This is one of several families that I have found that share our surname only by accident. Evidently when this family arrived at Ellis Island from Italy they wound up having the spelling of their name altered to "Morry" and it stuck. There is no blood relationship between them and us and I only retain information on the family as a matter of curiousity, especially due to the similarities in names (e.g. Matthew Morry, Emily Morry, etc,)

The only information I have on the relationship between our line and Annie Morry comes from Clive LeMessurier's family tree file. This needs to be cross-checked with other data.

She is shown on the Carter family Tree believed to have been researched by Joey Smallwood as a daughter of Thomas Graham Morey [sic], though she is referred to as Annie LeMessurier on the Carter Family tree, which I take to mean her second name was LeMessurier since I am sure in those days she would have taken her father's name, Morry, even if she were illegitimate.

This transcript is so badly botched (as are many from the Anglican Cathedral register as recorded on NGB) that it is almost impossible to identify as being the same person, but evidently it is. However, in this instance in any event, the person responsible for this mess is the person who transcribed the church register for the Vital Statistics. A copy of that original transcript is enclosed in the Media here and it reflects exactly what is shown above.

According to NLGS records on their website, His gravestone in the old Ferryland non-denominational cemetery reads: ERR BY JOHN MORRY FOR HIS FATHER HENRY, DIED 11 AUGUST 1897 AGED 76 YRS. ALSO, YEARS, AND HIS BROTHER ARTHUR, DIED 1898 AGED 28 YEARS AND HIS BROTHER FREDERICK 1890 AGED 29 YEARS.
According to Enid O'Brien email 03/05/00: "Arthur Morry (1860-June 1888) His headstone in the old cemetery in Ferryland says he died in June 1888 but the Evening Telegram says he died Mar. 11, 1887 in Montreal. He was 28 years old but I know nothing else about him. I don't know if he was married."
06/08/00 I will verify discrepancies on dates concerning website information with Enid but her information is usually reliable. This makes me wonder about how accurate the information on the NLGS site may be.
07/08/00 Enid O'Brien email:
"Re: Arthur Morry (son of Henry Sweetland Morry). When I looked at Arthur's headstone some years back I took a picture of it. I just had another look at it and it says that he died June 1888,age 28 years. (which would mean he was born 1859/1860) However, I believe the newspaper over the headstone because they couldn't put it in the Gazette before the event had taken place. "Arthur, 3rd son of Henry Morry of Ferryland, died at Montreal, age 20 years", April 5, 1887, G, E.(which would make his birthdate 1867). So, take your pick? I couldn't find a baptismal certificate. I thought maybe they would have gotten his age correct on the headstone but I felt the Gazette would have the year correct. The NLGS website which shows it to be 1898 is definitely an error."
On the basis of all this conflicting information I conclude the following: The NLGS data was transcribed wrong; not June 1898, Age 28, but rather 1888, Age 20. Moreover, the 1888 (if that is what it truly shows) is an outright mistake and should have been 1887, as in the Gazette. Enid's report of the death notice in the Evening Telegram lends credence to the 1887 year of death, though the specific day and month are in disagreement still. Therefore, On balance I am now prepared to accept the evidence of the Gazette and make him 20 at the time of death, thus born in 1867.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Photographed his headstone in the Ferryland old non-denominational cemetery 15 July 2005. It is almost buried in the ground and I could not even see the text below his name which refers to his brother Frederick.
200806:
BDM transcript on CD-ROM reports death notice appeared on 05 Apr 1887 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) Evening Telegram (Telegram) 1879-
It reported that Deceased was the third son of Henry Morey, Ferryland. The date of death was given as 11 Mar 1887, the place Montrιal and the age 20. I'd say it is fairly definite now that he was born in 1868 and died 20 years later in Montrιal, though the specific dates are still in doubt.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
220213 Here we go again! Geoff Martin found the obit in the digital archive initiative at MUN from the Evening Telegram on April 1, 1887. It states: "At Montreal, on the 11th ult., Arthur, third son of Mr. Henry Morey, Ferryland, aged 29 years. --R.I.P."
What this shows is that a number of people who have cited this entry in the past misread it, possibly because of a poor quality copy or microfilm. He died on 11 March 1887 and was 29 years old at the time, hence born ca 1857 or 1856 depending on when his birthday fell. I will make the corrections today. The gravestone is completely in error in every respect.

This seems to provide an explanation for why Mary Oxenham Carter was over that way when she died but not why she would have been planted there rather than in her ancestral home in Ferryland.

15/5/99 According to Enid O'Brien: > Arthur Kemp Morry (1823). Arthur married Mary Oxenham Carter (not > Graham Carter). They were childless.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
According to McAlpine's 1904 Directory for Ferryland, Arthur Morry was listed as a fisherman. In that year he would have been 81 years of age and not likely to be fishing.
Arthur shows up for the first and only time in the Voters List for Caplin Bay 1840 - 1859 in the 1855 list and has "Beach" shown as his specific domicile area.
No Morry shows up in the Voters List for Ferryland 1840-1859 until John's name appears in 1849 with "North Side" given as his specific domicile. In 1855 and 1859 he is joined on the list by his brothers Henry (South Side) and Arthur (North Side) in that order, who evidently moved from Caplin Bay at that time (Arthur's name appeared on the list for Caplin Bay before that but not Henry's).
Vital Statistics records for Ferryland District show that he died of old age on 16 December, 1907. Earlier indication of date of death on 18 December, 1907 is probably burial date. These records also indicate his place of birth as Caplin Bay but his place of death as Ferryland as we surmised.

Information provided by George Cull:
NL GenWeb 1894 Directory Data Trinity Bay Region
In a letter ( a transcript of which was provided to me by Brigid Davies Smith in Sept. 2002) to Bill (Willam) Morry, son of Peter Frederick Morry, on March 26, 1938, Dad Morry (Howard Leopold Morry) had this to say about Bill's uncle Arthur:
"Uncle Arthur was also a sea captain; he courted a girl whose father was wealthy and did not want his daughter to marry him so Arthur having a load of fish for the Mediterranean, stole her through the window and married her and brought her across with him, but it wasn't a very happy marriage as he, poor man, was an awful man for drink."
This helps explain why his wife died and was buried in Conception Bay, not Ferryland.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
160916:
Well not completely ....!
It turns out that Arthur was a trader in Old Perlican in the 1894 McAlpine Directory. So it wasn't that his wife ran off to Conception Bay to escape an unhappy marriage, because he went there as well. No one knows why.

020317:
In one of many letters written to Aunt Jean when they were collaborating on researching the Morry Family History in the late 1950s and 1960s, Dad Morry wrote that: "Arthur married Mary Oxenham Carter, Sheriff Carter's sister. No Family. Great Uncle Arthur was a great stepdancer. He had his own vessel when he was young. Carried on business in Old Perlican afterward. His wife is buried there."
I'm only just reading this for the first time today, though these notes were passed to me 15 years ago by Karen Chapman!
In another letter dated March 11, 1958, Aunt Jean transcribed what he wrote as follows:
Dad's great uncle
"Matt's son Arthur stole Judge Carter's daughter, Mary, out through her bedroom window. He had a load of fish for the Mediterranean and he came up at night and hove to off the narrows and sent the boat ashore with a note for her. She had a servant girl called Brennan and she got her to get the men (as her father had locked her in). She got Jim Brennan, Martin Kelly and Billy Bryan to take her out the window and remove the trunks and Mary (her name was Mary Oxenham Carter - a name well known in English history with Drake and Hawkins). The girl Brennan spent her lifetime with Mary O, as they called her, and had many trips to England with them. (Sheriff Carter was her brother)."

General:
According to Roberta Sullivan's transcribed notes (Nfld. GenealogicalSociety), her headstone in the Ferryland Anglican Cemetery reads:
"Elizabeth Sarah, wife of John Morry, died 13 February 1879 ages 51 years. Also, Augusta Windsor, died 17 June 1873 aged 15 years 7 months "
Note that date of Augusta's death is way off from our records of her birth (20 June, 1862) and death (21 January, 1878). Also spelling of second name is in dispute. I'm inclined to believe our date of death since it conforms with the stated age at death from our presumed birth date.
In an email dated 7/8/00 Enid O'Brien wrote:
"Re: Augusta Windsor Morry. The Petty Harbour Church of England Records state the birth 20/6/1862 and date of death as 21 Jan 1878. However, Elizabeth Sarah's date of burial is listed as 16 February 1878, age 15 years. (She probably died on the 13th as on the headstone but I would think the year on the headstone is wrong, because I don't think they would list her as dead in the records a year before she died)."
From this it appears to me that the headstone data on the NLGS site is mis-transcribed. It is easy to imagine that someone could have mistaken 21 Jan 1878 for 17 Jun 1873, either on a badly eroded headstone or in reading the handwriting of another person who took down the data, possibly on a frigid, rainy day in November! Aunt Jean's data also say 21 Jan 1878. Therefore I am accepting the Petty Harbour Church dates rather than the NLGS.
Minister at Christening was Robert Temple according to C of E records in Ferryland.
150703: Having seen and photographed the gravestone, it is clear that it indicates Augusta's date of death as June 17th 1878 and her age at that time as 15 years and 7 months. Thus Roberta did take down the year incorrectly. However, this still does not explain the discrepancy with the Church records which have her dying on 21 January 1878. I suspect that was mistranscribed too and actually read 21 Jun 1878 and was mistaken as 21 Jan 1878.
April 5, 2004: Church of England Ferryland Burial Record on Newfoundland's Grand Banks website: January 21, 1878Morry, Augusta Winsor Ferryland 15 Dan Henry Winsor
200806: Just to complicate matters, the Gert Crosbie BDM information has now been transcribed onto CD-ROM and gives different information again.
It reports her death notice appeared on 29 Jan 1878 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) St. John's Free Press and Semi-Weekly Advertiser, 1877-1878 and that Deceased was the fifth daughter of John Morey, postmaster. Note the spelling of the surname. This is very common in the database and I'm not sure if it represents transcription errors when converting it to a CD-ROm, errors by Gert Crosbie in copying it from the newspapers, errors in the newspapers themselves or the actual way that the families in question spelled their name at the time.
The date of death is given as 17 Jan 1878. This is quite possible. the way the headstone read it could have been Jan or Jun. If the transcriber got the date of the newspaper correctly then the date of death was probably in January, not June. She was reported to have died in Ferryland and to have been 15 at the time.
From all of the above I now conclude that she died on January 17, 1878, she was buried on Jan. 21, 1878 and the death record appeared in the newspapers on Jan. 29, 1878. She was definitely 15 (or 15 and 7 months to be precise according to the headstone). So she was born in June 1862 as we had previously agreed.

I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.

According to Enid O'Brien in email on 29/04/02: "When Augustus William was baptised on Oct 20, 1890. Peter was listed as "farmer" from Ferryland. "
April 5, 2004: Church of England Ferryland Burial Record on Newfoundland's Grand Banks website: August 21, 1892Morry, Augustus William Caplin Bay 2 Theodore R. Nurse
300112: The church record of birth and death evidently give Ferryland as the address. This would have been where the baptism and burial took place but the actual birth and death were in Caplin Bay where the family lived before moving to BC. I have corrected these mistakes here. Bridget Smith believes that the family lived in St. John's briefly running a store at this time and that it was in St, John's where Augustus was born and died. However the church record gives no support to this and I believe it is more important to indicate where the family's substantitve residence was rather than a temporary one they may have briefly occupied.

BDM reports the birth of a male child to Henry Morey (sic) appeared on o7 Jun 1887 in: 1) Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895 2) Evening Telegram (Telegram) 1879-
The place of birth was Fort Townsend so it was definitely our Henry, who was a constable there. This is the only record I have of this child.
