by Peter Winsor and in his will probated in 1905 he left it to his 9 children, 5 dgts and 4 sons. Two of these sons were John and Henry as they are named as executors.

I think John Winsor above was married to Clara Isabelle (Morry) Winsor as she was buried from 27 Victoria Street. See below -

Evening Telegram 28/11/1931 Clara Isabelle, dgt of late John Morry (Ferryland) and widow late John J. Winsor of Ferryland. Late res 27 Victoria Street. When John Winsor died they were living on Monkstown Road so she must have moved into the Victoria Street house at some point.

To confuse matters Peter Winsor (of the 1905 will) had a daughter living with him called Clara Isabelle Winsor.

Also, buried from 27 Victoria Street on Jan 5/1945 (my birthday) was Stanley Charles Windsor (sic) son of the late Henry G Windsor of Aquaforte. (This has nothing to do with anything but just thought I would mention it as I was looking through my notes).

His gravestone in the old Ferryland non-denominational cemetery reads: ERR BY JOHN MORRY FOR HIS FATHER HENRY, DIED 11 AUGUST 1897 AGED 76YRS. ALSO, YEARS, AND HIS BROTHER ARTHUR, DIED 1888 AGED 28 YEARS AND HIS BROTHER FREDERICK 1890 AGED 29 YEARS.

Enid O'Brien 03/05/00:

"Frederick (1861-March 1890). Headstone in Ferryland, old cemetery. The headstone says he was "Lost at sea". He was 29 years old. I don't know if he was married. (This is another Fred that could possibly be the father of the Major)."

Enid O'Brien 22/11/01:

"You might want to look at the following site <www.downtosea.com>. I found out that Esther's brother, Fred, whose name was on the headstone in Ferryland was drowned on the ship "Wm R Rice" age 29 years, lost on a passage to Iceland March/April 1890. The whole crew (16) were lost. Capt John MacDonald was Master. This is the brother whose name was on the headstone and I only knew he was "lost at sea"."

Notes
General:
Email from Enid O'Brien Dated October 31, 1999: "Frederick Clift Morry B. Sept 25, 1828 [N.B. This birthdate is incorrect; should be 10 Jan. 1827] and died 1850. According to Howard Morry, Frederick was a sheep herder in Australia and went mad in the Indian ocean and threw himself overboard. His cloak was sent home to Calvert and was in the possession of his cousin Elizabeth who was single and lived at Athlone."

Email from Enid O'Brien dated Nov. 2, 1999: "2. When I was typing the Info on Frederick Clift Morry and George Morry I went to the line above and below it. I have it correct in my notes (I must need my glasses changed). I have Frederick Clift Morry born Jan 10th, 1827 and Baptised August 28th, 1827 (Petty Hr Records, C of E). His date of death (folklore is circa 1850). This would need to be confirmed. George Morry, Born 29/9/1828, Baptised Oct. 1, 1828 and died Oct. 4th, 1828 (Petty Hr Records, CofE). If I get anything further on Frederick I will let you know. I believe the "Clift" in thename would be from the descendants of Shannon Clift (who had businessin Ferryland and married into the Carter Family)."

In Nov. 2 email Enid corrected earlier mistake on DOB but her new date of 10 Jan. 1827, supported by C of E Records, contradicts Aunt Jean's record of 20 Jan. 1827. I had chosen to accept Enid's information due to sourcing. But verification of C of E records on NLGS website has indicated the 20 January date once again so have revised to accept that one.

Note that spelling of Christian name on NLGS transcript of record of birth is Frederic but this is likely an error as it is not in accord with any other sources.

261106: George LeMessurier family tree shows he was known as Fred

230908: In an email from Karen Chapman she sets straight the various stories on how Frederick died, at least as far as Dad Morry told the story. Here is what she wrote:

"I found one letter from Grandpa [to Aunt Jean] which talks about Frederick. He said "Your Uncle Fred left school in England and went to Australia to the gold fields when he was eighteen. He got some gold and invested in sheep. Had a big sheep ranch. He was coming home for a visit. Lizzie had a letter from him and his will. He left all to her as she was his favorite niece. She never got the ranch and only 1500 pounds of his money. It was a six months voyage to Australia at that time and twas impossible to get to do anythings about the will. Well he got sun stroke on the way home. He was going to the gold rush in California in 1849. He jumped into the Indian Ocean crazy with sun stroke. He had a long black cloak lined with Red silk or satin and a big silver clasp in the neck of it. When the boat rowed up and the man grabbed it, He [Frederick?] just reached up and undid the buckle and sank. Lizzie had the cape. So, Jean, your ancestors were wild men. Guess the Scotch blood."

101009: Yesterday I invested in a one year membership on Ancestry.com because I have some time on my hands at the moment and can take full advantage of it. Today I discovered on Ancestry.com a record of Frederick Clift Morry on a voters list in Barrabool Hills, Barrabool Parish, Kardinia Division, the South-western Province (Victoria), Australia dated 21st July,1856 to 30 Jun, 1857. This was the first solid evidence I have ever found backing up the old family history that he travelled to Australia and became a sheep farmer there. It also pushes back his date of death at least until 1856-57. I had previously thought he had died around 1850. I am making this change to my records today.

By the way, it was purely by chance that I found this because it was mixed up with Voters Lists for 1901 to 1954 for some reason.

In addition to this wonderful find, on the same page of the Voters List there is another name that rings a bell: Benjamin Holdsworth. There can be little doubt that this man was part of the famous Dartmouth Holdsworth family from whom the Morrys bought their premises in Ferryland in or around 1836. In fact, it is entirely plausible that these two young men, acquainted through business ties between their families or possibly from attending the same school in England, set out together to make their fortunes in Australia. If so, this opens up a whole new avenue of enquiry concerning the fate of Frederick.

181009: Found online in the Victoria Government Gazette, March 19, 1858 and again April 9, 1858:

Dissolution of Partnership It is hereby mutually agreed that the partnership hitherto existing between Mr. John Highett and Mr. F. C. Morry, is this day dissolved by mutual consent. All debts due up to the 7th October last, will be discharged by F. C. Morry, who will also receive all moneys due up to that date, and all debts subsequently by Mr. Jno. Highett. Geelong, 1st February, 1858. John Highett Fred C. Morry

Witness T. M. Sparks No. 453

Elsewhere on the Victoria Government site ( http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/re-member/bioregfull.cfm?mid=416 ) it indicates that John Highett had as his former partner, "William Clark Haines, one of first settlers Barrabool Hills, Geelong district; with John Highett took up land there early 1842; dissolved partnership 1846; then renting nearly 3000 acres in 49 farms which he mostly sold off in 1850s;" Haines was a Member of the Legislative Assembly after that for many years.

Another website ( http://home.vicnet.net.au/

manshs/MansfieldHistoricalSociety-HistoryofMansfield.htm ) on the history of Mansfield, Victoria has this to say about brothers John and William Highett:;"The main street, Highett Street, is named after William Highett, who was a squatter on the Maindample pastoral run. He came from Tasmania with his brother John, who grazed stock near the Dandenong Creek and named the Melbourne suburb of Highett. John Highett later settled at Geelong and named his property Highton, now a Geelong suburb, after his family's farm at Weymouth, England. His son, Francis, built Highton Manor at Mansfield in 1896, which has been converted to a motel and restaurant.";;So far it hasn't been possible to learn how long Frederick Clift Morry and John Highett were partners. However, another website of the Geelong heritage Centre ( http://www.geelongcity.vic.gov.au/common/Public/Documents/8cbd8269743b 7a7-Geelong%20Advertiser%20Index%201850-1866%20A-E.pdf )extends the dates back a little by provid

140813:

There are several transcripts of the Ferryland C of E records on the NGB website and the first forename is spelled Frederic on some and Frecerick on others. The latter is almost certainly the correct spelling because the former is how the name is spelled in French primarily.

280114:

Today I had an aha moment as a result of reinstalling and testing the programme Map My Family Tree. The display revealed a startling fact I had not considered previously. Two incidents only in the family file took place in Geelong, Victoria, Australia -- the presence of the name Frederick Clift Morry on a voters list in 1856-57 as a land leaser; and the death of Archibald Clift on 25 February 1855. The two events are obviously connected to each other just as these two families are also closely intertwined. Frederick's middle name being the surname of Archibald is mirrored in the fact that Archibald had a nephew named Shannon Morry Clift. You don't get much closer than that. It seems almost certain therefore that the two young men went together on an adventure to Australia. One died there and the other died on the ship on the way home.

020816:
The Maritime History Archive has amongst its online digital renderings the diary of William Sweetland during the years 1850-1853 whilst he was Magistrate at Bonavista. Somehow it is possible to search for words in the handwritten text. I think that this means someone has already transcribed the whole document but for some reason the transcription is not offered for download. In any event, a search on the word "morry" shows up 11 "hits" with most referring to correspondence or visits by Robert Morry, or William Morry, one being a reference to writing to Thomas Morry and one, dated August 7, 1853, stating that "Robert's [Morry] Letter was dated 26th March -- Fred Morry in London looking for a Vessel to take him to Adelaide". Although we of course knew that Frederick Clift Morry went to Australia and died on the return journey, this more accurately times his departure for that country and his initial destination. 282

Fred Smeaton is a childhood friend of John Morry. They used to play together during their summer holidays spent visiting realtives in Cape Broyle. Fred contacted me on January 18, 2004 to seek my assistance intracking down John, whom he had not had contact with for many years. Fred had seen my website and figured I might know of his whereabouts.

As it happend, my earlier contact with John's niece, Lisa Morry, who works for the Chilliwack Times in BC had confrimed that John was alive and living in BC, with two daughters named Cathy and Linda. Enid O'Brien knew a little of this family too from her earlier contacts with BC Morrys and also knew Fred but was unable to make the contact for him.

Fred finally made contact with John and sent me this message:
