050703: My father, Thomas Graham Morry, tells me that when he was young his father (Howard Leopold Morry) used to go over to pick up John in Fermeuse to bring him over to the house for a meal. John had an orchard in Fermeuse.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

130807: On February 22, 1922 he and his wife (misnamed Julia on the ship's manifest) and their adopted daughter Margaret O'Leary all travelled on board the SS SACHEM to New York. It is noted on their immigration form that they paid no head tax because they were "In transit". They indicated they intended to visit a Miss Fowler at the Commodore Hotel in newYork. This may have been a niece of Judith's as her sister Elizabeth married James Fowler. They intended to stay for 2 months.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

161208: Although the above Will provides some evidence as to the parentage of John by reference to his two nieces, the connection is nailed down by the fact that he was named as the brother of George Morry in Seattle in the latter's newspaper obituary (see notebook image in George Morry's page).

John MORRY & Mary Foale LUKE, by Licence. Both sign. Wits; Mary Morry Hy. White.

Note that both were literate. Mary Morry would not have been Mary Graham, wife of Matthew Morry, as she died the year previous. That means it was most likely his sister Mary and she would have still been a spinster at that time (no married name).

Aunt Jean's records incorrectly list date of birth and christening as1766 instead of 1776.

010803: Will of John Morry, Mariner of Dartmouth , Devon 15 June 1807 PROB 11/1463 downloaded from: http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/ (see Word transcript in scrapbook)

It would appear that either Mary died or became incompetent to handle her own affairs by 1809 at which time the court appointed Matthew Morry to manage the estate on behalf of the son, his grandson, John Morry, who was then a minor (10 years old) and incompetent to handle these financial affairs. This explains a great deal as I believe Matthew came to be like a second father to John as they are both buried in the same grave in Ferryland.

It is interesting that his christening took place at St. Petrox and not St. Saviour's where the majority of Morry events were recorded. St. Petrox was the church of the upper classes in Dartmouth and it would appear that Matthew may have been having some pretensions at entering that class at this time but later realised he was beyond his station and returned to St. Saviour's.

031215:
It was pointed out to me today by Gail McConnell of the Dartmouth History Research Group that there is evidence online of John having received his first (as far as is known) Letters of Marque from the Crown against France on November 12, 1805.

This information is found on the website http://www.1812privateers.org/ which is focussed on the War of 1812 but of course John was long since dead by then. However the people behind this website did take the time to transcribe the "Register of Letters of Marque against France 1793-1815" in case those same privateers were involved in the conflict with the US in 1812. Thus they show that in the Letters of Marque issued to British vessels in the conflict with France between 1793 and 1815 John Morry received his Letters of Marque on November 12, 1805 for the Schooner ALEXANDER, 100 tonnes, with a crew of 25 and ordinance of ten - 12 pound cannon on board. The information given does not say if he had previously been given Letters of Marque nor does it give any information on how long he continued to operate as a privateer, though Probate of his Will appears to indicate that he died in 1807.

Contradicting this evidence of his death is a newspaper article in the Ipswich Journal (Ipswich, England), Saturday, November 19, 1808; Issue 3934 found on a website that had digitised 19th century British Newspapers which states: "Sailed on Tuesday the Alexandria frigate with Mr. Morry and suite for Gottenburgh". This suggests that he was still alive as late as that date (the Tuesday prior to the 19th of November, 1808, that is November 15th, 1808). There is a possibility that John had died and been replaced as Master by one of his kin, who would therefore be the Mr. Morry in question. But I have found no evidence of another Morry in that period who had received Letters of Marque.

We also have no details on how he died, but we can presume it was in some action against the French. He was a young man and unlikely to have died of natural causes.

Between the date on which he was issued his Letters of Marque (1805) and the unknown date of his death (1807 or 1808), John managed to amass a small fortune (£1500) from his share of the proceeds of the sale of at least 8 Danish and Prussian prize ships which were trading with France.

I have never seen either of these people before, which is strange. I'm not sure how he fits with the other Morrys in Dartmouth at the time. Only this sole record of marriage is found in the Morey database. Perhaps they had no children. It is slightly possible that this was a prior marriage for the John Morry who married Mary Foale Luke the next year, but not probable.
