His death certificate was released by The Rooms according to Provincial policies and there it is said that he was married at the time of his death. I have no information on this marriage and will probably have to await further data releases to get that.

140813:

I cannot account for why there are two different but very close dates for both birth and Christening on the two transcripts of church regsiters on the NGB website and have no idea therefore which is more credible. I'm leaving the ones I had first as the "Preferred" for now until I have had an opportunity to check this out against primary sources.

080116:
I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.

Notes
General:
Name spelled Honoria and Honora in some records, the former includingthe church record of birth but this may be an error.

According to Enid O'Brien in an email dated 29/04/02: "Honorah (b. Jan 27, 1894, baptised 26 February 1894 on vital stats, vol 31 place of residence is given as Ferryland (although) on Petty Hrrec on computer it is given as Caplin Bay."

In an email from Bridget Smith on April 28, 2002: "Honorah is the name my grandmother (her sister) gave me as well as her daughter. We always called her Nora."

In an email from Bridget Smith on April 30, 2002: " Honora's daughter ... has spelt it as Honora. The way it was written appeared to have an "h" at the end but after looking at it again I see there is no "h". I will contact another of her children and see if I can confirm this. The BC Archives actually show Walter Leonard Woodhouse married Howard Morry so we could have a whole new concept here."

03/11/02: BC Census of 1901 has date of birth wrong by a year (it shows she andher sister born 3 months apart! Both she and her sister Jane's names are also misspelled in the records: Morry, Nora B: 27 Jan 1893, NFD 1901 CEN Location: Victoria City T-6430-11-21-37-227 daughter

17/12/02: BC Archives incorrectly identifies bride as Howard Morry.

From Dad Morry's diary for 1957:

Nov 8. A lovely morning. Arose at 6 am, to catch a car for St. John's
to attend Howard's wedding tomorrow. Had a nice time. Went to the Legion
at night and met some men off a British submarine.

Nov 9. Went to Outer Cove to Howard' s wedding. 'Twas a lovely ceremony.
Howard and Bill who was his best man, looked so nice and 'twas nice to
see them there together. The bride, Mary, looked lovely, dressed in
white and also her sister who was Bridesmaid was dressed in blue. There
were almost a hundred guests and the reception was held at the Crystal
Palace where we sat down to a nice Turkey Breakfast and lots of liquid
refreshments. And after the speeches, etc. and the guests got down to
dancing, we had a real nice time and I had quite a few dances which I paid
up for later (what odds you're only young once). Came back to Phyl's
and went to bed at eight o'clock.

Email from Uncle Howard on March 31, 2009: "RE THE LAST LOT OF PICTURES , WHILE LYING SLEEPLESS IN BED, I MULLED THINGS OVER IN MY MIND. HOWIE AND VI WERE MARRIED AHEAD OF ME BUT THEY ONLY HAD A BIT OF A HOUSE PARTY WITH NO RECEPTION AT A CLUB OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. WHEN MARY WAS SINGLE I WAS TOLD THAT SHE WAS CALLED THE PRIDE OF OUTER COVE ON ACCOUNT OF HER GOOD LOOKS.SHE HAD A FEW STEADIES BEFORE ME BUT WHEN I MET HER AT A DANCE SHE HAD NO BOY FRIEND AND WAS AVAILABLE FOR A DATE. WE WENT OUT TOGETHER FOR 3 AND A HALF YEARS BEFORE WE GOT MARRIED, I CAN SAFELY SAY THAT SHE NEVER CAUSED ANY HARD FEELINGS IN THE MORRY FAMILY AND THOSE WHO MET HER AND GOT TO KNOW HER HAD NOTHING BUT PRAISE FOR HER. THE PICTURE OF THE BABY ON THE BLANKET IN OUR FRONT YARD IS MORE THAN LIKELY ME ,BECAUSE I WAS JEANS PET AND SHE TOLD ME SO MANY TIMES WHEN I VISITED HER TWICE IN UTAH.FROM THE TIME I STARTED TO REMEMBER I WAS ALWAYS WITH HER . I REMEMBER HER BRINGING ME TO SCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND HAULING HAY HOME FOR DAD, ONE NIGHT ABOUT TEN O,CLOCK WE TURNED OVER A LOAD OF HAY COMING OUT FROM THE FARM, NEITHER OF US GOT HURT GOT THE LONG CART UP RIGHTED AND RE LOADED THE HAY. DAD WAS IN THE STAGE AT FISH, AND I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER THAT WE HAD THE BIGGEST KIND OF A RAIN STORM THAT NIGHT AFTERWARDS AND DAD WAS DELIGHTED AS THE HAY WAS IN THE BARN. ALSO THE HORSE IN THE PICTURE WAS LASSIE THE LAST ONE WE EVER HAD. WHEN DAD QUIT THE FARMING BIT HE GAVE OR SOLD HER TO VIC DEVEREAUX AS HE KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO A GOOD HOME, AND HE COULD SEE HER EVERYDAY AS VIC LIVED ACROSS THE ROAD FROM US.HE KEPT HER TILL SHE DIED OF OLD AGE WELL UP IN HER THIRTIES. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN SHE WAS BORN AND OUR HORSE KIT OWNED HER. SHE DIED AT 17 OR 18 YEARS OLD FROM A DISEASE CALLED BLACK WATER CAUSED BY TOO GOOD FOOD AND NOT WORKED ENOUGH. IT HAPPENED ON A SUNDAY AND DAD DIDN,T HAUL WOOD ON SUNDAYS.THAT BABY ON THE BLANKET IS NOT MERCER AS HE NEVER CHANGED IN LOOKS EVEN TO THIS DAY. JUST COMPARE THE ONE WITH HIM WITH THE SAILOR HAT ON AND THE ONE ON THE BLANKET, AS YOU WILL SEE THERE IS NO COMPARISON. ALSO [I STAND TO BE CORRECTED ]I THINK HE WAS BORN IN HUDSONS BAY WHEN PHYLLIS AND BERT WORKED FOR THE HUDSONS BAY COMPANY IN FACT A FEW YEARS AGO HE HIRED A PLANE FLEW TO HUDSONS BAY AND VISITED HIS GOD PARENTS. THE GOD FATHER WAS DAN BURSEY THE GOD MOTHER I DON,T KNOW IF I EVER HEARD HER NAME.KEEP SENDING THE PICTURESAS I ENJOY THEM JUST AS MUCH AS YOU. I GOT TO FIND OUT THE OWNERS AT THAT TIME OF THE 2 BIG HOUSES UP ON SUNNY HILL ONE OF THEM IS FARRELS AND THE OTHER I GOT TO FIND OUT. WHO EVER THEY ARE MUST HAVE HAD MONEY TO BUILD MANSIONS LIKE THAT IN THOSE HARD TIMES.IF I ONLY HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER I WOULD HAVE WRITTEN DOWN ALL THIS HISTORY THAT DAD TOLD ME, BUT AS YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE A TEENAGER YOUR MIND WAS THEN ON THE FINER THINGS OF LIFE [CHASING GOOD LOOKING GIRLS]AND THERE WAS LOTS OF THEM ON THE GO THEN.DID YOU KNOW THAT I COURTED SHANNY DUFF FOR A LONG WHILE [BEFORE MARY]SHE THOUGHT I WAS THE NEXT BEST THING SINCE ICE CREAM ,IF YOU EVER MEET HER ASK HER AND SHE WILL TELL YOU.HER PARENTS WERE BOTH DRS BUT THEY LIKED ME A WHOLE LOT. I WENT AWAY TO WORK AND WE LOST CONTACT AND WHEN I CAME BACK AFTER A FEW YEARS SHE WAS A NURSE BY THEN AND HAD A STEADY[DR DUFF] AND I DIDN,T WANT TO INTERFERE. SHE TOLD ME AFTER ONE TIME AT A CHANCE MEETING IN OTTAWA THAT I SHOULD HAVE. SOME BODY TOLD ME SHE HAS A HALL OF FAME PICTURE OF ME HUNG IN HER OFFICE AT CITY HALL. IN THE MEANTIME I THINK SHE MADE A BETTER CHOICE WELL IT IS NOW 3 AM AND I MUST GO TO ROOST REGARDS HOWARD"

• Census: Howard Morry and family (2 pages), 1935, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. In this census he reports his occupation as Storekeeper - Grocery; there is no mention of his involvement in the fishery, as if that were a lower occupation. His declared his home had 12 rooms and was valued at $2000, much higher than his neighbours who were fishermen. But his income was $300, not much more than those involved in the fishery full time. Note that Dr. Joseph Louis Giovanneti is staying with them as a lodger.

This is the official sale of John Morry's old house and lands at the junction of the Barkhouse Meadow Rd. (back lane) and the Main Highway (Hwy 10). He was required to give this up for sale by the executor of the will of his father, Thomas Graham Morry III, in return for receiving the house and lands of the latter left conditionally in his Will.

• Interesting: Gave speech at Coronation Day celebrations - Evening Telegram notice, 26 May 1937, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Note that the census taker made numerous mistakes. He had them all as of Irish extraction, including Mom Morry, even though he had her place of birth as Scotland! He had Dad Morry listed as "housewife" where his occupation should be instead of Mom Morry. But the information on him is found in the line above and shows him as a cod fisherman earning $600/yr. He also had her listed as an RC. Then on the next page he has Uncle Bill and Uncle Reg listed as being of English extraction even though they are in the same family as the others.
.

• Occupation: Store Keeper, 1945, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Interesting: Stories told by Laura (Agnes) Morry, After 1945, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. She says that he and Charlie Freebairn used to come to their house and sing the old songs that soldiers like them sang in WWI. She mentions "I belong to Glasgow" but I think that was more likely one of Mom Morry's favourite songs. She also says that he claimed to have a spyglass that could look beyond the islands to Scotland. I suspect this was after Mom Morry died in 1948 when he was feeling lonely and nostalgic. She also said he smoked cigars, which I never knew before.

• Property: Permission to occupy land where St. Luke's Anglican Church once stood, 1 May 1948, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Interesting: Donation of parts of Benger gravestone to Provincial Museum, 5 Oct 1961, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Mr. Howard Morry, Ferryland, has recently presented
to the Museum three large fragments of the headstone of
Robert Benger of Ferryland.
Neither the date of his birth
nor of his death appears on
any of the fragments, but he
was a member of the old Benger family of Ferryland. Two
of his forebears, Robert and
John Benger were among the
signatories of a petition sent
in the year 1709 to Joesph Dudley, Governor and Captain General in and over His Majesty's
Colonies of New England and
New * Hampshire, by residents
of the Isle au Bois, Ferryland
requesting that they be allowed to remain on the island.
Subsequently one of the Benger family is believed to have
lived in Lord Baltimore's house
at Ferryland. Later members
of the Benger family carried
on business in Ferryland for
many years. The Curator of
the Newfoundland Museum is
most grateful \\o Mr. Morry for
having recovered the parts of
the headstone, and for having
presented them to the -Museum.

280216:

The Minty family were not Church of Scotland, though their marriage license suggests they were members of St. Michael's Church of Scotland. It just happens that this is the Parish in which the wedding took place and thus for registration purposes only, they were married in St. Michael's Parish, but not in the church. In fact the family was United Free Church of Scotland, a much less conservative body. The church they attended, now long since torn down, was on Dalry Rd. a mile or more from their house on Ardmillan Terrace. Because Dad Morry was AWOL on the day of the marriage and for the honeymoon, they could not risk going to the church to be wed. So they were married just three doors down the street at 1 Ardmillan Terrace, which was then the Labour Hall. This is confirmed from both their wedding invitation and the official marriage certificate.

210512: This is a transcript of Dad Morry's gravestone as found on FindAGrave:

Inscription: Sacred to the memory of Pte. No. 726 Howard L. Morry, Royal Nfld. Regiment, born July 24, 1885, died Feb. 8, 1972 A gallant soldier rests here, his battle over, his peace won

250615:
Dad Morry was interviewed among many other survivors of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment for an episode of the CBC's documentary, "In Flanders Fields" in 1964. Only two of the comments he made have been preserved in the text of the video that was broadcast but the full text and possibly the sound recording of his interview still exists as Brian McKenna had a copy of it when I went with him to Beaumont Hamel this year in May. Unfortunately I did not get a copy from him at that time and he does not respond to my emails.

Here are the two comments that wound up on air. I also have sound clips of these that were used last year in the much briefer CBC production, "The Bugle and the Passing Bell".

It was a lovely morning and pretty quiet, but the very minute they got over the top, the very minute they started, well you wouldn't know what had happened. You couldn't see anything, only dust and smoke and shell bursting, and bits of rag and sticks and everything going up in the air. You couldn't see a thing, not a thing.

Charlie Parsons and I we went out after night picking up the wounded and dead, you see. In the day you could hear fellows calling out for help out of the shell holes but once night fell they weren't calling out any more. An occasional fellow was off his head. You'd hear him moan, but most of the fellows kept very quiet, afraid the Germans would come over and shoot them, you see, and you had to crawl down the shell holes and feel around, feel whether a fellow was dead or living.

111015:

In his book, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment in the Great War, Frank Gogos quotes Dad Morry's memoirs on a number of occasions and also mentions many of the same men Dad Morry knew and who show up in his memoirs. On page 270 of this book, Frank also describes the conditions in the billets at Ypres where Dad Morry spent his final days and nights of terror whilst dilerious with fever before being evacuated to England and then home:

"..."C" Company took up positions in the cellar of an old school east of Ieper and "D" Company too position in what was known as the Hornwerke on the opposite bank of the canal across from the south rampart at Menin Gate. The first recorded casualties came on August 4 when five men from "C" Company were shelled while in the cellars of the school. Four days later, the entire area of Ieper was covered in a large cloud of gas released by the Germans...It was here in September that the Regiment was fitted, tested, and issued the box respirator gas mask for the first time, replacing Cluny MacPherson's modified hood gas mask."

These events are described in harrowing personal detail by Dad Morry in his memoirs.

161015:
In the MUN Digital Archives Initiative there is a Royal Newfoundland Scrapbook (compiled by person unknown) which contains an obituary from a newspaper column in the Evening Telegram by Herb Wells (Vets' Corner) for Dad Morry. This is how it reads:

"Through the co-operation of Comrade Edgar Pike, secretary of Ferryland branch of the Royal Canadian Legion we are able to give you the details on the passing of Comrade Howard Morry of Ferryland who passed away Feb. 8. He served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War, C Company. He was wounded on two occasions and was a survivor of the epic attack by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont-Hamel July 1, 1916. On the 50th anniversary of that Battle, Comrade Morry was honored to be able to attend the anniversary at Beaumont-Hamel and to go over the grounds which he and his comrades fought so valiantly on during that engagement. Comrade Morry often told me that one of the most memorable moments in his life was when he read all the names on the grave markers of his friends who died on that tragic day. Comrade Morry was a life-long member of the old G.W.V.A. and its successor, Ferryland branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Members of Ferryland branch and nearby Branches attended the funeral in a body. The Guard of Honor was made up of members of Ferryland branch. Funeral mass was celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church at Ferryland by Rev. Father Corrigan who also said the prayers at the graveside. The Legion Ritual was recited at the graveside by Comrade Stan Brazil, past president of Ferryland branch. Comrade Morry's son, Bill, is president of Ferryland branch and also a member of Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, while his wife Pat is also a veteran and is treasurer of the branch." This is followed with a few words of poetry:

"0 Valiant hearts, who to your glory came
Through dust of conflict and through battle flame;
Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved,
Your memory hallowed in the land you loved."

also this article:

"Old soldiers: How true is the saying "old soldiers never die" and this could be applied to Howard Morry of Ferryland, who passed away recently, for he will always be alive in memory in his community and among his friends all over our Province, for he truly exemplified all that was noble and good whilst serving in the first world war and after in his business and family life. Comrade Morry had reached the wonderful age of 88 and was active practically right up to the last. He was a member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment "C" Company, wounded on two occasions and a survivor of the July Drive. When the Newfoundland Government honoured the survivors of the July Drive in 1966, Comrade Morry was one of the Veterans chosen to represent Newfoundland at the Ceremonies in Beaumont Hamel. He was one of the original members of the Great War Veterans Association, a life member of Ferryland Branch No. 34 (of which Branch his son Bill is President and his daughter-in-law Pat is Treasurer). A Guard of Honor was present from Branch No. 34, with Comrade Stan Brazil reading the Legion Ritual, Officiating Priest Rev. Father Corrigan. The high esteem in which Comrade Morry was held in evidence in the large turnout of Veterans and friends from all over the Province. To the grieving family we offer our sincerest sympathy and if it is any consolation to them, may we say our lives were enriched by being privileged to know him."

Note that Dad Morry was never wounded but was twice invalided out to hospital for illnesses (Trench Fever, Rheumatic Fever) before finally being sent home as no longer fit for service. Also the anniversary on which he visited Beaumont Hamel was the 45th, not the 50th.

220816:
According to Richard Cramm in "The First Five Hundred", Captain Herbert Rendell and Lieutenant Cecil B. Clift and 30 men were the last Newfoundlanders to leave Suvla. There is no mention of the names of the enlisted men or the fact that Dad Morry was one of them. Similarly, he says that Capt. Rendell and Capt. Joe Nunns along with four men of the RNR were the last to leave Cape Helles and again Dad Morry is not mentioned.

190916:
Peter Cashin, in his memoirs, "My Fight for Canada", expressed surprise and disappointment that "Howard Morey [sic]", who had been a Cashin supporter voting for Sir Michael, his father, as did Howard's father, "Thomas Graham Morey [sic]", would no longer support him in the 1928 election and afterwards. He attributed it to an explanation. He said that, at Dad Morry's request, he had sent down a bull to Ferryland to inseminate the livestock in the area but that the bull proved to unruly to perform and had to be destroyed. This "cock and bull" story seems highly unlikely to be the cause, which was more likely emnity carried over from Cashin's role as an officer in WWI or the belief by some people on the shore that Cashin was not the man his father was and was not worthy of their vote.

Edward Roberts, who edited the memoirs, also misspelled Dad Morry's name in the brief entry in his appendix identifying people mentioned by Cashin. He says:

Morey [sic], Howard (1885-1972)
A member of a well-known family that operated a fishery supply and export
business in Ferryland. He was son of Thomas Morey [sic]. PJC describes
Thomas Morey [sic] as "a real old gentleman ... [and] certainly a noble character.
He was a great personal friend of my father" (My Life and Times, 175).
Active in the 1928 election campaign.

010317:
A transcript of Dad Morry's obituary as it appeared in the Evening Telegram and was originally copied for Aunt Elsie by Aunt Jean:
MORRY Passed peacefully away at Ferryland in his 88th year, Howard L. Morry, leaving to mourn four sons and four daughters, Phyllis at St. John's, Bill at Ferryland, Tom at Ottawa, Reg at Belleville, Ont., Jean at Utah, Elsie at Sudbury, Ont., Catherine at Los Angeles, U.S.A., and Howard at Kilbride; also one sister Trix at Dartmouth, N.S.; 28 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. Remains resting at Carnell's Funeral Home. Burial to take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, January 10th, at the R.C. Parish, Ferryland. Howard Morry served in the Royal Nfld. Regiment during World War I and was a survivor of the July Drive.

130717:
The Legion's book, "Lest We Forget, Vol. 16" had this to say about him: "MORRY, Howard L., Pte 726 Served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment December 17th, 1914 - January 26th, 1917. Born in Ferryland, Newfoundland on
July 24th, 1885. In the 1950's, Howard wrote his memories of the Great War which have been of great historical interest. Deceased: February 8th, 1972. Buried: Ferryland RC Cemetery."

190318:
The 1945 Census form completed by Fred Johnston showed the first three members of the family, including Dad Morry, Mom Morry, and Howard Jr. to be of Irish ancestry. He was too lazy to enquire and simply carried this information down from the Devereaux family above. He also showed all three as RC although Mom Morry was Reformed Church of Scotland. Bill and Reg appeared at the top of the next page and he correctly identified them there as being of English origin, though English-Scottish would have been more precise.

Found on the Digital Archives Initiative (MUN):

In the Atlantic Guardian, vol. 14, no. 04 (April 1957)

The following letter from Howard Morry of Ferryland refers to
M. F. Harrington's story of a shipwreck-"Heather in the Ice" -
published in our March/ 1957, issue:
"I was much interested in the story of the loss of the
Heather. Wm. Morry and Henry Morry were my father's
uncles. There was one name omitted from the crew of the
rescuers-Wm. Morry. The lady who saw the men on the ice
was Mrs. Wm. Carter, mother of Mrs. Alderdice. The man
Marmaduke Clow, I think, was an Englishman. He was a
Church of England man, I know. He married a Miss
Johnston of Ferryland. Her father was Blacksmith there. I
think their name was formerly spelled Clough and was
corrupted to Clow and now Clowe. There are several families
of relations of his here now by that name."

NOTE FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

One of several lengthy gaps in Dad Morry's diaries occurs between August 17, 1951 to June 1, 1952. I believe that this represents a missing diary. But it also may cover his first major trip to visit his children who are by this time living on the mainland and in California. There may be evidence of this in other letters etc. 1529
